CAUTION: Check your Oil-hoses from gearbox to radiator for rust. They can crack causing a mess!

The one on my C36AMG cracked last week, causing a mess, it was rusty as hell in the area below the radiator.
Thank God i was just in the shop as it happened, or well the shop owner wasnt actually pleased to see 2liters of ATF on his floor :-|
See the pictures. My local hydraulic guy made me a new one for just 30€ :wootrock:

Jim,

My trans cooler line is very rusty and looks like it may go at any moment like Christian's just did.

Do you have a part # for it...I can't find it in the EPC.

Thanks!

Andy

The line referenced by Christian is probably the frontmost cooler line .... #798 in the attached diagram: 124 720 49 96

Current price via parts.com would be $68.40 (MSRP indicated at $95)

Cheers,
Gerry

124-720-49-96 is correct for the 500E, this is the metal pipe that attaches to the radiator. Also need:

007603-014106, seals from pipe to radiator, qty 2
916016-012202, clamp from pipe to radiator, qty 2

If the hoses are original or old, it wouldn't hurt to replace them as well (220-997-16-52 left, 019-997-41-82 right) along with two more of seal # 007603-014106 for the right/passenger hose.

:spend:

Dave or Gerry.....

Is this a simple R & R type of repair, i.e. no special tools or procedures needed? How much gear oil can I expect to lose?

Thanks Guys!

Andy

I think so... it's a relatively straightforward job, just messy. I'd try to find some hose pincher thingys (like these) which will help the fluid loss. Pinch off the rubber hoses and leave them attached to the pipes next to the engine. That will keep fluid from draining out of the tranny. You'll lose a bit from the radiator cooler & pipe but it will only be a few ounces.
