KEY FACTS

  • This Mercedes-Benz (W124) 500E is a rare and potent modern classic performance saloon.
  • Under the bonnet sits a naturally aspirated 5.0-litre V8, producing around 326hp which is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission.
  • First registered in 1991, this example was Austrian-delivered, subsequently imported to Germany, and it has reportedly had four owners in total.
  • It has reportedly covered approximately 138,000 kilometres, though this is not warranted.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES
  • With its engineering department occupied with the development of the then new S-Class, in 1989, Mercedes-Benz commissioned Porsche to redesign the W124 chassis to fit the 5.0L ‘M119’ V8, and alter the suspension and drivetrain to accommodate.
  • The 500E was also assembled by Porsche at its ‘Reutter-Bau’ plant in Zuffenhausen, as its widened wings reportedly couldn’t fit through the W124 assembly line at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Sindelfingen. Vehicles were transported back and forth between ‘Reutter-Bau’ and Sindelfingen for assembly, painting, engine installation and final inspection, in a process which took 18 days per car.
  • The 500E was equipped with uprated brakes having borrowed components from the contemporary SL, and featured a 38mm wider track, 23mm lower profile, wider tyres, flared wings, side skirts, and a front air dam. Inside, it is equipped with leather-trimmed heated seats, supplied by Recaro.
  • This example is finished in Bornite over a black leather-trimmed cabin featuring wooden inlays.
  • It rides on a set of 16-inch alloy wheels, fitted with Michelin tyres.
  • Equipment includes headlamp washers, a sunroof, electric windows, heated and electrically adjustable front seats, air conditioning, and a Mercedes-Benz stereo.
  • Accompanying the sale are various invoices and spare parts, the warning triangle, spare wheel, and fire extinguisher.

CONDITION
  • Please refer to the photo gallery to assess exterior and interior condition.
  • Specific notes from the seller include: signs of cracking on some of the interior wooden trim.
  • The seller also notes that the vehicle has been resprayed.
  • The most recent roadworthiness inspection was reportedly conducted in May 2025.

SERVICE HISTORY
  • The seller states that the car was last serviced at an indicated 137,000 kilometres. (Impressive - a service 4k in the future! LOL!)
  • The seller states that the ignition system has been overhauled and the fluids, control arm bushings, and timing chain, guide rails, and tensioner have been replaced.
  • Invoices detailing other work undertaken are visible in the photo gallery.

Nice color combo. It spent time in Japan though, it has the EXH TEMP warning indicator, and the headlights are for LHT (UK/Japan/Australia).

On closer inspection of the photos, this one looks a bit rough... photos were taken creatively to try and hide the broken seat heater switch, for example. Exhaust system heat shields are rotted away and the catalysts are aftermarket. Hood center foam is gone. Lower windshield trims are messed up. Could be additional surprises here.
