The interior is upholstered in Palomino Leather (274) with a matching lower dash and carpets. Burl wood trim accents the center console, gear shifter, and doors with an AMG stamped ash tray cover. An upgraded Continental head unit with bluetooth capability has been installed and the seller notes a rattle from the passenger door speaker. Amenities include automatic climate control, electric folding side mirrors, heated seats, and a retracting roll bar. The seller notes the soft top can be manually operated and will require a rebuild of the hydraulic cylinders to operate electrically. The winning bidder will be reimbursed up to $2,500 USD for the completed repair by the seller.
The original 17" staggered 3-piece AMG Aero III wheels are made by OZ Racing and were recently refinished. The faces are paint-matched to the body color with polished lips and the original AMG flat center caps are included. New Firestone Indy 500 tires were installed in July 2023 measuring 225/45 front and 275/40 rear. Detailed pictures of the brakes and suspension components can be seen in the gallery.
The leather-wrapped steering wheel frames an AMG gauge cluster featuring a 300kph speedometer, 7k-rpm tachometer, analog clock, and auxilary gauges for fuel level, fuel pressure, instant economy, and coolant temperature. The odometer reads 123k KMs (~77k miles).
The M119 V8 was bored and stroked to increase displacement at AMG’s Affalterbach factory to 6.0 liters, resulting in a rating of approximately 375 horsepower. An AMG radiator support sticker denotes the 6.0L upgrade along with an AMG VIN tag located in the driver doorjam. Records included in the sale document service history dating back to 2008. Recent service in preparation for the sale includes a transmission service, oil and filter change, new tires, and additional cleaning of electronic components and new fuses.
Power is sent to the rear wheels via a 722.3 four-speed automatic transmission which recently received a full service in July 2023. The seller has provided detailed photos of the underbody including brake and suspension parts. An authentic AMG exhaust is installed along with period correct AMG chrome tips.
The entire body kit and wheels are stamped with AMG part numbers and additional AMG labels are found throughout the car including the windows, radiator support, doorjams, exhaust, spare wheel, fuel door, interior trunk lip, gauges cluster, and ash tray cover. This authentic pre-merger 6.0L AMG is now offered at No Reserve by the seller with a removable hardtop, service records dating back to 2008, a $2,500 top hydraulic rebuild credit, and a clean Canadian title.
Videos below provide a detailed walk around of the car along with an engine start and warm engine rev footage.

The MB Market Insights

The secret is out! Pre-merger AMGs have officially transcended into highly desireable collector pieces among automotive enthusiasts from all walks. Leading the way are 6.0L AMG converted C126 and W124 examples. As the market evolves and more people start to understand just how special these pre-merger cars really are, the same effect is now happening with the R129 and W140. It's believed approximately 50 or less of the early R129s were converted to 6.0L AMGs making them among the most rare models produced. This particular example stands out from the crowd in a stunning color combination and benefits from recent service. The soft top and hardtop can be manually operated but if you want to put that finishing touch on the car and have the top cylinders rebuilt, the seller is generously offering to reimburse the winning bidder up to $2,500 for the repair. While similar cars can be built today for a staggering amount of money and time (assuming you can find the proper period correct parts), there's still no comparison to the originality of a car built back in the glory days. As the saying goes, it's only original once. For collectors today, a car needs to check a lot of boxes to qualify as worthy and this R129 AMG does just that.

Interesting comments from the peanut gallery, about two different cars that claimed to be 6.0L engines but were not. The seller of this car has yet to provide any evidence of it being a 6.0... which could torpedo the auction...

FWIW, I bought a very similar car a few years ago- Japanese AMG “6.0l” with a long story of being originally ordered by a Middle East Prince... It just didn’t feel like it had any more power than a 5.0 R129, so I checked the engine stamping- which you can see with engine in car- and it was NOT stamped as an AMG should be. Do you think AMG builds the engine and just forgets to stamp it? You can pull the valve cover and check cams for AMG part number, or check stroke through spark plug hole to confirm.

A PPI can get to if it's a 6 liter or 5 liter. I won't shame the dealer here (known in California) but was about to buy one and the PPI revealed a 5 liter engine. Paperwork from Japan export said 6 liter. Was the engine swapped at some point to put in a much more valuable Hammer wide body? Or was it always an authentic AMG appearance only car. We will never know. Worse, they put it into a known auction w/o revealing the PPI said 5 liter after I passed on the car. Buyer beware always.

Listing ends in a few hours. Multiple questions about verifying the engine displacement but this issue was never resolved.

As a no-reserve auction, it could end up being a good deal, if legit. Guess the winning bidder could insist on a PPI to verify 6.0L prior to paying in full?

:watchdrama:

EDIT: Sold for $48k to the person below. Guess we'll see how this turns out!

You'll have to either dig up paperwork that match precisely to the VIN or put on gloves and get in there and pull out the valve covers. Or find a local ASN motorsport series commission that can stick a CC checker in there for you!

I didn't go thru all the comments but this auction is off. "Door jam plaque good enough for me" and come come on! You just received a 6.0 and you couldn't have a mechanic friend help verify it? It's just too fishy for me and for mb market place to advertise as such is weird.

Also, im the kindve idiot that would buy a whole verified 6.0 car just to put the engine into my 500e just for giggles

Yep... a video of a full-throttle pull from 0-100 or so would have helped, assuming it was making full power. But if it's a 6.0 with problems and only making 5.0 power, then it's back to measuring the stroke. If it's a legit 6.0L engine, the seller likely lost five figures or more by not wanting to take the 1 hour of time, or pay a shop for an hour of labor.

Same here! Except this is the wrong engine, it's CIS-E... no workee in the 500E.

Deep down I don't doubt this is a real 6.0 and hope the new owner got the better deal but the fact that the seller didn't provide anything at all throws me off. I never measured the stroke on mine either but the noticeable power, AMG stamp, closed deck block stamp, matching serial number, original invoice etc are all there. Eagerly waiting for updates from the new owner!

From the buyer:

"Alright everybody, my mechanic has had the car for two weeks. He’s been fixing little electrical gremlins and airflow/exhaust leaks. He has finally measured the engine displacement and I can indeed confirm that it is a 6.0!!! The car is still in the shop getting the last little few issues fixed."

Happy for the owner, turned out in his favor.

Hey. Just found this, I’m the one who purchased this car. I would like to confirm that it is indeed a 6.0. It wasn’t making full power when I got it. The catalytic converter was clogged up. It’s all resolved now and the car drives like a dream. Turns heads everywhere I go. I’m thinking of starting some kind of channel to showcase my different r129’s. I’m on a hunt to capture all my favorite versions of this car. Hopefully an SL74 Renntech and a 7.3s Brabus are next.

I know that the car is technically a 500SL 6.0 AMG, and not an SL60 AMG. But I chose the “SL60 AMG” license plate because it’s easier to understand. I wanted people to have an idea of what the car is as I flew by them. Lol

Awesome - glad it turned out to be legit, and that it's making full power again. Welcome to the forum!
