Antenna questions

Hi,

These might be discussed here millon times before but I still ask and will be very glad if someone is willing to answer. I tried to search but not find answer..

So, previous owner of my car has deleted the original Hirschmann antenna. As far as I know there is two types of versions available, late and new. Since my car is -91 500E I would need early style antenna, right? I have been looking antennas from Ebay but the part numbers confuses me. There are lots of versions available, so can anyone confirm the correct numbers which to seek?

Then some of antennas have silver box installed. Is this some sort of telephone modulator?

Then are the antennas similar in US and euro versions? I mean that frequencies which are used are diffrent.

If you have correct antenna feel free to offer!

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
jnes

best to check the EPC/XPPI by your vin for the proper number. If you want to post it here, or send it via a pm I can look up the number for your car when it left the factory. You will need early most likely.

I believe that yes, with an early car you would need the early style antenna, called the Hirschmann 6000EL. The silver box is related to the telephone.

As far as I know, the antennae are the same between Euro and US cars.

You can also get a modernized "universal" Hirschmann antenna that is physically a bit smaller, but operates exactly the same and should be plug and play for your car (or require an adapter).

Funny enough, I just happen to have one out on my work-bench, which I will be taking apart and refurbishing this weekend. This is going to be a spare for my 1989 560SEC.

Here are a few photos from the workbench.....

Antennas on USA-spec cars may not be the same as Euro-spec cars. Make sure to do your homework. There were only 2 types used on USA-spec E500E, but I believe there are others for the Euros...

You are right Dave- Euro antennas are definitely different. I remember that the mast is longer than the U.S. antenna masts and also all metal, vs. the U.S. masts’ upper plastic section.

Just out of pure interest:
Can somebody post some Pictures of the US antennas? Never seen them before and would like to learn about it!

Post #3 shows 126-chassis antenna, which is slightly different.

Besides the appearance of the antenna assembly below the fender, the other differences are type of mast (plastic top section, or not) and angled vs vertical (this may only affect early 124's though).

According to EPC part number should be A1298201075 /A1298200875 replaced by B66828099. All these are NLA.

Efraim, no, thanks for the tip!

This from Hirschmann when I needed parts:

The last of these parts were sold to the following distribution channels:

è Worldpac in California telephone: 510-608-5617

è Interamerican Motor Corporation (IMC) in California telephone: 818-678-1200 Ext. 801

Hopefully, one of these companies has the antenna in their stock still.

Thank you and I hope this information is helpful!

I wonder WHEN they dumped them to the wholesalers (distribution channels)...

Maybe someone knows where to begin troubleshooting my issue with my 94 E320 Wagon. I replaced the original radio with an Alpine years back and the antenna worked fine. The antenna would go up when you turn on the radio and go down when turning it off.

When working on the car this year I've made it a habit of disconnecting the battery whether working under the dash, hood, or whatever. But a few months ago my antenna would automatically go up just by turning on the car. I rarely use the radio but play CD's instead. What I've done in the interim was pulled the plug at the back antenna so its no longer operates.

Any ideas as to make it go up and down when only turning the radio on and off rather when turning the key? TIA.

Do you have a dealer installed AMPS mobile phone in your car? I do. I realized that if you switch the phone on and forget to switch the phone off via the PWR button, then the antenna raises up when the ignition is switched on ..... even if the radio is off...... because the AMPS phone uses the antenna to talk to cell towers, and switching on the ignition switches on the phone......

The solution for me was to switch the AMPS phone off via the PWR button.

Hi Jlaa,
My car did come with use of a cell phone but it was removed way back. It still has the same antenna. I replaced my radio from original to an Alpine way back in 2006 and worked just fine all the way up to several months back. I wonder what I did to cause this unwanted change? I need to investigate where this switch is located. I know there's a fuse for the phone near the battery.
Thanks for responding.
-Steve

would this be similar to what you have? If so, which is the power button? Thanks. -Steve

Yes, that is the overhead control panel, but the power button is on the handset. You can see in my photos that the handset is powered on, thereby lighting the overhead control panel (and raising the antenna).

If you do not have the handset anymore, then do you have the main control box in the back? Maybe something has gone wrong with it. Try unplugging the rectangular connector (control and data) as well as the circular connector (goes to antenna).

The phone is long gone. I must have accidentally disconnected something a while back that kept the phone activation disabled. Once I finish my topend rebuild I will "dig in" to this. This is good information that helps. Thank you and have good weekend!

Does anyone know what those markings mean such as F 480 or MOA 4570 ? Those can be seen below the model designation in antenna housing. Pic attached. I've seen different markings when looking for antennas..

Are those only model designations where the antenna originally belongs? Like W126, R129, Porsche, VW etc.?

Well, I was able to source basically new Hirschmann antenna kit. Seller told that it was only tested, never installed.

Hope that this will work and is correct for my car. Luckily there were upper antenna cap/seal with the kit.

I tried to test it to my car but I did not figure out how the mounting parts should install. There were no instructions included. Maybe I can find some instruction from WIS?
