If it has 199 Pearl Black paint, it's not a true Limited. Could be a demo build as you mentioned though.

I know the car, its part of Bernhard's collection not advertised. The E500 Limited prototype, exterior is 199 and the interior is factory limited Black/Green. Built a year before the introduction of the E500 Limited.
This was a Stuttgart car that went to Japan in ~2006 and then back to Germany around ~2017.

Ahmed, thanks, do you have anything by way of evidence to substantiate your claims or was it word of mouth.

Not sure whether I've missed something but to me: this is an E500 facelift (early one) with full options and a transplanted E500 green / black leather and EVO IIs. Given it's been in Japan, not unheard of for them to mess about with these cars.

Or do we think this is a true 'prototype' because of the company car delivery and funky interior code (cloth wtf). Could be a genuine EPC error, no 958 code and not in the usual silver or blue black that came in. Question remains: why did MB need such a car, it was never shown or presented (like the 500 E at the Paris motor show in 1990) as a Limited, as far as I've read online etc. Earliest photos I've seen are those parked next to the RS2s (c. 1994?) and they all look 009 sapphire black.

Not sure I'm convinced this is a prototype without proper paperwork from Mercedes but equally keen to hear more if that is the case!

1 - Company vehicle
2 - 994 STATIONARY CAR FOR USE ON EXHIBITION
3 - 000 This is not a cloth code, there is NO CODE for the interior !!
4 - No production order number, EPC shows no number while last vin is showing a production number from 1995 !!
5 - Here is an exclusive shot of the production plate, I also have pictures of the car with the Stuttgart number plates.

The deal breaker for me was the time in Japan, Car has records in Germany in the Dealership database (M-B stuttgart) and when it came back it has extensive invoices from M-B stuttgart as well.

This car has extensive official MB maintenance history from 26.04.1994 till 20.05.1996 in Germany and ROW where it traveled/was located.

Ahmed, thanks, do you have anything by way of evidence to substantiate your claims
Well, I think I found something to substantiate @195910 's claims
it was never shown or presented (like the 500 E at the Paris motor show in 1990) as a Limited
Not in Paris, but I believe it was shown in Frankfurt at the 1993 IAA (although not as an official Limited)
this is an E500 facelift (early one) with full options and a transplanted E500 green / black leather and EVO IIs
That's exactly what it was indeed
Could be a genuine EPC error, no 958 code and not in the usual silver or blue black that came in.
No, IMHO it's not an EPC error. I believe in Sept. 1993 (when at the IAA on show) it simply hadn't been decided yet to start producing Limited Editions (hence no 958 code, nor the typical Ltd's paint colors back then)
Not sure I'm convinced this is a prototype without proper paperwork from Mercedes but equally keen to hear more if that is the case!
The attached pdf might not be the proper paperwork you are looking for, but this official Rundschreiben dated Dec. 20, 1993 (a HQ circular "to the management of all dealerships of MB passenger cars"), together with the abovementioned 994 SA-code (in red), makes it very credible that this was a prototype indeed. This letter explicitly refers to (I'm loosely translating from german here) the special equipped E 500 that was on show at the IAA, and that because of positive resonance and numerous queries about delivery possibilities it has now been decided to start producing a limited edition of it, in the paint colors 009 and 744 etc. and that is was decided to give it the SA-option code 958 etc.

And so in very late December 1993/early January 1994 the production of the E 500 Limited officially started. As we know, the first official one (1/951) was WDB1240361C098468, production # 7955933, a silver company vehicle, released on Febr. 25, 1994. It would be interesting to know who bought this above WDB1240361C011620 and where it is located now.

1993 Mercedes-Benz 500E Pre-Limited
Presented at the IAA in 1993 / Limited package product demonstrator / Factory show car
As the iconic W124 500E was entering its next evolution in the product catalogue of Mercedes-Benz, a quest for special edition models and packages was introduced at product development. The 1993 IAA (International Auto Salon in Frankfurt) saw the world premiere of the C36 AMG (W202), and displayed several new concepts to gauge consumer appeal and interest.
This time around, the W124 500E was shown with the concept of a special visual package called “Limited” to become available for the model year 1994 releasing that Fall season. Such package featured a new interior option with special seat inserts in various colors and Evo style wheels, replacing the 8-spoke standard equipment. Special exterior colors for the Limited Package were also launched. Following the Evolution vs. Revolution product philosophy of Mercedes-Benz, chassis #011620 was fitted with a green Limited interior and Evo wheels and was selected to be the display 500E at the stand. Green was selected because news media was printed in newspapers in black and white and green offers higher contrast and visual detail for press pictures. Product development representatives would engage with visitors and members of the press during the show to gauge interest and reception of the product package. The study resulted in the approval of the release of the Limited option package, which is supported by an accompanying internal memorandum of Mercedes-Benz.
Built in Sindelfingen/Zuffenhausen with the purpose of becoming a static show display car as per factory data-card and MB VIN decoding and finished in 199U blue black metallic over a basic blue fabric interior. This car still sports the gray lower cladding of earlier pre-facelift models. Subsequently for the Ltd package, Saffire black was chosen and one of the exterior color options.
Being a marketing product concept demonstrator, instead of a brand-new model or prototype, this car did not get comprehensive press coverage as the official launch of the Limited Package followed afterward.
In consultation with Helmut Hizal (MKB) and Christian Sturm (W124 Club), this car appears in the W124 registry as the car presented at the 1993 IAA as the Limited predecessor. This car was also sporting the S-OM-500 first registration in Germany.
During its life, #011620 found its way to a short ownership in Japan, returning afterward to Sweden and Germany, before making its way to America in 2021.
Records show consistent and periodic servicing and TüV successful testing while in Germany and Sweden, which is evidenced in how well this car performs on the road. Odometer shows close to 69K kms (~43K miles). Exterior is very well kept and presents in outstanding condition all around. Interior is very impressive as well and presents minor weathering on the surface.
VIN is WDB1240361C011620
