@RicardoD, @Teddy_West, @bunty660, and a "friend" of Bunty who had the audacity to bring a BMW e31 840i (I'm telling you this is all @a777fan's fault with his fleet of MunichMobiles :nobmw:) went for a drive today. @kegmankipp was supposed to come but he had to, ahem, "work", ahem, and at least @dionphaneuf had a good excuse, which was that he caught some terrible ailment and was still on the mend. I dunno, maybe jock-itch or something, but @dionphaneuf is on the mend so that's all good! :)

So I have to admit we probably have had the INVERSE of a normal 500Eboard meeting. Which is to say, no 500Es showed up. All of us brought, non-w124, non-036, and non-034 horseless motor carriages for our drive. Yes, this was a meeting of 500Eboard members. 🤦

Actually at least @Teddy_West brought the wagon of green doom, otherwise known as a 700+hp E63S wagon, so that makes up for it. 😳 But, you know, if some of us didn't have to "work" then we would have had w124 representation.

We took this route:

which is an exceedingly desolate, hot, and technical route. 52.3 miles of glorious curves among breathtakingly beautiful scenery and little traffic. Let me zoom in on what these 52.3 miles looked like:

1653275246418.png 1653275304771.png

And this is what the route looks like in person:

Key things we learned - @bunty660 has a fleet of automobiles, and you know he's serious because his LICENSE PLATE FRAME displays "Pick'n'Pull"! Ricardo's 964 Carrera 4 hauls ass - I couldn't get him from filling up my rear view mirror the whole time, and next time we will need to bring a w124.

On the way back, I decided to do the route in reverse, so for me it was 111 miles of driving, 14.3 mpg average, and I paid about $6.39 per gallon for 91-octane. Ugh. But it was worth it. I cleaned up my car after the drive and there was a LOT of rubber all over my wheel wells ----- I sure used up those tires!

Some more pictures below. We have to do this more often!

You guys contributed a lot of $$$ in $7.00 per gallon gas to the California economy yesterday !!!
The cost of gasoline upsets me too, but let's not focus on that. We all just wanted to drive for 1/2 a day .... suspend our worries and cast aside our anxieties about everything that's going wrong in the world and just enjoy ---- enjoy being. Enjoy that we are so fortunate to have such first world problems ---- awesome automobiles to drive and lovely roads to drive them on!

OK, I won't focus on that. I'll focus on the hit to my wallet of filling up the 150-gallon tank on my boat, at marina gas-dock fuel prices........

Gerry, what are they getting you for at the Annapolis boat docks? Here's what we have in the SF bay now...
Chesapeake Bay marine gas prices are ranging $4.50-6.00 per gallon. My marina across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Stevensville, MD offers mid-grade 89 octane gas that has no ethanol, which of course is more than $6.00 a gallon. Most of the marine gas docks are only serving up ethanol gas.

I have the Volvo Penta Gen V engines (based on a GM 5.3L V-8 block and heads, marine-ized) with direct injection, coil packs, closed (fresh-water) cooling system, and variable valve timing, so it can run gas with up to 40% ethanol, but I will never run anything more than E10 in it if I can help it (E0 preferably). It is a pushrod engine, though, no OHC. But excellent bang for the buck, with low repair costs, and easy maintenance.

Typical Annapolis ($$$ :spend:) marinas are charging ~$5.50. They get an extra $.50-1.00 a gallon because of the real estate.

@Jlaa, Sorry to rain on your parade. It did look like a great day for you all.

I deleted my post. Please delete my post from your response.

@Jlaa and team, I'd love to join on you on your next run. Random question to you bay area folks, has anyone ever had work done on your Benzes or P-Cars by these folks? Home | JUNIPERO SERRA INDEPENDENT PORSCHE & MERCEDES-BENZ
@JwashE I will PM you! Regarding that independent shop --- I've known the owner Jimmy for 10 years. For aircooled Porsche work, I rely on them heavily --- they are first and foremost a Porsche shop, and Jimmy has several aircooled cars himself. The last big job I had him do was to remove my engine and gearbox and reinstall (after the gearbox was modified with different gear ratios 1-6).

I also have him do wheel mounts/balances, and I rely on them for much Mercedes work that I wouldn't do since I don't have a lift. I will point out though that none of the people at JSP (ever since Jimmy's dad retired) are old enough to have been working on w124s at the dealership when they were new, so far deep w124 familiarity and expertise, I think I would go to Max @ Circle Star in Santa Cruz.

For instance, I had Jimmy do the exhaust system / wheel bearings on my 124. However, when the day comes to remove the engine or drop the rear subframe and replace all those bushings, I might have Max at Circle Star do it.

No problem! Thank you and I think an administrator beat me to it.

Looks like great cars on a great "technical" drive!! Did anyone take the E5E?? I haven't hustled mine around in a while for more than 15 minutes at a time. I need to do so... getting that itch.

maw
In a massive failure, even though this was organized among E5E board participants, no one brought an E5E! Hustling a car around for 2.5+ hours (round trip) is both super cathartic and actually very tiring (lots of focus / concentration --- rocks, sand, sharp blind turns, etc. as well as neck muscles required).

As someone who also loves all things Marine, I have to admit that these Candela hydro foil electric boats are quite impressive. Unlike other electric pleasure boats that throw batteries at the consumption problem, they designed a hydro foil system that uses 1/15th the energy of a conventional hull design. This means that with a reasonably sized pack, you can cruise for 50+ NM at a cruising speed of 23 kn. Pretty good! And cheap as dirt to run. They can't handle more than 5 foot chop continuously but if it's below that the ride is far smoother and quieter.

Obviously not within reach of your average boater but an impressive execution of an elegant engineering concept.

When considering the above statement, I felt like this guy:

So, as far as 500 E get togethers go I'd consider your outing a total failure. That however is 110% redeemed by the route, as well as the cars that you guys brought

Well played, gents!

I mean... she's a big girl to dance around the twisties with, but she ain't THAT big... she's about M3 size, and dances just as well... but I DO understand she might be too nice for that thrashing.

Super helpful, @Jlaa ..as always! My 500E has a leak in the gas line and needs a smog check. Guessing Junipero Serra can handle that. I take my air cooled car to HiTech in San Rafael. They have been wrenching on that car for the 15 years that I've owned it. Always good to know what the current thinking is on various shops around SF. Thank you!
