Driving in silence

Is it true that there are people out there that drive w/ no music on and just listen to the engine?

I mean, I do this to hear for any odd sounds and if things are running OK.

My sound system wasn't working yesterday in my fast car and I turned back to my garage and contemplated on going for a recreational drive at all. I cleaned my wheels and polished the car and all the night before

Personally for me no doubt I absolutely cannot drive with the radio on. I get irate if a DJ is yammering on or too many ads, I just want pure music, preferably classic rock. Talk radio like non stop yammering about sports, ugh, yuk!

Although I generally listen to music while driving there are times when I also enjoy the drive without any. Just last Sunday morning I drove without any music but it wasn't necessarily dead silent. Drove with the windows down on some twisty roads surrounded by trees, wind from passing cars, sounds of the trees swaying and birds chirping along with the engine!

For me, driving in silence lasted two years into my whip’s ownership. Once I got my cat back exhaust installed, I always bask in its glory and turn off the music on many occasions, especially at freeway speeds.

yes, this is why driving a nice golf cart (Tesla Model 3) was such a joy, there is nothing to hear (road/tire noise). It takes "operating smoothly" to the next level. I am sure most electric cars are like this.

In my fast car, it's my favorite music and exhaust - windows down

I drive in silence in my hybrid a lot but its mostly due to being nyc traffic

I turned my radio on when I first bought the car to make sure it worked and the antenna extended. I prefer to drive cars in silence sometimes with the windows down during spirited driving to hear the engine and exhaust better. I’m probably entering into the geek zone by saying this but every shift point is evaluated and just like when driving a manual transmission I like to be in sync with the car. Same goes for steering feel and brake feel. Cars with a lack of feedback make me feel uneasy. For highway trips I listen to podcasts mostly.

I am a deeply focused and thinking guy so @Alphasud40's description is spot on for me as well, and like you said "I like to be in sync with the car." is the keyword. It's different with our daily Duracell driver, kind of boring because it's nothing to focus on except for the remaining battery capacity.
