This car was not previously in my personal database, so I have no detailed record of it prior.

I attached DataMB data card + link, and copy of the CarFax report, to the original post, as appropriate.

Looks like a nice car. Probably a little overpriced but time will tell. Apparently the one in Arcadia has a deposit pending an inspection. 80K mile cars are on the move.

I wonder how many cars Gerry currently has in his database? New to the board cars are showing up recently, both this car and the Arcadia car are new meat for Gerry. With approximately 10,500 cars built worldwide consumption, you always wonder how many copies are left on the road. Do we think 1/2 are left?

I have about 900 cars in my personal database, and there are probably another 150 or so with detailed information on this site that I haven't added to the database.

Definitely I have more than half of the cars that were imported to the US market, in the database. Remember, though, that I only use the following to capture cars for my personal database:

  • "For Sale" ads, including eBay/Hemmings/private dealer/Craigslist/500Eboard posts where the VIN is included. These are 100% publicly available information
  • VINs that 500Eboard members pass on to me for various cars they come across (typically these are E500 Limited / AMG E60 models), such as JDM auctions and the like
  • VINs that people (proactively/willingly) provide me for their own car
I do not ask people for the VIN number of cars that they typically own. For example, I have never asked long-term owners like Jimbo or Glen for the VIN numbers of their cars. If they want to give them to me, then fine, but I would not generally ask an existing owner for their VIN.

If an advertised car sells, and someone here claims it and/or starts an OWNER thread, then typically if I remember to, I'll add a notation to the existing "For Sale" entry in the database for the car, that such and such a 500Eboard member purchased the car. This is the only way that I attach owner information to a specific VIN, and it is (again) 100% public information that people post when they buy or sell a car.

Occasionally, very occasionally, someone will send me a PM or post their VIN in a thread here, in the context of asking a question or getting more information about their car. Most often, this is an inquiry by a new owner about whether I have prior records about their car. Sometimes I will update or create an entry in my personal database if this happens (if I have time/remember to) mainly just to record the VIN, or if I have an existing record, I'll update it to note that the request was made.

Sometimes folks also send me photos of cars they come across in parking lots, mechanic shops, or such. When available, they will sometimes take a photo of the windshield VIN plate. Again, this is for database recording purposes only (color, location, etc.) and contains no personally identifiable information, as the car was randomly come across....and the VIN is "public" information as it's viewable from outside the car, as designed and mandated by US law.

I have never made a blanket, open-ended request of anyone to provide me with their VIN, as this is not public information. If they provide it to me on their own, fine. Or if they post it publicly, then it's fair game to record.

Lastly, I do sometimes get information from folks when cars go to auction (such as Mannheim or Copart). Again .... public information and the online ad is recorded as a PDF along with relevant information.

There were 1,528 cars brought into the US market out of the 10,479 produced. After 15 years, between the cars that folks own here (many if not most of which I do not have VIN information on and thus don't have records of) and the cars that have have come up for sale, I'd say we probably have over 1,000 (more than two thirds) of them covered.

Of the 1,528, my estimates range that better than 75% of the US cars are still on the road. I'd say that probably 20-25% have been wrecked or junked/decommissioned over the past 25 years. That's just a guesstimate, as I do have some records of cars that have been wrecked/scrapped, but not that many. More than a few folks have posted threads on this forum about their car being hit/wrecked as well, which is generally recorded.

Cheers,
Gerry

Hi,
You are doing a great job with this database Gerry and you are right not to ask for VIN numbers. In Europe, and France especially, people usually don't like to share personnal informations about their cars and VIN numbers are part of it. Don't ask me why, I couldn't tell...

Yeah... I’d be in Maine for half the money + RENNtech mods (ASR delete, brakes, chip, airbox if you care) and a Seller who’s known the car since the first owner (and is a pleasure to deal with). But maybe that’s just me. The black interior there is a bonus, and the stock brakes and wheels pay for your transportation and PPI (plus dinner and hotel).

maw

I've seen that a lot with Ebay.
The same cars over and over and.....
Very little actual selling happening.

Has anyone seen this car in person? I am talking with the seller. He says its a good car with the door painted but only noticeable with a paint meter. Anyone in Dallas down to go see it? Not my favorite color but he seems to an decent guy. I am about to buy another car but before I pull the trigger always good to weigh options

If you haven't done so already... I suggest getting a complete set of fresh pictures. The ones in the listing are now over a year old.

It's an encouraging sign that the seller disclosed the repainted panel. Ask for several pictures of that area taken from different angles.

Might be an optical illusion, but the front bumper paint looks lighter in color than the side cladding on the doors/fenders. (??)

Yea, I see that too, but to me it just looks like poor lighting. If you look at the side profile, where its more evenly lit, it evens out more.

$5k miles, some wheels and stereo work later... probably better off selling the wheels and stereo components separately... probably.

maw

After a few years this car is now for sale by Beverly Hills Car Club in California with a new price of $48,500.

Presenting this 1992 Mercedes-Benz 500E featured with 87,336 miles on the odometer and finished in its factory color Brilliant Silver Metallic (744) complemented with a Gray (278) interior. Equipped with an automatic transmission, V8 engine, twin exhaust finishers, power-assisted steering, VDO instrumentation, sunroof, four-wheel disc brakes, four-spoke steering wheel, courtesy lights, Nitto tires, HRE wheels, jack, and a full-size spare tire fitted in the trunk. Additional convenience features include air conditioning, electrically adjustable seats, cruise control, outside rearview mirrors (right electrically controlled), power windows, AM/FM radio, headlamp wiper/washer, armrest/storage, door pockets, and sun visors with vanity mirrors. What sets this particular example apart is its great history. With a clean CARFAX report and receipt copies totaling over $40,000, you can rest assured that this vehicle has been meticulously maintained and cared for. The extensive investment made into the vehicle from November 2010 through August 2022 showcases the owner's commitment to preserving its optimal condition. The precise handling and responsive performance of this Mercedes-Benz make it a joy to drive, whether you're cruising along the coast or navigating city streets. If you're in the market for a classic and luxurious German classic, look no further than this 500E that is mechanically sound. For $48,500
Wow, some of the prices for the parts they bought are a big rip-off : Window mechanism : $372 ( Aftermarket $65 as NLA ) Oilpan $1000 ( $843 at MB) brake pads $144 ($65 at MB) No wonder the receipts total over $40k!!

Ewwwww. You are right... those are KYB's.
Dang! That KYB is only $78 per pc from Amazon! I wonder how this 500E drives with those KYB struts.
Too bad the special E500E struts with the special limiting springs are ..... no longer available. :-(

The "early" struts should still be available, and can be used on later cars by drilling out the M12 pinch bolt hole to 14mm... that is the only difference between early/late part numbers. These are made in Turkey though, by Sachs:

And hey, they are only ~4.5x the cost of KYB!

:spend:

I guess they’re better than no shocks but having used KYBs on my long gone Starion. I don’t think they will be even close to the performance of the OE 500E shocks. They weren’t as good as the stock Mitsubishi shocks.

Just My Opinion

KYB generally speaking are crap, and should be avoided. Too bad the owner cheaped out on this, given that there are far better options available for this rarely replaced part.

All this said, it does appear from the service records, that the owner was a fairly conscientious one, and had things taken care of along the way. That is a plus for this car.

BHCC is boasting of "$40,000 in receipts" but actually that is more the result of not understanding your car and running off to the dealer except, of course the $14K in collision repairs...

Yes, a lot of that is $40K in receipts for parts and service billed at dealer labor rates + MSRP or higher prices on parts. Still though, the owner shelled out the $$$ at those prices -- the perfect kind of person to keep those dealerships and indy shops in business!!

For many if not most of us, it is sort of a foreign way of looking at things given the heavy DIY + discounted factory parts culture that is heavily ingrained in this forum's membership. But, it is what it is. God love 'em !!

Quick question...was there ever a punch list done for this [$49k] car?

I have always liked these cars and finally decided to take the plunge last week on the silver BAT car [with 26kmi]. I became fully addicted with the punch list and the passion on this site. I ended up being the high bidder, but the dealer told me he was now asking 92K. My bid was 63.5K...needless to say, I passed on the [26kmi] car but have been on this site daily.

I have read this thread twice, but I can't really get a handle on what the [49kmi BHCC] car needs to get up to snuff. Any help would be appreciated and I intend to learn more and more about these beasts.

Punch Lists are generally done by one of our members who goes by the name of “cascade.” He’s a slippery character who shows up here most often with the Punch Lists when there are cars offered on BaT or MBM.

Needless to say he is a rather controversial person because many of the Punch List items he tends to identify are not necessarily flaws or problems with the car, but rather modifications or small things that otherwise just need adjustment. Many BaT sellers have complained both there and here about him, because they feel that he has negatively affected their final sale price. Not that this has definitively been proven or anything.

Calling @cascade …. We have a PL request. Can you kindly oblige?

@ODK - welcome to the forum! Did the dealer have a more reasonable number that would consummate the deal? Overall that 26kmi car appears to be really nice, but $92k seems on the high side...

:welcome4:

Sadly, there is such a limited number of photos from the current flipper-dealer, that only a small amount of the issues with this car are being shown. That said, PunchList is below.

Note that the immediately previous owner of this car had a lot of work done on it -- dark tint was removed, boom-boom video-game stereo was installed, $$$ HRE wheels were installed, radar detector? installed, and so forth. Some of it tacky, some of it OK.

500Eboard PunchList™

Welcome! For what it is worth, none of the punch list items noted by @cascade seem catastrophic. As well, the fact that the transmission has been replaced is a good sign for car with 80K+ miles. That said, Beverly Hills Car Club has a controversial reputation. Are you gonna check it out in person?

@gsxr the dealer said his reserve on the auction [for the 26kmi car] was 86K. With all of the interest he has gotten he is asking 92K and may the best man win. Whatever...

@Jlaa yes the list seems manageable...I am going in the morning to see the [49kmi] car in person (about 30 minutes away)

Ahh yes. The typical flipper behavior. Have an auction that results in a high bid 20k less than your reserve. Do not negotiate with the high bidder for a reasonable amount based on what the market will apparently bare, but RAISE the asking price ABOVE what the auction reserve was.

Odd that with all the interest, the car still hasn’t sold???

What an a$$hat.

Someone should add ODKs info above to the thread for that car so any prospective buyer can see the full measure of the person they would be negotiating with.
