Factory IR central locking & anti-theft system

I have aftermarket alarm system installed on my car which seems to be misfunction. I've been thinking to replace old alarm system with OE system if it still available.
So do You recommend factory alarm system with remote central locking system or aftermarket alarm system with remote control?
Has anyone done this upgrade?
My car is model year 91.
Any idea of parts which I would need for that conversion?

Alarm system is not so necessary but the remote control for central locking is nice feature.

I'm open for ideas!

Thanks

I'm not sure when the IR-system was introduced, but I think it was during '93 close to the facelift point. The wiring from a later 036 will for sure not be a direct fit into an early 036, and the newer convenience relay has to be merged with your excisting wiring as well. I have a 99% complete IR-wiring laying, stripped from a S124 Brabus 3.4, but I will never take on the job to install it in the car. It is not an impossible job, but is it really worth it? I have an aftermarket remote locking system & alarm in my '92 and it works great.

Here's the IR-system wiring along with the convenience relay for that particular car it came from, S124. Some of the end connections/plugs are cut for simplicity during stripping from the car, and the IR-sensors are missing. The wiring is different from what the 036 has or W124 cars generally, however - it's technically the same system so I guess the routing and wire lengths are the most differing.

I don't have any plans for installing this, I just got it cheaply along with various items from that parts car. It's handy to have some wiring for comparison sometimes, and some spare OE wiring with correct colors for repairs & mods etc..

I fit toad category one alarms to my w124's and remove all the factory stuff which was either already defective or..... Crap! This is the one I fit-

The Toad alarms are very good value & very reliable. They come with 2 fobs. The key fob unlocks / locks the car so you don't to use the key anymore. (Very handy when the tumbler is frozen!)

They also have a dual channel immobiliser that you can wire to any 2 items (Fuel pump etc) You can get discount on your insurance also I'm most cases by fitting a category one alarm system. They are also fully programmable - I have mine de-tuned as much as possible to suit my taste. So for example the 'Passive Arm' finction is off and it is functioning as just basic lock / unlock and immobiliser function. I don't want the doors locking when I drive off for example so I turn most stuff off in them. Good thing is too that if your car sits around at times the Toad alarms don't go buckshit crazy when the battery goes flat. They stay silent and give no trouble at all. The Siren is small but mega powerful & easy to locate. It also works perfect with the factory vacuum pump central locking system.

In any case- here are the generic pin outs for most MB Becker factory alarms from early 90's. (You can use most connections you need from the old alarm plugs - but do check the wires first as some may well the different in your car)

There are two (2) connectors on the Becker alarm that contain all the wires for the alarm system. The smaller 8-pin one is X1 and the larger 14-pin one is X2.

X1-8-pole connector

1-Blk/Yel--Horn output, to the horn's positive input.
2-Gry/Wht--To side marker lights. (one side)
3-Gry--To side marker lights. (the other side.)
4-Red/Wht--Power from Aux fuse holder #3 (16a).
5-Red/Yel--Power from Aux fuse holder #4 (16a).
6-Grn/Yel--Disarm input from door switches.
7-Yel/Blu--Arm input from door switches.
8-Wht/Yel--To headlights. H/L positive. Could be used for the dome light feature in some alarms.

X2-14-pole connector

1-Brn/Wht--Ground when armed. Goes to the hood switch and is taped on the side.
2-Brn--Unit Ground.
3-Red--Power input from fuse #12 (8a).
4-Yel/Red--Locking input from trunk.
5-Grn--Locking input from rt/ft door.
6-Blu--Locking input from lt/ft door.
7-Brn/Gry--Input from front door switches. (-) To my alarm instant input.
8-Gry/Yel--Input from rear door switches. (-) To my alarm door input.
9-Gry/Brn--Hood input. (-) Also on my alarm instant input.
10-Brn/Yel--Trunk lid switch input. (+) Don't be fooled by the WD, this wire is hot, not gnd.
11-Grn/Blu--Anti-towing sensor input.
12-Brn/Blu--Radio removed input.
13-Yel--Brakes applied input. (+)
14-Blk--Ignition input. (+)

You should pull the passenger mat and metal tray behind it to see if your car still has the factory alarm module fitted. Or indeed how the aftermarket unit was wired in :watchdrama:

HI,
Considering the different connections with the doors, the trunk, the hood, the parking brake pedal, the driver's door's and the trunk's receptor, etc... and the effect on the ignition of the car which it is suppose to switch off when it is on, yes it seems a hard job to post install an OEM infra red alarm on a 036 for me.
That said, it works very well, the only thing I miss being the anti levelling of the car alarm.

Can someone tell me the exact dimensions and position of the hole for IE sensor on the back panel?
I want to install it, but hav no hole in the panel.

Here is some phone pics taken last night. The distance between the lock button and the IR-sensor may look like 139 mm, but keep in mind that the button can be wiggled a little bit, so you won't miss with using 140 mm.

The vertical distance was tricky to show with a phone photo, but below the rounded corner does the plate flatten out towards the chassis. The distance is in line with that short, flat surface.

Hope it helps.
