What year / model car are you working on? This forum is for the W124 chassis only, and there is no gateway control module on the W124.

Your shop is likely referring to the Base Module / General Module (BM/GM) and incorrectly called it "Gateway" module. Thread title updated.

It's unlikely the BM/GM has failed and is causing the power drain which is killing your battery. The BM/GM is the power supply for all the other computer modules, it could be a different module that has a problem, and pulling the BM/GM is simply removing power from the other module. You can try a replacement BM/GM but don't get your hopes up that this will fix the problem.

Also, a corroded 38-pin connector can cause this exact same problem, and removing the BM/GM will appear to "fix" the problem, but a new one won't help. Details & diagnostic instructions are here.

Additional diagnosis is needed. Sounds like your local shop is not intimately familiar with these cars. Depends how many parts / much money you want to throw at it, vs diagnosing the root cause & fixing that...
