Yep, will not fit without spacers, not with the 9.5" width of the wheels and the high offset. Maybe a 15mm-20mm spacer might help.

And if they are from an S-class, you'll also need special bolts with M12 thread and M14 ball seat.

:watchdrama:

Darn,

I found a really good deal, $700 for a fairly clean set, I knew it was too good to be true.
Has anyone put these on their 500e with spacers? Is it dangerous to do so?
On the topic of bolts and threads. Is there any other MB model that has the same seat and threads for a stock 500e?

I've been running spacers (5mm, 10mm and 15mm) for years without issue. I don't get the stigma.

Hopefully the $700 is with decent tire that are the right size or it not that great of a deal on wheels that you have to make work.

+1 I like a lot of others have been using all sizes and kinds of spacers for many years with no real issues. When I did have an issue it was a simple fix.

I hiss if they don't work I could always cut off the faces, buy some custom barrels and bolt the faces on the barrels, then I will have have two peice amg mono's.

Basically, most MB's except the newer S/SL class (possibly some others?) use the same M12 threads. The first S-class to switch to M14 was the W140, first SL was R230. Not sure about some of the newer models though. EDIT: A quick check of the EPC indicates that a LOT of newer chassis use M14 bolts, including 204, 207, 209, 211, 212, 218, 219, and 231 chassis.

Spacers must be hubcentric and you must be careful to get exactly the right bolt length in the rear. Some people have reported issues with the front wheel bearing dust cap. Proper spacers should not cause an issue, although I'm not sure if I'd want to do a Mojave Mile or go to Willow Springs with spacers. Should be fine on the street or dragstrip though, assuming there are no vibration issues.

Ideally you just want to find R129 wheels, those fit the 500E perfectly.

LOL what you smoken boy ?

You can find the wrong off set AMG wheels much cheaper....

Or buy these clean them up and resell them, with the $ you make you will be able to buy what you want. so in the end they would be free.

-1, I would never run spacers of any kind, no matter what anyone says. I witnessed firsthand a set of hubcentric spacers from the rear wheels bounce of the sidewalk when the longer bolts were shredded in half, when a Brabus monster took off. Now, given the fact that most (if not all) of our 036's are not putting out 500HP+, the chance of shredding longer bolts might not happen, but still...I would never run spacers. Maybe some of you "weekend warriors" might be ok with them, but I track my car and no way in hell would I take a chance with my car using spacers - that's why I paid for my wheels to be manufactored with the offest I wanted vs. buying a set of pre-made wheels with a higher offset that I want to fit somehow. Hey, but that's just me...

All that's been said many times, yet 200mph race cars still continue to use spacers with no issues.

Maybe direct bolt on spacers would make those that are concerned feel better ?

For a track dedicated car, they can take a chance, but I can't. Even the track teams have been known to have problems with spacers and they require retorqueing the wheels after a few sessions. That kind of maintenance I can do without.

To each his own...

LOL I too am on record as not being a fan of spacers, and will not run them on my cars. Irrational reasons, but why run them when you can just get wheels with the correct offset from the get-go?

Cheers,
Gerry

I won't run spacers either. Most shops that do wheel/tire work will not service a car running spacers, its a liability issue for them.

A friend of mine had a set of H&R spacers that were supposedly specific for the W124.036, yet they wouldn't fit over the front wheel dust caps because of the lip. He wisely scraped the whole idea and purchased the proper wheels.

Its extremely rare to find a set of wheels that look right on our cars and have the right off set, I can only think of 1 or 2 styles.

I know this is also a matter of taste, but really besides the SL / E class mono blocks what are you going to do ?

Hey, it definitely limits your options, no doubt. And for the wheel aficionados out there, probably not acceptable, so spacers are a trick of the trade. For my cars, I have wheels that were designed for the cars ... i.e. on my 560SEC, I have period-correct deep-dish Lorinser RS-90s, which have the correct offset and were specifically made for the SEC (and perhaps SEL). For my E500, it's 210 staggered AMG Mono IIs.

I ran the Rial 8-hole wheels for many years on my E500 without spacers, as you can see in my PWNER thread. Yeah they were pushed into the wheel wells a bit, and Jelmer is running the wheels WITH spacers (and they do look better). But for me the slight "hit" on looks was worth not using spacers. Eventually, after 7-8 years, I just decided that the Mono IIs & staggered look was better for my car, which is why I sold Jelmer the my Rials for what I paid for them.

If Mercedes style wheels are a must, one has very limited options for the right fitment without spacers. If other styles are pursued, that look good on our cars - you pay a company like HRE to custom build you a set with your specifications for the offset. As much as I like the Mercedes style wheels, I find them to be on the heavy side and I wanted wheels that are different than most, plus I was looking for a race inspired wheel design that looked like the Evo-II's and found all I needed through HRE wheels. When I will get my track dedicated wheels from Forgeline, they will also be custom built to my specs. I guess I rather pay more to get what I want vs. trying to make something fit.

If you must, yes! Forget slip on ones. Common issues with hubcentric spacers is that they won’t sit flat on the rotor hat as the depth of the hub lip varies from car to car, and usually it is greater than the chamfer or shoulder in the spacer allows. Boy racers (or Ricers as you yanks call ‘em) will likely shave off the factory hub lip to solve this issue, but thats not elegant .

a Perfect fit should be like this :

Not huge fan either but i had to bite the bullet recently to fit new rims on my ML since I screwed up on the offset without doing proper research. But hey, it’s a Diesel SUV so I’m hardly gonna throw it around corners or take it on the Nordschleife

O sorry Drew I have have posted the same thing on ebay for less $, but I'm sure are nicer with better off sets !

No problem, Karl. Those are interesting but not the same as mine which are 10s and 8.5s ET26.

Does anyone know if these will fit our 500e's, direct bolt on with no spacers?

Thanks

What are the part numbers ? Sounds like W220/C215 though they are staggered. I would not take a chance with the spacers, most of them are crap and the whole idea of spacers is for Hondas rIcers.

There are variety of wheels that fit to 036 so there is no point to but the high ET wheels and spacers.

I have a set of staggered S55 W220 wheels that I did not put on because of the spacers.

The rear fits fine WITHOUT spacer with the offset ET46 I believe. However, front need spacers cuz it does not clear to the shock.

Easy rule that I've said already and Dave approved is CLS, SL(R129, 230), E(210,211), CLK/SLK works PERFECT AMG/non amg.

NO CL/S/G/ML/V/A wheels and you are good to go.

I can't understand why there is such disdain for spacers. There is nothing wrong or unsafe about spacers if they are high quality and installed correctly. I guess that's the point, if they are installed correctly...just ensure the bolts are torqued to spec and re-check them after a couple hundred miles. You should do this whether or not you use spacers, btw.

Obviously, if you can find wheels that you like that have the desired offset that IS the best option but if you want something a little different or less common and a wheel spacer will give you the fit you want, then by all means do it. Yes, they require a tiny bit more effort when installing/removing your wheels but really, how often do you do that?

And lastly, regarding spacers being for ricers, please do not tell the Porsche engineers who installed spacers on the 911, 924, 944, and 928 for decades...from the factory. Widths were chosen depending on which factory wheel was to be fitted.

Glen, good reference. I have chrome originals on a couple of my cars and just wanted to upgrade at as affordable as possible. I have run across a few affordable s-class monoblocks. I think good quality hubcentric spacers just might be the ticket. Thanks for all the input and the great cross-sectional graphic-as a craftsman, I can really appreciate that.

Thanks, Glen. I get tired of repeating this although it may keep people from using them incorrectly. I think the issue of wheel bolt size and length deserves the scrutiny.

That does look like a great deal. But here is my dilemma, I just found the s-class 18" Monoblocks 9 1/2Jx18H2 ET46AMG, silver, in great shape for $300 (no tires) !! But the spacer thing is still in the back of my mind . . . . .ah ...

I know 3 guys with E500E's within 30mis of you that all run spacers on their cars with no issues, you wont be alone.

I don't know, a set of spacers will cost a couple hundered bucks for all 4 wheels...the staggered set seems like a better deal to me.

Yes, keep in mind the cost of custom lug bolts (14mm ballseat/12mm thread in extended length), around $50.00 to $70.00.

Just one of many cars comes to mind. A Porsche 930 came from the factory with spacers...it's no big deal, they serve a purpose and are completely safe if installed with correct bolts.

If you shop on ebay, then yes, there are a whole bunch of junk to choose from. If a spacer is made by , say, H&R, you can trust it is good if it had to pass the TUV.

Of course, finding a wheel not requiring a spacer is ideal...but the use of spacers can greatly expand the options.
