Low Miles Mercedes Benz 500E W124 V8
This 1992 Mercedes Benz 500E W124 is in stunning condition inside and out, with just 100,000KM on the clock. It is an absolute pleasure to drive, built by Porsche, making the best of Mercedes' 5.0 V8 engine. This car was a real 'wolf in sheep's clothing' and the M5 beater in its day.
This particular car was imported from Japan in 2021 by a close friend, whom I am selling for. It was given a 3.5 auction rating, which for those who don't know describes the cosmetic and mechanical condition as very good (4+ is excellent, 5 is a brand new car). Since then we have had the car professionally detailed and fully serviced (new oil & filters, spark plugs, new battery, new under-bonnet insulation & new gear linkage bushes).
The car is a pre-facelift 500E (as opposed to E500), however, has been 'facelifted' with genuine parts including the bonnet/grill, headlights & taillights. This has been done to an OEM standard and gives it the updated look of the 1994 cars which many people prefer. It also features the rare and quite valuable 'Limited' 5-spoke wheels with nearly new matching Michelin tyres all round.
The bodywork is in near perfect order, with just one or two barely noticeable age-related marks. The car is painted in its original Brilliant Silver Metallic with Anthracite leather interior. The interior again is in beautiful order, with hardly any wear on the leathers, as you would expect from this sort of mileage. You might notice in the pictures that the plastic of the instrument cluster cover has gone milky. We have ordered a new one and it should be replaced shortly. Underneath the car is bone dry with no corrosion thanks to the climate in Japan.
Everything works on the car, including the electric sunroof, AC (blowing ice cold), cruise control, electric roller blind, and heated/memory seats. The car starts and drives perfectly, with no usual noises, pulls or knocks. It has just been MOTed with zero advisories.
In terms of paperwork, it is quite common that cars from Japan don't come with much paperwork (they do not seem to bother with stamping service books, etc), however, the car did come with its service book which is stamped from when it lived in Germany (delivered new to Frankfurt) as well as an owner's manual and invoices for all of the work carried out in the UK. The book is stamped up to 2013, however, due to the condition of the car, there is no doubt it has been regularly maintained all of its life.
You might notice that the car is a 'W' reg. This is a mistake by the DVLA, and it is in fact a 1992, which the VIN number proves. There is no consequence to this error other than it being a talking point with people asking how you have the world's youngest 500E!
Video walk-around available on request. Sensible offers considered.

It likely received the facelift due to a front-end accident; the upper radiator support has no decals and may have been replaced. Looks pretty rough for a claimed 100kkm / 60kmi. Speedometer face is very faded. No "Sound System" option or rear roller blind. Lower windshield trims are coming apart, possibly indicating some extended exposure to the elements (not garaged).

It's supposedly a Euro-spec car (not Japan-spec) with claimed original delivery to Germany, so it should have the engine oil cooler. It does have LHT headlights due to the time in Japan.

VIN is WDB1240361B728412

See Japan auction sheet - the * next to the mileage confirms that it's been tampered with.

Interesting that it got a 3.5 rating when body parts have clearly been replaced, i.e grill, etc. Japan rating system makes 0 sense.

WDB124036 = Mercedes 500E / E500 chassis
1B728412 = chassis number / serial number

Axxxxxx is the first million 124's built
Bxxxxxx is the second million 124's built
Cxxxxxx is the third million 124's built (production ended somewhere around (or just before) 2.3 million, or C3xxxxx.

Thanks gsxr! Then, the facelift models has to be from B?

Thanks gsxr! Then, the facelift models has to be from B?
Facelift models started roughly in the late B8xxxxx range, maybe B88xxxx or B89xxxx. While there was some crossover during the transition, most all chassis C0xxxxx (and newer) are facelift. This transition happened in May/June1993 production. My E500 was built the first few days in July 93 and is C003xxx.

On the move again...

1992 MERCEDES-BENZ (W124) 500E

English

KEY FACTS

This W124-generation Mercedes-Benz 500E is a solid example of the V8-powered ‘super saloon’, which has been fitted with a number of post-facelift components. Under the bonnet sits a 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8, producing around 322bhp which drives the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission. The odometer shows 100,865 kilometres (62,675 miles), and while this is not warranted, the seller states that the condition reflects the indicated mileage. Previously registered overseas, this left-hand-drive 500E was imported into the UK and first registered with the DVLA in September 2021.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

With its engineering department occupied with the development of the new S-Class in 1989, Mercedes-Benz commissioned Porsche to redesign the W124 chassis to fit the 5.0L ‘M119’ V8, and alter the suspension and drivetrain to accommodate.
The new model was also assembled by Porsche at the ‘Reutter-Bau’ plant in Zuffenhausen, as its widened wings allegedly couldn’t fit through the W124 assembly line at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Sindelfingen. The vehicles were transported back and forth between ‘Reutter-Bau’ and Sindelfingen for assembly, painting, engine installation and final inspection in a process which took 18 days per car.
The 500E featured uprated SL braking components, including 500 SL front discs with four-piston callipers, as well as a 38mm wider track, 23mm lower profile, wider tyres, flared wings, side skirts and a front air dam. Inside, all 500Es are equipped with leather-trimmed heated seats, supplied by renowned manufacturer Recaro.
This example is finished in Brilliant Silver metallic on the upper and lower body panels, with a black leather-trimmed interior complemented by elegant wood trims.
Equipment includes an on-board computer, electric windows and mirrors, an electric tilt and slide sunroof, electrically adjustable steering column and rear electric roller blind, electrically operated heated front seats with two-position memory, cruise control, dual-zone temperature control, an outside temperature display, and a heated rear screen.
This example has been cosmetically modified with the post-facelift bonnet, boot lid, and front and rear light clusters, as well as colour-coded bumper and door inserts.

The alloy wheels shown in the photos are not included. The car will be supplied wearing the period-correct eight-hole alloy wheels.

CONDITION

The Brilliant Silver metallic paintwork is described by the seller as being in generally good condition, showing the odd small defect, including bubbling around the sunroof aperture, a paint crack and a large chip on the front bumper, and a chip on the edge of the boot lid; with both chips having been touched-in.
Inside, the cabin presents well, with some creasing and light wear on the black leather-trimmed front seats, but with no significant discolouration. Again, the good condition is reported to be commensurate with the mileage on the odometer.
The seller is not aware of any electrical or mechanical faults, and they state that there are no warning lights showing on the dashboard.
The car’s last MOT test was conducted on 13 September 2022 at 100,715 km, resulting in a first-time pass with no warnings or advisories.

SERVICE HISTORY

This 500E’s latest service was carried out in March 2022. The work comprised of a 12,000-mile service with an engine oil and filter change, along with the replacement of the air filter, spark plugs, fuel filter, battery, and the under bonnet heat pad. The car was also fitted with a battery cut-off switch during the service.
The seller notes that a faulty auxiliary belt and tensioner were replaced during their ownership.

SUMMARY

This Mercedes-Benz (W124) 500E is a well-specified example of the luxurious high-performance saloon, which was designed and built in collaboration with Porsche. Benefiting from a selection of replacement parts to provide the appearance of a later E500, and in good cosmetic order, this example is now ready to be enjoyed out on the open road and would also make a fine addition to a collection of performance-focussed modern classics.

£29,250! Did anybody do a punch list on this one. I'm no expert, but several things leapt of the page for me, i.e. rust around sunroof closure, sunroof doesn't seem close neatly, badly misaligned rear bumper, to name a few. I'm amazed it sold for so much.
