FOR SALE 1992 500E, Black/Black, TMU, $60k (Newport Beach, CA)

Staff member
EDIT: Craigslist ad shows $60k ask, see post #9 below.

Facelifted 1992 500E, appears to be repainted possibly 040 Black? Think this is owned by forum member ipxih. Maybe @canyoncarco can pull a report from the CA plate (W124AMG) to find the VIN. There's a CARB emission test record from May 2024 for that plate.

VIN = ???

No description on eBay, just photos. The instrument cluster is not original. It's from a different 124 without ASR, the speedometer doesn't appear to have the ASR warning triangle, and the ASR malfunction indicator lamp (next to the CEL) is missing. Front plate filler panel doesn't appear to be seated evenly, looks like the upper mounting rail screws may be too long. Headlight lenses are from wrong-hand-drive (UK/Japan) E500. Edit - rear glass is not original, and is the 'standard' 124 rear glass.

Molded steering wheel, flip-top armrest, and suede headliner are nice upgrades. Ride height looks surprisingly good for H&R springs; usually the front is too low with H&R's.

I’ve never this car before and I’m in New Porsche Beach at least once a week. It looks nicely detailed and presents well in the photos. That black 040 shines like a new penny. Can’t actually read the speedometer but it kinda looks like around 80K. I like the Carlssons but would prefer 18” and with the H&R lowering springs I would expect a rough ride. Also the interior looks great! The MB floor mats look great in the photo.

It looks like the seller put a lot of time and money into this car. I doubt he will get whatever he wants for it on eBay. I wonder what his reserve is?

My Carfax account yielded no results for that CA plate. Either the plate is no longer valid or its a replica you can purchase online.

The wood in the doors and the rear center console looks tired and sun bleached. That together with wrong headlight lenses and TMU would make me look really carefully at the history of that car before getting too excited about shiny paint and phat wheels…..could be a nice car, but also could be a liberal application of lipstick on a 🐷

Can someone contact the seller via eBay or text message and request the VIN? Seems weird that the seller put all zeroes in for the VIN number in the eBay auction. Slightly suspect?!?

Sellers do this with non-North-American VIN's also. I think eBay's system has some sort of VIN checker that rejects ROW formats, but may allow all zeros as a workround?

It is odd the seller doesn't want the VIN on eBay. It's pretty standard to share the VIN when selling any vehicle in USA.

:blink:

There’s something weird about the DS zoom tube. I’ve never seen one set that high. It might be just a bad angle for the photo (post #1-11 of 25). But to me it looks like the DS motor mount might be collapsed.

Good eye, Terry! Looks like those ZooomTubes® are not the correct part number. Note the connection is different at the headlight. This is why it's sitting "high" instead of level. I'm not sure what engine/chassis those are meant for... don't recognize them:

Did you read the first post carefully and see that the seller is not a forum member? Or click on the eBay link?

eBay shows this sold 2 weeks ago (for about half the original asking price). :hide1:

Popped on Facebook, I was pretty sure that I’ll find original car here
