Hello you all,

I have a problem with steering box, its little loose and it’s dipping oil. All the oil came out in the winter, so now i’m in the position to change the steering box or replace the gasgets. I would rather change the box but those boxes are pretty rare in Estonia. Can anyone help me with this problem? Send me one here?

I’m interested in any kind of help.

Thanks!

Check in Latvia or Lithuania for an original Mercedes-Benz steering box seal kit. Part nr for reference in case you don’t have it.

The steering gearbox typically only leaks from the input shaft (top) or the output shaft for the Pitman arm (bottom). Where is yours leaking from?

Also, what do you mean by it's a "little loose"?

A complete re-seal requires total disassembly of the gearbox, which is NOT a simple DIY repair.

:apl:

Mine leaks from top side. Where steering wheel columns connect to the box. I know that’s not an easy diy but when i get somewhere proper gasget kit, then i am willing to try. Took the box from the car yesterday, so one step is done already. When someone have manual for doing this, then im grateful of that also.

Little loose means that all the other parts are changed and steering box hafe this small loose, so when you drive with the car, then you feel it. And now when i took the box from the car, it feels loose by hand also.

The top seal requires complete disassembly. Look at the factory service manual procedure, and Google for more info. Very few people have done this. You may need to fabricate some special tools. I've never attempted this myself, I bought a remanufactured box and sent in my old one as a core.

There should be zero play in the center position, but anywhere other than center, play is normal. If you do have play in center position... I'd look for a good used steering box instead of re-sealing yours.

I found probably new gasget set, but it's 100eur, so it ist pretty high investment to just learning and trying to fix the old box.
Also asked from junkyards for the used steering box, but have not got all the answers yet. I think they do not read the part number, because now i just got offers to wrong steering box. If you know or get the box for me from states somewhere with reasonable price :)?

Just make sure the steering box is from a 124.034 (or .036), those are the only boxes which are correct.
