Conducting gain of malfunction research

Sheward mentioned this a couple of days ago with this post "An injury to my leg kept me from joining Klink and Jono last time and I haven't been in a while so I'll put out the invitation to go early and hold spots for any of you that can make it.

I responded that I would be there. Is anyone else planning to be there? What if the weather is bad? Will that change anyone's plans?

Thanks!

Re: Caffeine and Ocatne: North Atlanta (Alpharetta) Sunday Aug. 3, 2014

I have to work, BUT would love to have a 500E GTG in the future.

Re: Caffeine and Ocatne: North Atlanta (Alpharetta) Sunday Aug. 3, 2014

I'm sorry about that. I know we'd been talking about an E500 GTG in the mid-August time frame. Unfortunately due to another commitment I won't be able to make that. However, I could do any weekend in September. If we can agree on a weekend then I'll make a three-day weekend out of it and make plane and hotel reservations ASAP to fly in. Is there a particular weekend in September that works for everyone?

Cheers,
Gerry

I'm good for any weekend. I just need to know which one as soon as it's decided on.

Re: Caffeine and Ocatne: North Atlanta (Alpharetta) Sunday Aug. 3, 2014

Jono....Sheward.....Trae.....what say you? I'll make plane reservations when you guys decide. I'd bring my car but unfortunately it's just a bit longer than I'd like to drive from Houston. Could be a heck of a roadtrip though :)

I'm going to stay at the Ritz-Carlton downtown Atlanta. :yahoo:

Re: Caffeine and Ocatne: North Atlanta (Alpharetta) Sunday Aug. 3, 2014

I had no expectations of either Gerry or Trae traveling the distance for this C&C but thought maybe the rest of us (and any other locals)could attend. The weather as forcast could once again dash the plans so I think it's best to re-assess rain chances Sat. afternoon and let you and the others know with a post here.
Gerry and Trae, any weekend in Sept is all right with me for any gtg.

The forcast for Sunday morning looks good, So I'll go down about 6am and try to hold off the masses. Michael / Quicksilver500 may be with me. With a little luck it will be cool with a little overcast.

Re: Caffeine and Ocatne: North Atlanta (Alpharetta) Sunday Aug. 3, 2014

Ok I will work dates/costs tonight late.

Re: Caffeine and Ocatne: North Atlanta (Alpharetta) Sunday Aug. 3, 2014

I'll get my butt kicked if I'm gone the weekend of the 27-28 as that is my birthday weekend, so perhaps 13-14 or 20-21. Will check flights/prices.

Re: Caffeine and Ocatne: North Atlanta (Alpharetta) Sunday Aug. 3, 2014

WE just need to come up with a date.

Re: Caffeine and Ocatne: North Atlanta (Alpharetta) Sunday Aug. 3, 2014

Doesn't sound like folks have any show-stoppers for the two middle weekends in Sept, so I'll cost them out and see what comes up. Flights to Atlanta are fairly inexpensive from George Bush.

Here's the few that I have:

Drew's and my cars (Custom plates are easy in Georgia!), Our friend Richard and Jono at Rich's nearly new E63 wagon, Our friend Dan, Jono, and Drew at Jono's Brumos 500 with the "silver arrow" paint!

It was nice to see all of you there. Great way to kick off a Sunday. I think next time we should visit the recently emerging "old school show" on hwy 92. The 744 club (we'll make allowances for you, Jono). Missing member Trae.

Quick aside, the RENNtech isn't a 6.0 just yet..have one sitting here which May make it's way into her.....but that's going to be a while before I endeavour down that path. Have a lot of other things that need tending First!

Would have been handy w/ the mustangs though :-P

I'll correct my post then! I had a great time.

Re: Caffeine and Ocatne: North Atlanta (Alpharetta) Sunday Aug. 3, 2014

I have 8 inch mono blocks on mine right now. My car is the one with the 124036 license tag. Drew's is the one sitting next to it. That may have been Quicksilver 500/Michael's car with the eight holes but I don't know for sure because I did not actually see him or his car, though I know he was there. Drew can probably answer that question. As a general rule for me it would be no. I am hyper conservative on wheels and tires. If I can't bottom the suspension at speed at about two thirds lock and not have my wheels hit anything except the road, then that for me would simply be the wrong wheel set up for the car, even if I never did such a thing. They will find Jimmy Hoffa and Elvis together and thriving on grilled Sasquatch before anyone would find something like spacers on a car of mine. I am not dissing anyone that does understand, I'm only talking about me.

As Klink suspected, that is Quicksilvers' car and yes he is running spacers. 20mm I believe.

So that's your car sitting pretty Herr Klink.Looked slightly lowered but am sure I am mistaken.

LOL, indeed it is a little bit low. It has lowered itself due to slightly saggy springs. I haven't had the time to raise it to proper design level yet...
:sarcasm:

Re: Caffeine and Ocatne: North Atlanta (Alpharetta) Sunday Aug. 3, 2014

I'm a sucker for lowered, one of the reasons I fell in love with the 036.

Re: Caffeine and Ocatne: North Atlanta (Alpharetta) Sunday Aug. 3, 2014

I'm a sucker for lowered, one of the reasons I fell in love with the 036.

Oh yes, I understand. I actually love the way it looks right now, but I know that it would drive the tiniest bit more to my liking if I thicken the spring pads to get it around the original design level, which would be just a little bit higher. That sounds counterintuitive, but with the stock shocks (which I also love) the rebound snubber springs become effective "when" they should with the car is at design right height. When they are lowered on the stock springs and shocks what one actually gets is a worse ride combined with less body control. So it will likely be going up a tiny bit someday soon even though I won't like the way it looks when it's parked quite as much.

This dichotomy of how the car looks when it's sitting and what the ride height should be to actually drive it has reached an interesting turn lately that modern technology deals with very effectively. Some of the newer semi active suspension cars, most notably an AMG or two, lower as you get out after you shut the doors. Then upon start up after entering they raise up to where they belong...

I have 20mm HRA spacers that bolt to the hub then I use stock bolts to bolt the wheel on. I had 2 piece OZ it sticky rubber which required the spacers then went back to stock wheels for city driving. I just didn't want to take the spacers off, it does make the car drive different. I don't have any issues with bottoming unless its a really really nasty bump, only have one bump in the city that I have found to give me trouble. I bottom my stock w126 out in turns before my 500E.

Klink - I think saw you with Jono for a minute, I was the one with the beard and the PAC-3 hat. I talked to you about 8 years ago over the phone before I bought my 1st 500E. Alan Smith or Jay Farlow wanted me to get the scoop before I threw all my money away :) Both of them were/are excellent advisers as they were/are good at blowing money on Mercedes.

I'm sorry I managed to miss you like a dumbass! I wanted to say hello. I'm sure we did talk in the past, that doesn't surprise me. I have talked to a lot of people about these cars over the years. Jay Farlow is a good egg and indeed he can blow money on these cars as well as any of us. He's always been pretty good at getting customers to blow money on them too.

I'm not positive which Smith you are referring to. There was Alex Smith, an excellent advisor, and Alan Smith, an excellent technician also with a lot of Porsche experience, hence also a bit of an E5E fetish as well, and either one of them including Jay would've likely put you with me for a chat. Well I'm glad to see the E5E thing has worked out well for you, and I'm hoping for another chance to meet you face-to-face. With any luck we will all be able to pull this off during Honcho's hoped for upcoming visit.

+1

I heard that spacers can result in a broken rear stub axle.

Johnathan, Klink, Drew, Gerry, and anyone else in Atlanta.

What do you say about a GTG in Atlanta in September or October?

Please chime in your thoughts.

I don't have my Sep.14 calendar yet.

Klink and I just discussed last night. I think it's going to be the weekend of Sept. 20-21. I am making my flight reservations today, for this particular weekend, in Atlanta.

Is there a C&C that weekend in the area?

C&O's are only the first sunday of each month....:( I'll look around and see all that is going on.

Well, we can just make our own C&C at the Jono Galactic HQ ... all that is needed is a dozen donuts and a box of Starbucks coffee....

I'm sure Klink will provide free entertainment for all.

akkk....charbucks..! I've got some spectacular single origin beans that I picked up from my local roaster.. We might be past cold brew season but I'll make ya'll some damn spectacular pour over's or french press... I've got the coffee covered.

Along those lines, I'm not opposed to doing something @ the shop or the house... If y'all want to do the whole BBQ/hang out/swim etc, etc

Wooo!

:jono:

Sounds good to me. Maybe the entertainment will be watching Klink try to operate a French press :lolol:

I'm planning to stay downtown Atlanta while there, just FYI.

BBQ/hang out/swim sounds great to me Jono.
Would love to try the french press coffee.

Judging from this photo is Drew running spacers on monoblocks ?

And Klink, you no like euro headlamps ?

At first glance I did think this looked exceptional on 8 holes stock rims . Reading on , 20mm spacers explained that . Klink, note, I merely said "looked"! [emoji12]

Oh man Bing, I love the ECE lamps, and I have installed many sets on my own and friends / customers cars over the years. My last one (currently owned by my friend "tcg1122") had the lamps, range adjuster and the correct wipers. That was one of those "WTF was I thinking to ever sell that!?!" cars that we've all had a time or two.
:banger:

My current .036 is a serious keeper, but it is still a work in progress.

Best!

Oui! :klink: Reminds me of the time I was in Asheville. There were signs referring to a "French Broad" everywhere, and it pissed me royally that I never found her!

Guys, it's looking like I'll be able to make it for the first Sunday in September, so we could do the Caffeine event again.

That would be fun. Barring any show-stoppers, I'm making plane reservations tonight to come in on Friday morning and leave early afternoon on Sunday.

Cheers,
Gerry

Be prepared for the A$$ crack of dawn...aka, my biggest gripe when it comes to C&O. I think herr klinkster was there @ 6AM to get a decent parking space!

Jono and Caffeine events are held @ a far more reasonable hour...;-)

My flight arrangements to Atlanta have been made for Friday Sept. 5, returning on Sunday afternoon Sept. 7.

That way I can enjoy the next Cars & Coffee event (I think in Alpharetta)?

I sent the details to Jono, Klink, Drew and Trae via PM. Hopefully everyone can make it?

Cheers,
Gerry
