Cordless Tyre Inflators?

OK so for about a week now I've been procrastinating about buying a cordless tyre inflator!

So I can easily go around and top off my car tyres on the motley fleet without having to faff around with crap 12v cables and air lines / dragging compressors around.

I have been looking at the Milwakee item. In particular since I already have the m12 batteries and charger. However it does not seem to get favourable reviews online.

The Ring RTC6000 is a second close choice now since I am familiar with that brand. Dont want yet MORE random chargers lying around but it is what it is.

Pity Milwaukee dont make a m18 version of tyre Inflator.

Any members using cordless tyre inflators?

What system do you run?

I've been transitioning from Porter Cable (20v max) to the Makita. I know that Makita has an 18v inflator, as does Dewalt. Whatever you decide to buy, make sure it's part of a system that you own or want to move to. Alternatively, buy the jump pack / inflator combo as they have a whacking bit battery to work from.

DeWalt makes a great one (link) which works with their power tool batteries and allows you to dial in to a 0.1lbs.

I have only got Milwaukee m18 and m12 really. And a really old cordless Dewalt drill that wont give up!

I purchased the following off Ebay for my annual trips for Car Week. Works great to add a few PSI. I figure the technology is evolving so when it breaks in 24-36 months I can just buy another.

I do like the feature to set a predetermined pressure and simply hold the trigger.

I have the Milwaukee M12 inflator and love it. Being cordless, it's very convenient to use and with a 6 ah battery I rarely need to charge it. It will easily top off a couple dozen tires.

Good to learn that Makita has finally released the inflator for US market. It has been available overseas for some time.

Some great input so far! I see the inflators Jeff mentions and I'm considering that type too. As he says maybe Milwaukee etc will come out with a better model and that would do for a year or two.

By better I mean that Milwaukees current compact offer gets some poor reviews online. It is "only" battery powered so whilst I intend to use it regular it's no good if It goes dead away from home you cant plug into your car (even though it Is 12v! Duh Milwaukee)

People say it sounds "cheap" etc too but I guess you just cant please everyone.

The 18v Makita is a good suggestion but hard to justify the cost when I would have to buy the battery and charger too. (In that case better go with the bare Milwaukee for £89 since I already have charger etc VS £150 odd to buy a Makita setup)

The combined boost / inflator jobbie is also a good suggestion. However I already have a good compact jump starter and combo items like that tend to be middling to poor offerings. Aka the inflator fuction is an aside to its main uses and therefore may be slow etc.

Decisions, decisions. It's a toss up between the Milwaukee and the type Jeff suggests I think

Ideally it should have

  • Cordless ability with decent battery life
  • Optional cable to plug into the car and power it in the event it runs out of juice out on the road
  • Decent clip to attach to the Tyre. (Tire for you USA types)
  • This is the important bit- auto stop and the ability to hook it on and walk away. Aka find a flat on the fleet whilst doing the rounds then set PSI, hook it on and walk away until you hear it shut off and its done its thing then move on.
  • Compact and easily stored
  • Accurate PSI
  • Deflate function or manual button

I dont ask for much eh!?

For a hundred bucks? Nah.

But really, for your application... you probably need something more like this:

Actually, I think this one should fit the bill quite close

I think I even see a deflate button on the hose!

The DeWalt unit Robert linked too had a couple thousand 5-star reviews, which is amazing. The down side is it doesn't come with the AC power adapter (link) which is another $40, and no battery or charger either (more $$$). But still, the reviews are impressive.

Well, I think the Milwaukee offers pretty good battery life, even with the small 2 ah battery.
For backup, carrying a 2nd battery when on the road may suffice. If not, there is a 12V battery charger available (charges M18 too)
The screw on tire chuck works fine and is secure but I can see how some might not like it.
The Milwaukee is a set and walk away device.
There are more compact units available for sure.
It's reasonably accurate, certainly good enough for street use.
No deflate feature, unfortunately.

For me, I have so many Milwaukee tools I wouldn't consider another platform. If they ever make an M18 inflator, I'm not sure I would upgrade because the M12 unit works great as is. If I need more air, I'd just fire up the air compressor.

Yeah, I'm married to the M18 FUEL battery platform. Gotta find a deal on the ludicrous-torque 1/2" impact and a couple 5.0 batteries. Maybe there will be some deals in November for BF/CM.

Yes my big Milwaukee fuel 1/2 is one of the best tools I ever bought. Makes fast, easy work of crank bolts, prop bolts you name it. Coupled with 1/2 impact extensions and a impact wobble adaptor it will get almost anywhere. I nicknamed mine the "nut f#cker". If you get the rotation wrong it's so powerful it will wreck all around it

Joe, yup, that's the one! I have the mid-torque and love it, works wonderfully for 95% of what I need. The high-torque model is for that remaining 5%...

:sawzall:

The amazon reviews for the Ring Cordless item I mentioned above are all inter mixed with their cheaper offerings.

Found real reviews here

Went ahead and bought it on Amazon. I have spent days researching these, stumbled upon the cordless ring model this evening and think it fits my bill nicely. I have 4 or 5 Ring corded air compressors and not one has ever failed.

I'll report back in a few days! If I dont like it I guess with Amazon returns should be easy.

First test will be if I can get around 10 cars say and top them all off without running out of juice.

I've got the Milwaukee M12 and really like it. Plenty of battery power for multiple tire fill up. I purchased on sale from Northern Tool for $59 which was the deciding factor for me. The screw on chuck is my only gripe. One of my schrader valves (E350) has stripped threads and I'm unable to screw it on which is a PIA. Next set of tires I'll get it replaced. Other then that good tool.

Wait for thanksgiving. The had stonking deals on those last year. I'm waiting to buy the Makita version (bare tool)

For anyone thinking of switching teams, this sure looks like a killer deal on a DeWALT kit. $529 for everything below (MSRP $849).

The DEWALT DCK1020D2 combo kit is ideal for almost any cutting, drilling or fastening applications. This kit includes a DCD771 drill/driver, DCF885 impact driver, DCE100B blower, DCL040 flashlight, DCR006 Bluetooth speaker, DCS355 oscillating tool, DCG412 grinder, DCS393 circular saw, DCS381 reciprocating saw and DCV517 wet/dry vacuum. This kit also includes 2 batteries, a charger and (2) contractor bags for portability.
  • DCD771 has a high speed transmission that delivers two speeds (0-450 and 1,500 rpm) for a range of fastening and drilling applications
  • DCF885 offers 1-handed loading for its 1/4-in hex chuck that accepts 1-in bit tips
  • DCS381 with keyless blade clamp allows for quick blade change without touching blade or reciprocating shaft
  • DCS393 with 6-1/2-in carbide blade can cut 2-ft x 4-ft at a 45-degree angle in a single pass
  • DCG412 has an 8,000 rpm motor that provides high power for cutting and grinding applications
  • DCS355 has a quick-change accessory system that allows blades and attachments to be changed quickly without wrenches
  • DCV517 has a gore HEPA wet/dry filter which traps 99.97% of dust at 0.3 microns
  • DCR006 runs off DEWALT 12V/20V MAX battery packs and has Bluetooth 4.0

Depending on your needs/wants, it is a pretty good deal, however, note that those are all brushed tools.

What's the real-world downside to brushed vs brushless?

Less powerful motors that use a bit more energy. And the potential to need brush replacements over time...though I suspect for most, the brushes will last the lifetime of the tool.

Thanks for the info Glen. Just purchased...too cheap to pass up.

I shouldnt have said this aloud since my Dewalt drill's batteries died today. Both of them. So I bought this

The Ring cordless tyre inflator has been fantastic. Really well designed, fast to inflate and battery life is top notch.

Ummmm.... what kind of automotive work requires a HAMMER drill?!??!? Do the construction techniques on the w220 include components made of masonry? 🤣

It seems pretty much all M18 drills are combi drills with hammer action! But yes getting into several layers of w220 sheetmetal requires air chisels, grinders and plasma cutters :sawzall:

Bought the Makita tire inflator about a week ago at HD. It was on the end of the aisle, so i just tossed in on my cart without really thinking about it much.

Used it 1x so far. On my hand truck tires of all things! Worked perfectly. Only one issue is that my OCD is being triggered hard by the poorly aligned display/control panel.

20200917_150223.jpg

I paid the full $99 at HD, so I'm not going to feel bad about returning it and running over to Ace Hardware where the price is $78 after promotions. Will be checking the boxes for properly installed display. lol

Impressions: It's both smaller and quieter than I was expecting. Really light too. I didn't verify the settings with a gauge, but I intend to on the next unit.
Overall, I expect this little tool should deliver a lot of utility for not much $$$.
