Automatic Dimming mirror, ADM

Hi,

The inside automatic dimmig mirror (ADM) of my .36 stopped working properly. It is all the time the darkest and switch position off-min-max has no influence.
What kind of electronic there are inside and can they be repaired?
How does the dimming function work, would it be clear without power or opposite?

Thanks

The mirror should be clear without power. I sadly don't think that you can disassemble the mirror without breaking the outer plastic in to milion piecies. I was trying to do the same with mine because it was rattling, and after breaking two clips, I just glued it back with superglue.

Definitely post any findings here, whether you were successful or not.

These mirrors were not automatic, they used a switch for off, min, max. If your mirror is dimming all the time, they there is an issue with the switch and/or circuit board. If you were to disconnect power going to the mirror, the mirror glass would become clear again.

As for repair, the most difficult part is disassembly, the bezel is glued to the mirror body and due to age, the plastic used in this mirror design becomes brittle, especially if exposed to high heat for extended periods of time.

Either the switch or the circuit board would need to be replaced. These parts are easy to find via EBay, as the mirror you have was originally designed for use in GM vehicles and retrofitted with a new bracket by Gentex for use in the W124.

Here is one from a Cadillac that is cheap, just remember you would need to transplant the electronics from the Cadillac mirror to your mirror. You could also use the glass as well, if yours was damaged.
