I ordered the following 38 pin to 16 adapter. What your recommendation for odb2 tool ? The inspected car model r129 m119.972 1993
If you want live data, you need a digital scanner that specifically will communicate with Mercedes via OBD-
1. Not OBD-
2.
How can I verify it? I thought that this adapter translate the blink protocol to odb2 protocol…
NO. That adapter is almost useless. It
may show some codes or data from the LH module only. It has no multiplexer capabilities and cannot to connect to more than one computer module. Your 1993 500SL has six total powertrain computers, not one.
But when I connect the 38pin adapter to standard odb2 it will work?
NO. There are no CAN connections available at the 38-pin connectors. There is only CAN between modules. Mercedes designed the OBD-1 diagnostics to only communicate with 1 module at a time, using a multiplexer (MUX) to switch between modules. That adapter connects you with one module. The adapter may provide more capability when using an iCarsoft scanner on late 90's models with
both OBD-2 and a 38-pin connector but that is not what your car has.
If you want basic diagnostic codes you can use a hand-held analog blink code reader (~$50). For live data you need a digital scanner. There are some digital scanners that will work with most MB OBD-1 systems, but not all, for a few hundred bucks. If you want FULL capability, the ONLY option is SDS C3/C4 and it must must must have HHT-Win support. These are $500-$600 minimum. There's no cheap solution to get live data from all modules.
Note that for the iCarsoft adapter you bought, almost all the reviews (
link) are for new models that already have OBD-2 connectors. Read the review below from a customer with a 119.975 which has identical engine controls to your 119.972. Plus another one with YOUR EXACT YEAR AND MODEL saying it does not work. Also, a lot of the reviews smelled very shill-y to me... more like paid reviews, not genuine.
