I drove from Frankfurt to Munich and to be honest it was not as much fun as I thought it would be. Tons of heavy truck traffic and very limited sections where you could floor it. Maybe not the best section of autobahn but I found the experience very underwhelming.

Yep - there's a misconception that you can go Warp 9 all the time, but that isn't the case. I think early mornings on weekends are the best for light traffic, maybe, @036? And, only certain sections of the autobahn are unrestricted.
I drove the autobahn in a rented Scoda Diesel (a restyled VW for another country) anyway for me it was a thrill to get out there and go as fast as I could in it. My wife not so much. I was surprised how quick it went. At one point I spotted my off-ramp/ausgang as I flew by it!
A disappointment for me was the lack of Mercedes on the autobahn. Quite a few Porsches though.
That's fun indeed. Coming back from the annual BremenClassicMotorShow early this month, on the early Sunday morning, the motorways/highways were near empty. Between Oldenburg and the German-Dutch border I hit 120 - 125 mph in no-time in my 124.092 (1995 E320 Wagon with 230.000 kms on the clock), a speed which could be easily maintained for quite a long time (until entering 75 mph speed limit sections). After the border, in my own country (the Netherlands) speed limits are mostly 62.5 mph, which felt like standing still. Too bad I had left my 036 at home, for this trip I needed the Wagon for all sorts of stuff to carry.

You are correct Dave. There are many sections of the Autobahn that are limited, but late at night & early morning is a good time to drive fast. I drove from Berlin to Rostock in a rental Mercedes a few years ago at 11pm: hardly dropped below 200kph, except where there were some roadworks. Also topped 300kph in an F40 on the way to the Nurburgring, but that was in the 1990's & there was less traffic.

The A8 and A9 are major autobahn corridors in central/southern Germany, and yes are going to have major trucks.
The best time to drive is evenings/nights/early mornings and weekends, when the trucks are off the roads. In Germany, semi-truck drivers are mandated NOT to drive on weekends, unless they have special dispensation based on what they are hauling (critical stuff). That's why you see the autobahn Rasthofs chock full of trucks on the weekends. Typically also, truck drivers will pull in and bed down for the night in the late afternoons. They do tend to start early, typically 6-8 AM.
You should try for "off the beaten track" autobahns in Bavaria that are much less traveled. I'm talking about A92, A93, A94, A96.
