Well, after successfully replacing my radiator this past weekend, I lost either a coil wire, or coil. Entering the tollway this afternoon, I accelerated to pass a slower vehicle. Right as I was overtaking, the car fell on it's face, lost significant power, and the exhaust note changed. I stopped into a local shop that was right on my way, and it appears to be running on just 4 of the 8 cylinders. Interesting that I never got a CE light. They say that everything comes in "3"'s. Transmission rebuild, radiator replaced, now this. Hope this is 3 of 3. This is the only time I can remember my wife begging my to sell a vehicle. Don't want to sell, but man I need a break!!

That is the 036 baby ;) It is just a beginning, trust me :whip2:

When I had my first issues with my 500E I was thinking the same "I need a break". However, now I am absolutely fine with the replacing all new tranny, it feels like a regular oil change now :agree:

The good side is that 500E is truly worthy, I would never give up with it.:nobmw:

I agree, I was past the beginning many years ago....
I love the car, its been one of the best I've ever owned. But If I leave it unattended, my wife will have it on Craigslist in a heartbeat. Better hide the title.....

:lolol:
yup for some reason ladies do not really like 036 especially when they know how much $$ it requires every month :whistling2:

Do not worry, guys here monitor craigslist pretty well so we will buy your car right away, pretty sure she will price it low :agree:

I'd order up both coils...Hopefully it didn't take your EZL. Been seeing more and more of that in the last couple of years.

I'd also ask how old are your wires?? Cap/Rotors and plugs are all in proper order, yes?

If the EZL is good this is a Great time to re-new the thermal paste, I'm all but certain it's original and it should be replaced every now and again. I like quicksilver for PC CPU's.

Could you please provide more details how to DIY with the thermal paste ? Any link here on board ? I heard about it but have no idea what it is .

Remove old paste,apply new paste,done.

Disconnect battery negative and insulate the negative battery post, just in case.

Wear a glove and disposable clothing. It can get everywhere and it's a stain that rarely comes out.

I saw thermal paste in Radio Shack a few weeks ago. I think that's what Jono was referring to when he recommended Quicksilver for central processing units.

Dave, does the saran wrap interfere with the heat transfer at all? Is that something the FSM recommends?

Several brands sell this stuff and may call it as : Thermal grease (also called thermal gel, thermal compound, thermal paste, heat paste, heat sink paste, thermal interface material, or heat sink compound) is a viscous fluid substance, originally with properties akin to grease, which increases the thermal conductivity of a thermal interface by filling microscopic air-gaps present due to the imperfectly flat and smooth surfaces of the components; the compound has far greater thermal conductivity than air (but far less than metal). In electronics, it is often used to aid a component's thermal dissipation via a heat sink.

Googled it for you .,. Lol

Wires and coils about 30K ago
Caps and rotors about 20K ago

The shop found visible damage to the coil wire, so I should be good.

Yep - FSM says to leave the saran wrap in place (click here). If you are careful, you can salvage the old/original piece after cleaning it.

Good deal- hope it's just coils.

They are relatively cheap~ Good god man- he lives in Texas. GO to FRY's and get some heat sink grease.
It would be good after a failure to check all the wire resistances and inspect the caps and rotors. You have no-resistor plugs in the car too correct?

Sounds like it! I bet the wire got into the belt..have to be careful w/ routing!

If plugs have anywhere close to 20K I'd change them.

Coil wire and coil. Had both replaced. I'll replace the plugs soon. Everything is running smooth and solid now. I'm wondering if that was impacting my mpg. It wouldn't be such a big deal normally, but I have pads and rotors for our '04 E55 next on the list. Big $'s for the 8-piston fronts and 4-piston rears. On top of the radiator I put in last weekend, the transmission rebuild in January, new wheels and tires last month, and some paint work earlier this month, I'm getting close to $8K. On top of that, I have a $7K backyard facelift that's in progress. Come on winning lottery ticket!!!

It took some digging, but I found one of the "little" tubs of thermal paste we used to get
with new EZL's (and blower resistors on W140 cars) at the dealer.

To think I used to have like 20 of these in my bottom tool box drawer.

Still made by the looks of it

Wärmeleitpaste

The KF-400 heat conduction paste is a vaseline type paste, which is heat resistant up to 200°C, with good heat conduction properties.

KF-400 compensates for any inconsistencies in the contact surfaces between the semiconductor and heat sink.

Appearance: white
Density at 25°C: 2,3 g/cm3
Consistency: vaseline type, non-thixotropic
Melting point: over 260°C
Heat resistance: after 4h at 200°C on a
vertical surface no bleeding
Thermal conductivity: appox. 0,001 cal/sec · cm · K
~ 0,6 W/mK at 20°C
Volatility (vaporization): after 4h at 200°C less than 0,5%
Penetration: 210-250
Acid value: less than 0,01 mg KOH/g
Storage life: unlimited
Machinable up to: – 45°C
Solidification point: – 70°C
