FOR SALE 1992 500E, Pearl Black/Black, 128kmi, $50k (Kirkland, WA)

Please, whomever sees the car, take photos of the front end, including of the engine compartment inside, and especially the upper radiator support. Also the spoiler area and bottom of the radiator area. Also it would be good to ask if there are any photos (either at the Lamborghini dealer or from the consignor) as to the extent of the damage that was from January of this year.

Interesting that there are zero photos of the car under the hood, or from underneath the car. It's at the point mileage and age-wise that it is going to start needing some stuff.

It's kind of unfortunate. Guy buys car, guy crashes car less than two weeks later, guy decides to sell car.
So that means the current seller bought it for $37.5k a year ago, crashes it and then is trying to sell said crashed car for $12.5k more than he bought it for a year earlier?

One can only hope that the seller has a nice fat stack of heavy maintenance receipts to justify that particular logic

That's a nice period correct ultra fancy head unit! (even though this means the original Becker 1432 wiring is gone....)
Not necessarily... I told my guys to make mine fully reversible when they did mine. Of course, I haven't checked it, but I'm sure it "cost extra" to do it that way. But I didn't take it to some random stereo shop. I had the guys who'd been taking care of the car for 15 years do it for this very reason -- they knew the wiring better than anyone else, and they knew why I'd want it fully reversible. They gave me all the old components back too, again for this reason.

But, generally your conclusion is exactly what it means, for better or worse.

maw

EDIT... the other reason I had them do it was to subtlety reinforce that they'd be stuck dealing with any bad results.

my installer did the same, took a while to find someone as i just dont trust anyone. all wiring intact just incase i need back to oem but i have rainbows and a semi looking period correct nakamichi - i dont think anyone would want it back to oem if i ever decided to let the car go

Similar... I've since given away the components. If anyone wants them they can call Becker Autosound in NJ. But audiophiles and purists alike have all praised the system, and I consider myself both actually. Outside of this Board, I've never known anyone to want to keep the factory systems in these W124 cars, and that goes back over 35 years to the 80's when they were new. "Nice cars... those stereo systems are trash though" was the sentiment back then. Maybe that was just us Boyz n the Hood:whistling2:

maw

EDIT... recall that the 126 Coupe was like a $90k car back in '88... for that money, people expected a different level of stereo system... I think it was BMW that had Blaupunkt and Volvo too even had nicer systems... the Cadillac systems were Bose back then (IIRC), and they made these look like jokes... Pontiac systems were better... Pontiac!!

I'm familiar w/ the Becker head unit as my dad had a 300E back in the late 80s, those buttons sucked back then too. i played a track from NWA and my father was not amused. interesting enough, a few years ago, he called me and said did you hear about dr. dre being the first billionaire hip hop artist

What is the HU in this car? Can't discern a model number.
@duuder do you have a Nak CD45z or a CD400? I played w the former in a friends car over the weekend and while it's maaaaybe too new to truly blend it's quite close to period correct, the knob feel was great, and their reputation is solid although supposedly the FM reception isn't awesome.

I have the CD500, it's got a nice click in the know and the the radio works well

No rush or pressure, but thanks @TimL !
Ideally no rust, and mostly maintained and not abused or neglected.
Historically I'm a garage queen in appearance and soul of a work horse kind of guy 😂
I want to drive the shit out of my cars and not worry about them going wrong at any point

@Teddy_West, what are your criteria for the new 036 - colors, location, yadda x3?

:apl:

@gsxr - I think I have stronger feelings about the following;
1. No rust (big reason I offloaded the last one - it was a [neglected] Hawai'i import)
2. No cream/ beige interior (unless its in an exceptionally great condition - I'm just not a fan of how the color wears over time)
3. No rats nest of a stereo install (or electrical issues in general)
4. No missing pieces, inside or out. Some times (in my experience) sourcing dumb stuff is more annoying than finding NLA parts. An example here was replacing the tabs on the passenger side sun shade holder because it was broken some how. Easy to find, but annoying -

Short version, I'd like to get a car from someone who also cared about their ownership.

I am less firm on exterior colors, I can always get it wrapped.
I'm in California - so that makes smog and import concerns come to the top of the discussion.
I think I'd prefer a '92 (the power bump is nice) or a '94 (less concern with the yellowing/degrading two-piece headlights, and the updated LCAs for the SA brake swap), but I probably wouldn't shy away from a nice '93 or E5E in general.
Mileage doesn't bother me at all as long as the car has been maintained. I'd take a 200kmi car thats been loved over something with 20kmi and neglected (or abused).

I don't think I mind a face-lifted car either. Again, as long as its been loved.

LOL I feel selfish posting this all on this thread, taking it over - but let me know if I can give any more detail for my wants?
I'm definitely not a knowledge house compared to you or some of these other members - so I'm sure to ask dumb questions at some point. And I'm sure there are details that I am just not aware of. But bottom line, I had one, I loved it, and if I had gotten one with better bones, or had found this forum first I'd probably have found a different one and kept it.
I kind of came into the community on accident. I have always loved the 124, but I was originally looking for a C124 all those years ago, then down the rabbit hole looking up E5Es and ended up getting the HI car for something that was comfortably in my budget :)

@Teddy_West, I've seen a couple of cars currently for sale in Europe that match your wish list, but that will create a registration nightmare. Maybe you want to consider looking at this one, despite the dealer markup and the bullshit dealer spiel about new car smell, this thing supposedly has $65k in maintenance and repair receipts (no affiliation)

Yeah, maybe I'll offer them their last sale price and see what happens.
I'd rather get this car at ~$35k 😂

@Teddy_West and gang, I looked at this car just now. It needs the full madera wood refurb, the headlight buckets are yellowed out from age, the rear is significantly lower than in the pictures that kota had posted in his for sale thread a year or two ago (makes me wonder who modified it with what to get it so low, potentially pointing to some real bump stop riding here), faded multi-function wiper stalk, faded cruise control stalk, faded grille insert, nasty headlight switch, front passenger side fender has a dent that is starting to rust, the anodized black trim is all gold and faded, the front of the engine is a bit more oily than I’d like to see it and the interior air outlet on the driver side is damaged.

There was no additional info on service record or the accident, but the front bumper looked well aligned and all the stickers were present and accounted for.

The seats were in really good condition and well above average.

Nice car, not sure if its $50k nice, especially knowing that this was for sale recently for $37k, so you’d have to live with the fact that someone somewhere along the line did the good old flip with your money. If transmission is indeed refurbished and the suspension isn’t shot, this might be worth someone’s time.

If you need a PPI, go to Schmitt Automotive in Renton. They have plenty of 036 experience.

I didn't know the buckets could yellow. Before I buy new ones I figured I should ask: can they be restored like other glass headlights? I know the doors are plastic but I've replaced those already. Thoughts?

Buy new ones from whom? 😄 Unfortunately they are NLA. Previous owner replaced the doors which look ok, but the buckets looked really bad. Maybe there is a way to bring them back to their former glory/ged rid of the yellowing…..

I have a pair in my FCP Euro basket but hadn’t pulled the trigger because I have a detail guy who does great headlight refinishing. I’m back and forth between new vs having Hassan redo these (and the fogs while he’s at it). Maybe that order doesn‘t go through, but if they’re glass, maybe I don’t care. Mine are not in bad shape as they sit. This was before I installed the new doors (which I kept the old ones, of course).

maw

EDIT… Damn @TimL good call… it was ECSTuning not FCPEuro, and when I tried to buy them just now “Product is Unavailable” message popped up… I guess I didn’t need them.

EDIT2… OK guys, special thanks to @TimL for scaring the sinner out of me, I had to go back and check to see where I bought these headlight doors before they went NLA... not the ones pictured but the ones that replaced them. I bought them from MB Scottsdale (thanks @gsxr) in Aug’22, both left and right. Today, they say you can buy the L but the R is a discontinued item.

So if you need doors you may be out of luck (or PM me if you want my old ones and can be patient). I still think the glass buckets can be refinished or renewed or whatever they want to call it.

$65k in receipts?! Wow (if true). $60k ask is a lot for that one... shoot, I'd probably let my silver 94 go for that much, lol...

The rear can sag if parked for many months. Need to fire it up and drive it, and see if the rear lifts back up where it belongs, or not.

The USA headlights semi-sealed-beam are identical to all other USA 124's, so if these are fading or corroded internally, you can find good replacement from any other pre-facelift USA 124. These cannot be repaired or refurbished, since they cannot be taken apart. Fortunately this car has what appears to be new, 036-correct plastic "doors" which are now NLA as mentioned above.

Soo next (silly) question(s) - is the 'door' the outer portion, and the bucket the inner one?
And only the inner part is 036 specific, or the outer?

Thats so wild, I would have assumed it was the other way around - since the headlights are directional and E5E specific? (Also correct me here if I'm wrong)
I still haven't nailed the E5E headlight tell vs other 124s yet so I usually scan these comments hoping someone else has pointed it out LOL

Teddy, there are some threads discussing the differences between standard and 036 lights, with pictures & stuff... that may help.
