92 MERCEDES 500E - $10900 (Annapolis)

Rare limited production Supercar! Only 1500 imported into US. Five liter V8 with 322 Porsche tuned horses! Graphite w black leather, 87K original miles, 6 spoke factory alloys, special suspension and bodywork good for 6 second 0 to 60 times all the way up to the electronically governed 155 top end! Handling is ultra precise with immense grip You have got to drive this car to believe it. Call Jim for more info on 443-871-6789.

I can't stand it when people claim that the E500E's drivetrain (engine + transmission) is "Porsche-tuned".

(RANT)

Porsche was responsible for chassis/frame modification, most assembly, and interior outfitting of the car, as well as some moderate amount of pre-production chassis/suspension engineering. But the drivetrain was carried over nearly identically from the 500SL.

The misrepresentation bugs the hell out of me. Sort of like when people plaster Porsche license plate frames, stickers/decals, and vanity license plates on their E500Es. It's a Mercedes-Benz, people, **NOT** a Porsche.

If it was a Porsche, or MB wanted to represent it as such, it would have come with a Porsche logo somewhere on the car. Sort of like the Lotus-tuned badging that appeared on the 1980s Isuzu Impulse hatchback.

(/RANT)

Cheers,
Gerry

I totally agree. I only reference Porsche as the "assembly/modifications by hand" guys and not the "builders" when discussing my car with someone who has no knowledge of its history. The Porsche as the "assembly/modifications by hand" guys pointer is more then enough for the listens jaws to drop to begin with. Adding the Rossle-Bau as the factory used to build the cars is icing on the cake.

By the way, I see the MB-Porsche situation with the E500E as very similar to the situation that Chevrolet had with the C4 Corvette ZR-1 with both Lotus and Mercury Marine.

Lotus engineered and Mercury Marine manufactured the engines that went into the original ZR-1 Corvettes. Chevy wasn't afraid to admit that Lotus worked the magic with regard to the engines' power/torque and Mercury with regard to its build quality, and made the car what it was (i.e. collectible for a C4 Vette).

However, Chevy DID NOT market the car as a "Chevy/Lotus" "Chevy/Mercury" nor did they plaster any "Lotus" or "Mercury Marine" logos anywhere on the car. Lotus was simply an engineering subcontractor, and Mercury Marine was merely a powertrain subunit (engine) assembler and supplier to Chevy.

You don't see ZR-1 owners touting "Mercury" or "Lotus" on their license plates and plate frames....

Cheers,
Gerry

I agree since most people dont know much about the car its usually a cut and paste for ad's like this.

....it seriously appears serious people discussing serious matters about serious cars in a serious manner...

i think my URLs are mixed up...am i in a BMW forum...???

:o

My main reason for committing such blasphemy is to get people's kinckers all in a twist on the MB forums! It's great fun, lol!

I don't think it's a panty-twist situation. It's just ... well ... not quite wrong ... but the Brits would say that it's a bit "daft" (i.e. silly or foolish).

Cheers,
Gerry

Exactly. "Wrong" would be a plate frame that said "Ferrari", "Buick", or "Hyundai". Besides, "daft" is my middle name! Just wait until I upload a pic of the plate & frame on my wife's '92...
