It's official, the world is coming to an end:

ECS may be the last vendor claiming to have any, however they don't have them in stock, meaning orders placed are likely to be cancelled (which is exactly what happened in July 2022 with PelicanParts, BMA Parts on Amazon, eEuroparts, various eBay sellers including the in-famous PartsContainer, and others). See update below.

UPDATE FROM ECS: "We do not stock this item we would have to order it from Mercedes. If Mercedes has discontinued it we would not be able to get them."

UPDATE, Aug-16-2022: A couple dozen toobz appeared in stock in early August (see post #62) but now they are sold out / OOS everywhere again.
UPDATE, Aug-18-2022: Eight more have appeared in stock...

UPDATE, Sept-6-2022: OOS / backordered at most vendors. AHAZ claimed "low stock" and then "Temporarily Unavailable" by 9/13.
UPDATE, Oct-31-2022: OOS / backordered at most vendors. AHAZ claims "low stock" with unknown quantities available.
UPDATE, Dec-31-2022: OOS / backordered at *all* vendors. AHAZ briefly claimed "Available to order", meaning SOLD OUT, lol.

NOTE: As an alternative, the W126/M117 passenger side plastic tube 117-094-03-82 is functionally equivalent, but looks different. These are still available everywhere as of Jan-2023, ~$15 aftermarket, or ~$11 from discount dealers. Order 2 of 'em. Photo of these on a 500E are at this link.

I replaced my Zoom Tubes some years ago when I lived in Texas, but carefully saved my originals, which were still in quite good condition. A Jimbo-style tube-stash of a few pairs probably isn't a bad idea, though..... for the days when $5K a pair comes, as with the headlights.

I am just glad that the bulk of my 500E's restoration and the required parts were purchased in the 2015 - 2016 period when most of the 036 specific parts were still available from MB dealers. Aka I got one of the last sets of left traffic headlamps, upper and lower wiring harnesses, new radiator cowlings, boot carpet, fender liners, undertrays and intake tubes etc etc.

I have hundreds of photos of my 500E restoration - attached are some of those parts I got at that time.

All of the plastics that typically fade, crack & get lost through a car's life I bought new. It was an expensive journey even then - I shudder to think what it would cost nowadays with the amount of NLA items and crazy pricing for 036 parts. Needless to say I would be very reluctant to take on another 500E restoration!

Gnash teeth and rend garments time?

I shared the nomenclature with my dealer parts guys for these, as I had to order a set for the new W211/2003 E320 because the originals pretty much came apart in my hands when I removed them. I am now accused of poisoning their brains as they now apparently use the term across the board for all inlet air tubes.

Should I advise them the term is trademarked and they'll need to pay royalties? :lolzz:

I first encountered the term “Zoom Tube” in 1986. It was what one of my fraternity brothers marked on his beer bong in black permanent marker, consisting of a Large diameter clear plastic hose attached to a large plastic funnel that could hold the equivalent of 5-6 cans of beer.

It was a cruelly efficient device.

Started using the term here many years ago to denote the intake tubes.

This is getting really depressing, I think that I'm at the last possible opportunity to fully respray my 400E. Now I'm just waiting for most of the body clips to become NLA.

I bought last left fender in Europe 2 years ago for around 250$. Now prices on ebay for new OEM fender are around 800$!!!. We are coming to E500E prices territory with parts for pesant 124.

This fender if everything goes this way, in 25years will fund my retirement along with upper fan shround that i bought only for rubber flaps. :brudda:

Yes this will start to happen soon if it hasn't already.

Years ago I began to collect good used original w124 w140 trim clips when I could find them but also finding reproductions on ebay.

Some of the little clips like the ones that hold the chrome to door sacco panels can off huge savings going on ebay VS MB dealer.

This way I always have clips on hand when I need em and I will also not run out any time soon. I have 2 cases like this and keep adding to them / expanding the range as years go by.

Mercedes have really screwed up by producing such a broad range of vehicles. I suspect that they (right now) are sacrificing the classic inventory to so that they can carry inventory for newer models which is a much bigger product catalog. Anyone owning a newer Mercedes had better be buying it as a lease because they're going to be totally screwed as their cars get older.

Apparently they're coming to their senses now. I read somewhere that a memo went out to dealers to let them know that the new CLE will replace the C , E and S class coupe / convertible lineup because there's just not a big enough demand for 3 coupe models. Who would have guessed?

The "entry models" will be consolidated as well. M-B was trying to compete in categories they don't belong in and "Trying to sell an A-class to a golf driver who can now only afford a skoda" has thinned out the resources.

Now they concluded the obvious and want to focus on the high-end core models...too late IMO, after decades of devaluing the high end models and selling an A-class to a C-class owners and an E-class to an S-class owner... how do you regain the value and demand in the market?

Yes, Mercedes is in the early stages of pruning and consolidating its many product lines, and is attempting under its current CEO to go upmarket and move away from lower-end cars like the A and B models, as well as consolidating other models across its ranges.

I would also expect not to see AMG models of everything in the product line, as well. Hopefully they will also stop making "faux" AMG models of cars, and only reserve the AMG badge for cars with true hand-built AMG engines. One can wish.....

I suppose the good folk at Affalterbach will be re-trained on how to hand wind electric motors.

I wonder if the sale of the Uhlenhaut coupe was a signal that heritage and support of older models is not a priority for the new “management”? It does seem like a good opportunity for high quality aftermarket parts suppliers. The pick and pull yards are probably pretty thin at this point.

Since the Uhlenhaut Coupe is mentioned, here's an interesting article about it:

As for MB and its support of older models -- it has seen a steady erosion of support over the past 25 years, particularly as stocks of parts have been drawn down and more and more has gone NLA. MB has also continually blown out (sold) over-stocked parts to various vendors and third-party firms over the years, particularly items like body panels (doors, fenders, and such).

MB Classic does I think what it can in terms of having important NLA parts (re)commissioned and new product runs done, but they only have so much time, resources and funds to do this. And for them, the older classics such as the Gullwing, Pagodas and other "collectible" models are more important, and lucrative $$$ wise in terms of ROI on these efforts to have parts reproduced.

It has been interesting to see the aftermarket step up, at least to some degree, to have some NLA parts 3D-printed and otherwise reproduced, and I expect to see this trend continue. The aftermarket firms like Kurth Classics will help fill the gaps where MB can't (or won't) get parts reproduced -- particularly smaller and plastic trim pieces and small-volume parts.

Over the past few years, the pick and pull yards have very definitely gotten thinner in terms of the 1980s and 1990s cars. It has REALLY gotten bad over the past two years. I used to go to the yards a couple of times a month, when interesting stuff would come in. Now, I'm lucky to go every two months, because the bulk of the MBs coming in are from the 2000-2012 model years.

So, while older cars still do filter in, and will continue to, it will be much much rarer. It makes me glad that I spent the last 15 years getting all of the parts that I did. I will continue to sell parts off, particularly stuff that it is apparent that I will never use, but grabbed anyway just because seeing good factory parts go to the crusher....was such a crushing feeling.

There will never be a substitute for original, factory parts in good condition ... even used original factory parts pulled from wrecked cars.

I expect, now that MB's attention is thoroughly focused on electric cars for the future, that their interest and attention to the "classic" models will continue to slowly wane. They will always be focused on best supporting the most lucrative/famous classic models, and other cars will continue to wither on the vine.

That said, heritage is very important to MB, and they will always maintain a Classic division and factory workshops and parts to maintain their own collection of cars, as well as those of moneyed collectors of the famous vintage models. However, I believe that MB Classic has trended toward more of a vanity operation at this point -- maintaining the illusion of supporting its cars as a marketing message to support the brand, and because its fleet of classic cars is important to the brand heritage and image (hence why you see MB shipping cars from its collection to worldwide events such as Pebble Beach, Amelia Island, Essen Motor Show, Techno-Classica, Classic Days, etc.).

Despite the reduction and potential loss of support on older (continuous support only lucrative models only transporting important dna or milestones - but even this has become questionable with the sale of the red uhlenhaut coupe) MB will bring a new line above Maybach - the so called Mythos line. With bespoke, small production run vehicles for extra premium. Also one offs are planed above that. How successful it will be and how much maskerade/hop up of a regular base product it will be is to be seen yet.

It distresses me to see the declining parts support for our favorite chassis - w126’s and w124’s. I sold my pristine E500 years ago and sadly probably won’t own another due to many parts are now NLA to bring a car to my desired level or a pristine low mileage example is out of my reach.

I am in the middle of restoring my widebody SEC and have been accumulating parts over the past 5 years for this restoration. It would be impossible for me to replicate my accumulated parts today - too many are now NLA and I fear aftermarket quality just isn’t there to justify the effort. I will probably have to sell the WB after I finish it mainly because of the idiots creating the stock market swoon and my impending retirement.

Junk yard cars yield fasteners and some mechanical parts, but I only see 2-3 cars/year that I pick.

Getting back to the original topic, I received my order of new Zoom Toobs today for the M119. This, via AutohauZ.

These are ACTUAL Mercedes-Benz parts, with part numbers and lettering on them. Not OEM parts - ACTUAL MB parts. Nothing filed off.

Since these are NLA from MB, I HIGHLY recommend that long-term get them now from sources like AutohauZ to have a pair for reserve. They are not going to last forever.

I have gotten a lot more than just fasteners and some mechanical parts from cars in the yards. I have gotten door cards and internal trim, under-dash panels, seatbelt presenters, all window regulators, instrument clusters, speaker grills, sun visors, sunroof controls, switches, interior wood panels, ACC controls, all relays and electronics, and plenty of other stuff for 126s that is either prohibitively expensive, or just not available anywhere anymore.

Pelican, FCP and ECS claim to have some, but I'd call and ask a live person before ordering if you don't want the order cancelled. Might still be a few on their shelves, as their price is nearly double what RME/AHAZ was charging.

These went faster than I thought. Yikes.

Thanks for the hint Dave. Still in Germany so didn’t call Pelican parts but instead just ordered them online. I’ll see if they actually ship or if they also cancel 🤷🏼‍♂️

Interested to see if some of these third-party firms actually DO have these toobs in stock. I bet that AutohauZ had a very fast run on their remaining stock due to members of this forum !!

Just bought a spare set from eBay. I think it was quite pricey but all will be what comes to these cars+shipping to Europe+imports etc.

Congrats @jnes!

No question there will be a fair bit of NOS supply of these tubes out there, and I am sure that various dealers probably have some lying around as well.

It irks me when these third-party parts houses say they have them in stock, take the order, and then cancel it.

In any case, the tubes are a good item for all long-term owners to be on the lookout for, and to grab if/when they come available.

I bought a set off Amazon as a test (less than $60 each). They came from a Benz dealer, and shipped today, so they're out there sitting on shelves. I replaced mine early on in my ownership so I don't really "need" these I suppose. The last time I looked at the intake runners and found them unsightly, they got replaced, simple as that. So if someone out there gets stuck and really needs a set, PM me.

Cheers,

maw

EDIT... mine that showed up were original. I didn't spend a lot of time examining them though.
