Evaporator & heater core replacement

Hello Fellas,

I just received a diagnosis of evaporator leak of AC. I have 3 questions.
#1. I’m hoping to avoid removing the dash - is there any way that’s not a clear diagnosis & how can I be sure that’s what’s needed?
#2. If I need to replace the evaporator, who can I trust in S. California to do a good job? #3. What should this job cost?
Thank you for your input.

Do you know how they condemned the evaporator? And, how long will the system remain fully charged before cooling is weak and it needs a re-charge... is it ok for days, weeks, months, etc?

I've never done the job but IIRC it's 20-40 hours labor plus parts. Multiply by the local cost per hour to get an estimate.

I'd first verify, beyond any doubt, that the evaporator really is leaking. Depending on the severity, I'd consider trying Cryoseal or Cliplight (@LWB250 ?) sealants before a $4k+ evap replacement. If the evap is replaced, also replace all the vacuum pods if they are original; in particular the two for the main air flap, diverter flap, and center vent. These 4 require pulling the dash to replace. The defrost & footwell pods can be replaced without pulling the dash so those are optional.

:spend:

I have done this job on the W126, the W124 would have some different challenges since it is a bit tighter work area. Everything is really behind the center console, under the dash. Also, one should change the expansion valve because you are in there, it is incremental and not simple - a new firewall seal for the expansion valve also. The dash does come off for both. Lots of pictures, lots of baggies to label parts. Since you are doing this, making the wood refinish a reality might also be a good idea, you have it all apart. Once per ownership jobs ....

If nothing else, sealing the system might be worth it, if not you are still changing everything again anyway.... Good Luck.

I once heard a Mercedes tech comment that the entire car was built around the evaporator. Is there any part harder to get to? I haven't had any evaporator leaks, but if I did, unless it was not a good candidate, I would take the suggestion of @gsxr and @nocfn and consider trying ClipLight. I found mine on Ebay. IIRC the Cryoseal was harder to find.
