SOLD 1993 500E, Pearl Blue/Gray, minor damage, $8,500 (San Jose, CA)

Yes, confirmed, the original post with the T-boned photos is gone. Good you captured the photos. The nice looking silver car post with 345k miles is still up.

If this is $6k worth of parts then my offer would be $3k and it would be my kid making all the money and doing all the work.

Oh well, back to figuring out how to make an exhaust mount bracket.

I have parted out 3 500Es and have some experience parting out 16vs as well. I don't see even $6K in parts.

RicardoD if you need a V8 exhaust bracket I do have them available, just PM me.

Jeff

Wait... is it an E500 (W211) group, or E500E (W124) group?

I wonder what the 036 Facebook demographic would look like vs Gerryboard. And also the content, and S/N ratio (with or without Dolby NR, just for Jlaa)...

:pc1:
Ha. The S/N ratio on the 036 FB group is pretty bad. About 50db. For the 124 FB group it is much worse - maybe 30db? :-)

Wait... he bought it wrecked? I'm confused. If this is true, he probably got it very cheap, and is trying to make a quick buck. But he may have over-estimated the value. The high-res photos Gerry attached to post #43 show severe damage. On the bright side, it shows how well the W124 passenger compartment is protected in a massive side impact.

My $0.02 about the repair: He's claiming $10k to fix because he's trying to find a buyer that will naively believe this. If true, why not fix it and then re-sell (or, keep it as a DD)?

Dave,

This is exactly what I said in post #41 above.

Albeit, Gerry’s high-res pics and analysis do reveal much more damage than the original pics.

Now that we know the license plate, is the VIN available? Hate to see this car pop up again looking in its prime but underneath far from that.

Robert

He re-listed it for $5,800

Now we're getting closer to reality.

I hope nobody was in the passenger seat. Never seen one smushed that bad.

That car, 500E or otherwise, has had it's bell rung. Permanently.:hammerhead:

I can't compare to captruff's experience, but I can say that having parted several cars myself, as an individual and doing it on a one-time basis, it's tough to make any profit at all. Unless you're into the car for stuff you want/need, it's near impossible to generate enough revenue fro the sale of the remaining parts to cover all of your costs. And I'm talking about the time it takes to photograph, write ad copy, post online, deal with inquiries, pack, ship, etc., etc. And that also doesn't factor the hassle of storing and keeping everything in preparation for sale/shipping.

In both of my cases I had parts of significance I wanted, and knew they were worth removing and keeping. The rest was gravy, but it was still time consuming and a hassle in general to do it. If you factor your (or your child's) time, it's often a losing endeavor.

That's just my $0.02.

Dan

I'm working as a chassis mechanic at Mercedes in germany. If anyone from the community wants to buy this car for repairing it... you will never be happy with it. The chassis could be straighten out but the metal is weak and the car already has over 200.000 miles so it's "soft".
If you put it on the celette bench it may get it straigt but you neet lots of parts from the v8 chassis.

This car is good for parts but too expensive for parting out.

Latest Facebook ad by seller:

1993 MERCEDES 500E — long time local owner was T-BONED-she is fine. Her husband drove the car to where you see it from the tow yard. I couldn’t see it scraped as it has been serviced properly and cared for all its life. It is as you see it , the insurance totaled it but the owner kept it. Runs great and I do have a bid to fix it. I have one I have owned for 17 years and still use it. So this one is for sale again as I believed a supposed buyer and took the ad down. Runs great and drives fine. All there.

I have seen you are located in Ludwigsburg through the Members Map.
Was that your awesome low-mileage black .036 at the Cars and Coffee at the Mercedes Museum in mid-October 2019? I remember it had season-plates (April to October) from Ludwigsburg and looked super clean!

One more 50% price drop and I'll have a parts car! Wheeee!

:wahoo:
Are you going to drive it home? This car is 20 minutes from me if still in the same parked location. I may mask up and go for a weekend drive to check it out.

Nah, if the seller would actually let it go for half of current ask, I'd have it transported. I'd drive it across town if it "drives", but that's about it. I'm certain there are people out there willing to pay more than I am, so I'm not too worried about it.

Just think of the potential .... 500E trunk badge, spare battery box sheet metal, exhaust hanger bracket, zoom tube rear headlight panels, C- and transmission brackets, 722.365-y goodness....... the possibilities are endless !! @RicardoD you and the @Jlaa should go in halvsies on this beaut !! Haul it up the Peninsula to @Jlaa's picturesque, secluded neighbors-with-Nancy-Pelosi 'hood, and spend a couple of mask-free weekends stripping it! No cheating with chlorinated brake-cleaner, though, as I'm sure Ms. London Breed would be all over you two!!

Jlaa and Ricardo can buy it together, pick out the stuff they want, and send the carcass my way when they're done. Win-win-win!

1588958289311.png

I want to put it up on blocks on @Jlaa front yard to impress the neighbors. I will tape over my cans of brake cleaner so no one can see the color!

I have already been thinking about how to get this hulk deposited onto my front yard sidewalk!!! (remember my lot size is 25x100 - no front yard. :) My neighbors would be so pissed at me..... 🤣

And a huge bonus ... a BE1432 for @Jlaa !!!

The piece de resistance!

It will be fine on the street for a couple days, right? Cops driving by won't even be able to see the dent!

Also on ebay:

There's an Autocheck report included in the listing. Couldn't get it to print.

This car was Titled as "Salvage" back in 2012. So that's two big hits.

No "Make offer" button on the 'Bay. Seems the seller is currently pretty set at the $5800 number.

:watchdrama:

I think that car will come to Europe /like Poland or Hungary, etc:.
for us this price is ok, even myself I am considering to buy it and I know an other 500E enthousiast guy from Hungary who already contacted the seller.
For me the logisitical issues are too big actually with this corona situation.
I agree with W124500E that it wont be an easy repair, but I am not conviced that too much E500E chassis elements are gone. With a normal W124 chassis at hand it is repairable. Even the leather of the seat can be saved. etc
Anyway, a good candidate for Arthur Tussik :)

Post #66 above explained why it would not be a good idea to repair this car. It may LOOK ok afterwards, but the structural integrity will be compromised.

I'm hoping someone will hurry up and buy it already, and the seller doesn't keep dropping the price.

:run:

Ricardo. If you are still interested and things don't work out I'll sell you the mount off the 034. It's nearly identical, the difference being it lets the exhaust hang 6 0r 8 mm lower. It mounts to a ramped area on the 036 so an elongation of the mount hole should give you the adjustment needed. See my post under 034 parts for sale.

So this is wazer who is selling this car? Correct? Wait a minute ... I thought he was building a 500E coupe.

I'm confused. Someone needs to update the wazer timeline that was created, so that we can keep up with what's been going on.
