Changed the neutral safety switch but the shifter is loose

I replaced the neutral safety switch due to pin 7 code 6 issues I had that was recommended by GSXR
I followed the instructions on removing and installing the switch
The car was in neutral when I removed the switch but now the shifter is loose-no linkage
Engine starts fine
What did I do wrong?
I spent 2 hours on my back so I’m retiring for the evening and hoping to start fresh in the morning

shifter bushings.. clipped on properly...check out the connection at the NSS. Tired eyes happens, especially upside down in tight spaces for long periods being worried on every sound the car may fall....btdt

There is a round shaft on the side of the transmission that fits into the large hole on the neutral safety switch. And there is a pin on the NSS lever that has to be correctly aligned. You also have to align the NSS using a small drill bit or allen key inserted, per the factory instructions.

See the photo below for a photo of the large hole and the lever on the NSS that has to be carefully alighed.

Did you use the factory instructions? Is your shift linkage assembled correctly?

Assembly is 100% the reverse of removal, except with the added step I mentioned of aligning the NSS upon installation with a small drill bit or allen key.

@emerydc8 has a good post, linked below, that shows the "alignment" that has to be done.

I didn’t use a key for alignment
After seeing the picture where to place for alignment, I can’t picture where that is
The black piece on the new NSS fell out when I put it on and I had to stick it back as best as I could
Do I need to pull it out and start over?

Do I need to pull it out and start over?
Sounds like yes, you need to re-do the job. I've never had the black piece fall out, does it only fit in one location? I sure hope so, because that is critical to the adjustment.

This is why we have the HOW-TO articles here on the forum -- so that folks can do the job correctly, the first time, with suggestions and updates provided by other members. A quick search will usually bring up how to do pretty much all common maintenance and repair tasks, including the neutral safety switch.

In this picture, is 54 where I put the hex key? To keep it aligned?
To be honest, I don’t think I connected that back on last night

Thanks everyone for your help
I loosened the bolt and adjusted the linkage
It runs fine
No more pin 7 code 6
But I still can’t go past 35mph
My last thing I haven’t check is the exhaust
