E420 vs 500E exhaust note

Hi All,

I recently watched this youtube video (Cammisa Ultimate Drag Race) that benchmarks the 500E against some of its contemporaries. Fun video in general IMO.

But listening to the audio it made me curious about the exhaust note of the 500e. In the video, the 500e has a sonorous V8 growl even off the throttle. Does the car in the video have an aftermarket exhaust? Is there some funky editing going on? I have an E420 and it compared to the 500e in the video it basically sounds silent... is the video accurate?

This is my 500E all stock inc original cats etc but with a Fox cat back system

500E in the video appears to have stock rear muffler tips? I'm curious what the rest of the exhaust is. Could be aftermarket cats and a Y-pipe which would change the sound significantly. Stock is SUPER quiet.

Wasn't the car in this video from a forum member? I forget who it is though...

Forgot to answer your earlier question... both E500E and 400E420 with stock exhausts are nearly silent. Too quiet, IMO. Adding a Y-pipe and aftermarket rear muffler behind stock catalysts adds a little rumble, but still pretty quiet... the factory cats reduce a lot of the exhaust noise.

While the factory cats keep the exhaust note on the quiet side, getting rid of the resonator and adding free flowing muffler(s) does make a noticeable difference. But nothing beats lower cell count cats, along with getting rid of the resonator and adding free flowing muffler(s). No money in the world would convince me to going back to the factory exhaust.

Hey! That is indeed my car and exhaust. It's the Fleiben system, cat back only, from @5thscaleracer I bough a number of years back and LOVE. It's maaaaybe a touch louder than I'd like on the highway but not really, and certainly any music or conversation drowns it out (and it's not drone-y or anything). I also love that the tips are exactly stock.

Nope, it is not true. It is an urban legend

The communities define a noise curfew which is typically from 10:00pm till 6:00am during these times you are not allowed excessive noise. The Landlord can define tighter rules, but banning to flush the toilet has no legal stance. It may however say that no washing machines are allowed to run, etc. What is very true however is that if you have a shared washroom, and you by accident drop a sock, the next person will not be able to use the washroom and will complain to the landlord.....

A friend of friend of mine from university (Which was during the mid 90s) was told by his landlord that he is making too much noise and that if he had less girls visit, that he would need to shower less at night.....
