PSA: I went and saw this car, with intention of driving it home. Had a PPI set up and had been communicating with the seller for some time as I was readying my trip to Chicago.
Car is a mess. Needs a full respray, interior needs a lot of love and mechanically it's in shambles. Water pump has never been done and needs serious suspension work. Once I put eyes on it there was no reason to even consider it anywhere close to their price. Really love the spec and if you're really up for a project maybe it's for you but it's not being represented as it is. I've never seen a 75k mile car present like a 250k mile car before. Paint is deeply damaged on every panel and there is a terrible respray on each of the back corners.
Car is also actually owned by the "seller's" cousin in Cali so even title in hand is a question I never got answered.

Ouch. Thanks for sharing the first-hand report. The photo back in post #4 made me suspect this was less than pristine, but it sure photographs well up top. The underside had worrisome corrosion on the rear diff/subframe area. BTW, M119 water pumps are not a maintenance item. They rarely need replacement and often last the life of the car, to 300kmi or beyond. Sounds like it was likely in need of substantial mechanical restoration though... Gerry's $10k Law.

:spend:

Likely got it for ~$30k at the dealer and want to pocket a tidy $10k profit on the flip, while adding zero value. Great example of pricing based almost entirely on the odometer, not actual condition.

:watchdrama:

I'm on my 3rd @108K.
That is VERY unusual. Were the replacements OE/Genuine or aftermarket?

I've had to replace one single M119 water pump in over 20 years of owning a dozen different M119's. Oddly, it was the lowest mile engine (<50kmi), and on a 1997 W210. I've got several between 200-250kmi on the original pumps.

:wormhole:

All Genuine.
Is the car driven regularly, or does it remain parked for months / years at a time? I assume G-05 antifreeze at max 50% mixture? Really, really bizarre to be on a third OE pump at 108kmi.

:klink:

The first one was replaced @ 79k mi/12 years (2003). The second was @100k/24 years (2015).

I don't know what specs for the coolant; all service up to first one was by M-B dealers. The first was actually changed in the Berlin main dealer (company store?). The second was by a London M-B specialist. I may have been ripped off on that one as I wasn't really having any problems so feel free to discount that one. I don't go there any more. I try to be pretty careful about who services the car (never myself) bit it is a bit of a mine field.

Now that I think back, it was coolant pump #2 that led me to move my service business. Post installation, I found I was losing coolant on high-speed runs (100+). The reason was the hose at the output port had not been squarely fitted so that pressurised coolant would seep out at higher RPMs. Not Cool! I never let the levels get catastrophically low so no real harm was done. But it was so subtle that 2 different M-B dealer/servicers in Germany didn't spot it; an independent garage in London did and has been my go-to ever since.

With respect to my usage, it was pretty normal at the time although it is less now.

By the way, what warning signs present themselves that would indicate a dying coolant pump?
Primary failure mode is leaking coolant from the weep hole on the side of the pump (or, on early pumps, the catch tank overflowing). This would also be accompanied by a loss of coolant / low coolant level.

:rip:

True or not, the owner told me he bought it for his cousin in Cali, but after he came and saw it in person he didn't want it any longer. Said they paid $38k with taxes and weren't willing to lose any money on it. He said the water pump needed replaced because it was "starting to make noise." 🤷‍♂️

Happy to pass the info along. Wasn't too pleased I wasted time and $ on going to see it. Funny enough, running a CarFax showed it had been taken care of by a shop in Cleveland I take some of my other cars to. They didn't recall it though. Because I really like this spec so much it was tough to walk away from but it would have taken so much to get to where I could feel good about it. Another 30k easy.

I'll be holding out for the right silver over anything non-black interior so I'll be around often. Thanks to everyone who posts such useful information. Look forward to ownership. Hopefully sooner than later.

Thanks. I don’t recall any of that leading up to my replacements. With full and generous benefit of doubt, perhaps they did pressure tests on the coolant system that they didn’t tell me about or I don’t remember.
