500E About reverse delay

Hello everyone. What do you think about my transmission? Normally, there is no problem with forward and backward movement, but there is a time lag of about 2 seconds if you put it in reverse only when the ATF temperature is high or when driving in midsummer is intense. There is no click sound. A time lag occurs only when you run hard for a long time in midsummer. I'm wondering whether to replace the ATF or overhaul the mission. By the way, I bought this car for about 40,000 km, and now I haven't exchanged ATF for about 70,000 km. I don't know if the ATF has been replaced before purchase. I wish I had replaced the ATF earlier, but I didn't like it if something went wrong with the replacement, so I left it as it was.

Change the ATF & filter and see if there is any change. Remember the ATF should be changed every 30kmi (50kkm) with normal service, half that with severe service (city driving), and reduce either interval further if not using synthetic ATF.

:tumble:

Thank you very much. I will exchange the ATF for the time being.

Sounds like the reverse clutch pucks are worn out; mine is doing the same thing and my mechanic and I are planning to rebuild this fall at his house.

No need to rebuild or replace the whole tranny, just replace the worn out reverse pieces....

The forward gears on your car all seem to be all OK while driving?

I have the same issue: a delay and no clicking in reverse and giving gas it is slipping and gives a bit of rough acceleration.
Forwards is no problem the transmission works fine.
Not really a big repair I understand from Jimbo ?

How long is the delay?

Repair requires pulling the transmission out.

OH! Yes, at 5-6 seconds, that's a severe delay. 1-2 seconds is "normal".

How many miles/km's on the transmission?

:runexe:

109K km
But not only km's/miles can junk this out, I think.
Some materials can dissolve by time in the transmission.

That may be the longest delay (5-6 seconds( I've heard of with only 70kmi / 109kkm. Weird. Maybe the seal for the reverse piston is worn. (??)

Most of the other clutches/bands should be OK. You could possibly opt to just replace the reverse clutches and give it an external re-seal. @JC220 is our resident trans expert over there, I'm curious what he thinks.

Yes it is weird, but sometimes it takes 5-6 seconds, not always.
The rest of the transmission works perfect, really. Smooth, no slipping during changing gears.

Thanks Dave, yes the thread linked below discusses the reverse replacement and pros and cons in depth - worth a read:

Within that thread there is a link by @gerryvz of a How-To remove and install the transmission.

I had created the thread below which gets you the rest of the way there. AKA; re-seal the transmission when it is out. Buy new reverse clutches, reverse piston seal and pump seal etc etc from your MB dealer. It is not easy - but it is not difficult either if you have a decent selection of tools, have a clean workspace, patience and read the manuals and threads here. There are also you tube videos of 722.3 reverse replacement by Victor at Restore your Mercedes.com.

Indeed my preference is to repair my OWN transmissions and therefore I KNOW what parts were replaced. Refer to the specifications within the manuals, carefully check everything and for the most part you will find all other frictions to be in spec normally. Just the reverse is the trouble in most cases.

(Post #11 is the pump removal. Keep the trans vertical and you can pull the reverse clutch pack out too)

Whilst this is a Porsche link, it is a 722.3 MB Transmission and he is replacing the reverse clutches:

There are also many other links out there for 722.3 reverse clutch replacement DIY. I highly advise however to carefully read the likes of the ATSG service manuals and follow it very closely including any modifications they may advise.

The question is - do you wish to DIY it or take to a shop (Either case if fine just so we know how to guide you)

Thank you for your information.
I have decided it to solve this issue by a specialist. I have an appointment next monday.
Automatic transmission is not my peace of cake.

I've always been aware of a 1 (1.5?) second delay engaging D or R. Both pre and post box rebuild at 417K Kms. So it's normal, yes?

The box was rebuilt because reverse would sometimes fail when warm. Not cold, not hot, just warm.

Anyway, all well now at half a million Km.
