I know its not a 500e/420, but I was curious what forum members knew about this model (and the V12 in particular). This car priced well?

W140's are generally known to require deep pockets for maintenance/repair, although they are DIY'able. The M120 is also known to require deep pockets for maintenance/repair, also DIY'able.

Put them both together... well, you can figure it out. Great car though. Make sure you've spent some time in a W140 before you buy one. I own one now and intend to sell it... just too large for us sub-six-foot / under-200lb folk.

BTW, is the tow hook cover missing?

:detective:

W140s are nice handling and extremely luxurious but big $$$ to maintain and especially to repair. The V-12 cars are a multiple of the lesser cars for these costs.

There's good reason these cars are so cheap, even here in the cheap-gas USA.

BTW as a side note, just saw today that gas iIs now at or below $2.80 a gallon here in the Houston area. Nice to see it going down so much recently.

Very beautiful and reliable car. Very safe . Our family used to have many of those loooong time ago , S320, S420 and S500 overseas. I had CL500 here in the US 4 or so years ago not sport car at all , but big luxurious coupe.

Maintenance is the same as E500E but I had less failures with CL rather than 500E probably due to age.

Not familiar with V12 M120 but believe there are some ultra expensive parts plus it is really hard to work there .

Overseas 1999 production cars are EXTREMELY valuable among 140 chassis, those in great shape might go up to $45 000.

The one on picture had a gorgeous color but the interior is pretty much shot I believe due to heat.

I figured maintanence cost would be a big issue with that car (have my hands full with my brand new M119; cant imagine a V12). I think the only seat that's really showing wear is driver's, and leatherique and a sheepskin would fix that issue. The big car is tempting because I'm a big guy, but its not like my e420 is small....... :-)

I love everything about that car. I wish I had an excuse to buy it. :(

It is a beautiful car, but I think the other guys nailed it, in that you'd better have a lot more than just 10k budgeted. The thought of V12 maintenence is scary..... :-)

I kinda look at it the other way around... Let's say I wanted to drive a normal car. Normal cars (if you walk on to the dealer lot) are about 35K. Lots of them are nicer, and lots of them are crappier. But that is a middle of the road kind of thing. Low end Audi, high end VW.

Now, instead of that, I could buy this Benz, and stick the other 27 Thousand bucks back in the bank. I am not afraid of wrenching, and if the worst case scenario is taking a few days off work, and swapping in another V12 when this one dies... Not that bad, really.

I bet over 10 years, you'd be way ahead on this car over a "normal" car. And this is WAY more car.

But yes... if you go at this as your only car, or as a way to get in cheap... yeah... not so good. :)

My 500e is the same way. I daily drive it, but if it needs something expensive, no big deal... I pull it in the garage, and drive a different car till I fix the 500. But I am still way ahead, I think.

It is a beautiful car for sure and would be fun to own. I find it amazing how you can own these fantastic cars that cost over $100k new for a fraction of the money. I have about $180k worth of toys (when new) in my shop and I paid a pittance for them. They bring the same joy to me, if not more, than they did the guy bought them new. If that was a car I really wanted, having to drop another $10k into it would not be a big deal. I don't know if that model will ever have the following of the 500E, but if you have the tools and skills to keep it up as a Sunday cruiser, why not?

I had one for a year, got it by default (if that makes sense) . Nothing went wrong and it didn't worry me as it was previously owned by my indie mechanic. In the end it was just too big for London. Great cruiser though - 500miles in 1 tank full!

I feel the same way as you guys. I just spent the better part of the 2013 putting a rebuilt M119 in an e420 I bought for $650 in premium shape (it had a cooked a head gasket after popping a hole in the radiator in AZ construction traffic). Every time I drive this joyous vehicle, I ask myself: "what else I could own & drive for the $6500 I have invested in this car"? The answer is always the same: "not much, and it wouldnt be 1/10th of the vehicle".

If you'd have told me even a year ago I'd be driving a car that had an MSRP of $55k, I'd have replied that you were crazy..... :-)
