I attended the local Cars and Octane yesterday and had a nice surprise running into member atlanta500e. He recently purchased a local 500E that was discussed here. Here are some pictures of his very nice SL. Johnathan was there as well. I drove a friends 1966 Olds W30 tri-power lightweight. It was hot by 9:00am but a nice way to start off a Sunday morning. Looking forward to seeing his newly acquired 500E soon.

Drew,

Thats a HOT LOOKING 500E you got there. I see you have a RennTech back box. So do I. How do you like the rumble?

Thanks, Terry! The car with the Renntech muffler is Johnathans. It sounds nice from outside the car.

Sounds good...:)

it's not terribly aggressive..i've got other cars that are a LOT louder. but it is a nice step up from factory..and done RIGHT so there is no drone.

Jono

Jonathan,

Sorry for this late response but speaking of drone, my RennTech back box does drone a little. I think the packing in the muffler is gone.

At one point I had my Time Valve Y-Pipe collector in place of the stock resonator but it was way to LOOOUUUD if you get my drift.

So I removed it and replaced it with a MagnaFlow muffler in place of the resonator. I had a guy here in SoCal fab it into the stock MB resonator pipes. That has made it acceptable but I still have a drone on slow acceleration 35 to 60 mph.

I have posted pics of my setup somewhere on this forum but it was a long time ago. Not sure they are still here.

My question to you is; How is yours set up that you have no drone?

that's weird..i've got Zero drone.. cats are still in place, no resonator though. Are you using all factory mounts? That makes a BIG difference on Merc's IME.

I also think this muffler has Very little mileage on it....that car basically did nothing for about 15 years....:-P

Jono / Dave,

I do have stock CATs, My muffler definitely has some miles on it. It was used off of e-Bay about 7or 8 years ago. I've probably put around 25K miles on it but I would have to confirm that to be sure.

I do do think the packing may be gone.

Like I said I am running a MagnaFlow muffler as a resonator 2"+ in and 3" out to a 3" SS Pipe to the RennTech Back Box.

I will try and find the photos.

huh...i'm quite surprised it drones...I would check to see how your guy mounted it to the chassis Not using a factory point. that's the most common reason for drone IME.

Jono,

Sorry for late response. I have been working nite & day.

I would have to blame myself. I mounted it but it is to the factory mounts.

I will try and find my photos and re-post them. I think it may just be out of insulation packing.

Jono / Dave,

Here are some photos of my exhaust system both ways. Currently I have the Magnaflow Resonator fabbed into the 500E Resonator Pipes (SS Pipes to fabbed into the MB pipes and flanges. It's jigged to just replace the stock mounts. Secondly off of the car at the moment is the Time Valve Y-Pipe just sitting in the garage.

In both cases the stock MB mounting points are utilized.

When under the car with engine running it sounds really loud right under the Renntech Back Box. I have my trunk filled with sound 1/2" sound board over the entire flat surface and covering the battery and opposite side cavity where the stock phone stuff was. It is also filled with sound insulation along with the side panels. Also sound insulation at the gas tank wall behind the carpeted fiberboard.
No sound deadening inside the cabin.

INSIDE THE CABIN THE DRONE SOUNDS LIKE IT IS RIGHT BEHIND ME. DRONE IS NOT TERRIBLE BUT I WOULD LIKE IT QUIETER.

Dave, I may have to use the Dynamatt in the cabin like you did.

Jono, Is your system the full boat Headers back or just the CAT BACK? Just wondering.

Anyway there you have it.

your muffler looks a LOT smaller the mine! I'll try to snap a pic...a little busy this weekend but i should be clear next week!

I'm sure that mine was on a 129. The back hanger was not centered because I had to move it to the center directly between the pipes for it to fit properly. Not sure if the 129 was a V8 or V12.
Is there less space under a 129 for the back box?

Maybe mine is a fake.

I'll look forward to your pic.

Terry, yours appears to be genuine, the construction looks very similar to the one on my W210 E60 (pic attached) but with different inlet pipes. I believe RENNtech had some local shop in FL fabricate all their custom mufflers, headers, and exhaust systems... they all look similar, at least on the 1990's cars. No clue what they are doing for newer cars.

Your muffler had way different inlet piping that wasn't making sense, until you mentioned the R129. I think you are right - you have an R129 muffler that was modified to fit on a W124.

Mine was modified by me. I purchased the SS bar and had welder attach it in the correct position so that would hang properly.

I guess not everything RennTech did was the same. They must have adlibbed a little here and there.
