1994 E60 AMG, Silver/Black, 231kkm, JDM auction (Japan)

No affiliation. Code 957 in the datacard. Probably will re-appear somewhere in Europe for €€€.

VIN = WDB1240361C066437

Datacard: https://www.lastvin.com/vin/g5xV0d1bpOpEya4LD

Really weird to see a high-spec car like this with the entry-level "active bass" stereo system. All USA models received the upgraded "Sound System".

Perhaps the difficulty in sourcing parts (everything is NLA these days) reduces demand for cars whose raison d'être is to be driven on the freeway like the cruise middle that it is? (As opposed to sitting pretty in a collector-type-garage without being driven) Just a thought.
From my own perspective --- I have wanted a Malachite Green 500E for some time, but I have decided to give up on that dream. It is just too hard to source spares for the really good stuff for ONE car, let alone TWO. 🙁

Looks like it sold for 5.67M ¥ ($52k USD). I expect it will re-surface with a six-digit ask in USD.

Really not bad for an AMG E60, that is approx. 37k GBP, good E500's are asking more in the UK etc. Therefore certainly a bargain unless there are substantial issues with the car such as rust or engine problems. Either way it is worthwhile for those problems to be resolved for an E60.

No affiliation. Bummer it lacks the Sound System (code 810) which is the top-shelf stereo system, standard on all USA-spec cars, but sadly optional in Europe. Originally delivered in Germany before detouring through Japan. Note that it has LHT headlights (Japan/UK).

1993 Mercedes-Benz E60 AMG

Ultra-Rare Factory-Built AMG Sedan, U.S. Title, Reviewed by Doug DeMuro

Highlights

THIS… is a 1993 Mercedes-Benz E60 AMG, finished in Brilliant Silver Metallic with an Anthracite interior.
  • This E60 AMG is a European-spec, left-hand-drive car currently titled in Montana for tax avoision and evading emissions testing. Reportedly imported from Japan in February 2022, it's equipped with a metric instrument cluster, and the odometer shows about 231,400 kilometers, which represents approximately 143,800 miles.
  • According to the build sheet provided in the gallery, factory equipment includes the 957 AMG Engineering Package, 17-inch 3-piece AMG wheels, a power sunroof, leather upholstery, power-adjustable and heated front seats, and more as listed below.
  • Modifications reported by the selling dealer include a REMUS axle-back exhaust system, tinted windows, and more as detailed below.
  • Building upon the already-rare 500E, the E60 AMG offered a bigger 6.0-liter V8 and other AMG goodies like an upgraded suspension, exhaust, and wheels. Third-party estimates peg the total number of E60 AMGs worldwide between 100 and 150 but most historians report that the factory-built cars are closer to 45. These "real" factory-built E60s can be distinguished by the ‘957 AMG Technik-Paket’ option code on the build sheet.
  • Power comes from an M119 6.0-liter V8, rated at approximately 375 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque. According to a dyno sheet included in the gallery, this E60 AMG currently produces 330 horsepower and 437 lb-ft of torque at the wheels. Output is sent to the rear wheels via a 4-speed automatic transmission.

Equipment

A build sheet is provided in the photo gallery, and a partial list of notable equipment includes:
  • AMG Engineering Package (M119 6.0-liter V8, AMG suspension, AMG exhaust, AMG engine stamps)
  • 17-inch 3-piece AMG wheels
  • 500E-specific body kit <-- There is no 500E-specific body it. The body is stock E500E.
  • Headlight wipers
  • Fog lights
  • Power-adjustable side mirrors
  • Power sunroof
  • Leather upholstery
  • Wood interior trim
  • Power-adjustable and heated front seats
  • Power-adjustable steering column
  • Four-seat layout
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Power rear sunshade

Modifications

Modifications reported by the selling dealer include:
  • REMUS axle-back exhaust system
  • E60 AMG exterior badges removed <-- This was a factory option, see datacard.
  • Tinted windows
  • Aftermarket steering wheel rim
  • Electronic toll box

Known Flaws

  • Stone chips on the front grille and A-pillars
  • Creases and wear on driver seat bolsters
  • Missing ashtrays from rear doors
  • Some corrosion on engine bay brackets and fasteners

Recent Service History

Service documentation in the photo gallery indicates that the following maintenance has been performed:
  • April 2023 (231,400 kilometers/143,785 miles): Steering damper and muffler hangers replaced
  • March 2023: Idler arm, tie rod arms, battery, rear accumulator, ignition cap, and distributor cap replaced <-- Only one accumulator? One ignition cap and one distributor cap? And the shop charged nearly FIVE GRAND for this?

Other Items Included in Sale

  • 2 sets of keys
  • Spare tire and Mercedes-Benz tool kit
  • Road hazard warning triangle

Ownership History

The selling dealer imported this E60 AMG from Japan in February 2022 and has reportedly added approximately 125 miles since.

Seller Notes

  • Due to this E60 AMG being an imported vehicle, it may not pass emissions testing in some states. As always, it's the buyer's responsibility to perform all due diligence regarding registering this E60 AMG in their respective state prior to placing a bid.
  • Compression test readings are included in the Other section of the gallery.

I find Doug‘s reviews painful to listen to. “A powdered doughnut switch on the dash” and his remarks about prior ownership of a 500E that didn’t feel all that fast and felt solid but not very light on its feet. I wonder if his first car was running correctly and maybe his suspension was tired. I will leave comment that the powdered doughnut switch was when you get pulled over by law enforcement. The button presents a box of doughnuts.

@Alphasud40,
I have to agree with you on Doug’s take on the 500E. He should have just gave his impressions of the car and not do a comparo to the E55. That’s an apples and oranges comparison.

Although we can agree that the E60 is a much improved 500E it also sells for approximately $100K+ more. To take Jeff’s Oskar Schindler quote “Nice things cost money”

missing rear ashtrays..... in a 200k car.......I will never understand
Is it just me, or is DeMuro freebasing coffee beans?
I understand... the guy is painful... I have physical reactions to his voice so I CANNOT listen... it took me a lot of Zen time to learn to ignore the guy presenting the cars and only focus on the cars... but I got there... and some day so too will you, Grasshopper.

Don't focus on bending the spoon... only realize, there is no spoon.

As for this car, 143k is just getting started. The 30 years is more the issue. And as much as I love the wheels I don't love them on these cars. For me, a 17" with a LOT of negative space like an Evo II can work, but otherwise you need 18". But maybe that's just me and maybe I'm wrong. Won't be the first time.

My car has something over 175,000 miles on it. a month ago, I enjoyed a round trip from Atlanta to Amelia Island and back, 1000 miles. This weekend I returned from a 1600-mile round trip. The car performed flawlessly. No perceptible oil usage for the total of both trips and I never saw another car I would have rather been in during all the driving.

There were a few cars AT Amelia I would have rather taken home.

Less than 30 seconds into that video, and Doug already has his facts wrong. The E60 AMG is NOT PRE-MERGER!! Almost by definition, pre-merger cars do not have code 957 in the datacard. Doug appears to believe that any AMG model prior to MB's purchase of the company in 1999 is "pre-merger". So the W210 E50/E55/E60 were also pre-merger? Alert the media!

And no, Doug, all the AMG cars of that era did NOT have those wheels (5:55).

There was no "factory AMG" exhaust on the E60 (6:20). The entire exhaust was the same as used on all E500E. Someone replaced the resonator with a Y-pipe, and the rear muffler with Remus, on this E60 for sale.

That Victor steering wheel (9:00) was not "an AMG upgrade". AFAIK the (faux?) AMG pedal covers were also not factory, nor AMG.

The "temp" switch on the console (10:40) is aftermarket, Doug, which is why you can't find anything on Google. (Appears to be Brabus Tempamatic display with a control switch on the center console, instead of the usual location next to the headlight rotary switch.)

BTW - the differential has a tag with p/n 1293500914, which is a 2.65 axle ratio... this will slow acceleration slightly, but increase top speed (if de-limited) to around 175mph / 280kph.

Undercarriage pics show that a lot of $$$$ in parts/repair is needed. Subframe mounts appear collapsed, front ball joint boots are cracked, etc. Plan on many months at Blue Ridge Spa post-purchase.

@cascade / @xfadmin, any chance you could download all the full-size images and replace the pics in the first 2 posts? Apparently the "Image downloader" extension I use in Chrome is unable to process the C&B images properly - can't sort by 'Large' so there is a mix of thumbnails and full-size photos. I tried a few times, there is something weird about that page affecting the downloader tool. Maybe it's distracted by Doug's arm-waving antics.

I manually downloaded the undercarriage pics attached to post #21, so those should all be OK.

Edit: Full-size pics have been uploaded - thank you, @xfadmin!!

Geez that wasn't even close to being in the same neighborhood as accurate. Isn't accuracy required for geek status? Asking for a friend.

SWAG is over $100k, but how far above, I have no idea. This isn't a low odometer that comes with a free car, and there are a number of modifications and items missing/questionable, so it will need a high-dolla resto at Blue Ridge post-purchase. Depends how badly someone wants this piece of history.

:watchdrama:

does ayone know the highest mileage e500e out there ?
Yup - it's owned by forum member @Glen! That's 1,068,479 km's, btw. I don't know if a higher-mile 036 exists, with full documentation to support the odometer reading.

:choochoo:

I've wondered if "conversions" typically had the decals on the valve covers, but there's so few 957's out there, and even fewer with photo documentation of the engine... really hard to figure out if the decals mean anything.

:scratchchin:

The 500Eboard PunchList™ has now been posted and is live, at this post.

Overall the car has some needs, but is not egregiously bad. Though, the PL is fairly long for a car that is expected to bring good money.

Hoping that our over-dramatic, "hand-raving," artificially angsty friend Douglas DeMuro does not see this.....

I scanned through the pictures to see if I could find anything not listed and found:

Drivers side B pillar covering loose.
Rear inner wheel well extensions missing.

Exhaust crossover pipe abnormally high on drivers' side (too close to transmission pan)

The body color roof trims are an interesting solution to faded trims.
The fog lights are an interesting well done workaround although the fog lights were still available somewhat recently.

The 3 piece rims are polished & clearcoated centres (not chromed) which would have been better suited colour matched in my opinion.
The left rear centre is cracked at the lug hole. There could be more cracks on any of the rims but the pics are not good enough to tell
I can't stand listening to that Doug Demuro and have to turn the volume off

Can someone explain to me the white dots on the gauge cluster? This is the 2nd time I've seen. Is it a different feature or?
