You may also want to check your alternator. A bad alternator/worn voltage regulator will can eat your battery, I had two AGM hit the skids - most likely to random charging by worn brushes on the VR.

Don't discount your local MB dealer. Depending on their pricing structure, you might be able to get an OE battery for close to what the McParts/WallyWorld batteries go for. I've also heard that using the Roadside Assistance approach can get you the same without having to do the R&R, too, but that might not be the case depending on your status with the dealer and MBUSA.

Thank you all for the responses! I went oem. Once I put it in the car we will see if it is something else. The battery was about 4 years old and on a charger a lot. Thank you again.

Hi, I doubt using AGM battery in cars like W124. AFAIF the AGM requires higher charging voltage (about 14,5V) compared to lead battery (14,0V). Hence the AGM in will never be full in w124 which makes it´s lifetime shorter.

It depends on the year of the W124. Early 124's with smaller alternators (70-80A) did often have outputs below 14v and these would not work well with AGM. Later 124's with larger alternators (90-120A) should have high enough voltage for the AGM's. Quite a few people have been using AGM's with the stock 400E/500E alternator and I've not heard of any reported charging issues.

Note that some high-end aftermarket AGM's, like Optima, may require even higher charge voltage (~14.8?) and these would likely cause problems, and also need a trickle charger/maintainer capable of the higher voltage as well.

According to WIS (15-5010) the alternator output voltage of 124.036/M119 should be 13,0-14,5V. So the top is almost there for any AGMs.

I have heard that here in cold area where it requires more from battery AGMs have had shorter lifetime compered to lead ones. The case might be different in south.

In Texas, it doesnt really matter much. The blasted heat renders many batteries of any brand and type useless after 30-36 months. We will see if my reman alternator and new AGM make that difference. In the recent past, the original alternator and brushes were shot - chicken or egg or battery....they all were FORD (Found On Road Dead)
