the only modification that my car has so far( done by previous owner and also a good friend). being a euro car it has a an "E & S" switch, does this now become ineffective, whether in E or S, since modified?
quite honestly i don't feel a lot of difference either way.

I don't understand your post! Did you have standard FGS or was it added later? What mods were done that caused the FGS to quit working? BTW, if you can't feel the difference, perhaps it wasn't working before either...mine delivers a noticable kick from a standing start.

On Euro-spec cars, the E/S switch changes the part-throttle upshift points. I believe E(conomy) is the standard upshifts, S(port) triggers higher-RPM upshifts (again, this affects part-throttle only). If there is a vacuum or electrical fault, it will default to the "E" shift points. (I hope I don't have this backwards - maybe someone with a Euro car can verify.)

North American cars did not get the E/S switch at all - no idea why, probably emissions related though. However it is a common upgrade to add a first gear start (FGS) module, and then add the E/S switch to select between first or second gear start, which is obviously not the same as the factory purpose for this switch.

sorry dean, FGS was added later, it has'nt quit working and it is noticeable! my questions was regarding the E & S switch and that i don't seem to feel the difference in either selection. Basically it still pulls in 1st gear from standing whether in E or S. As far as i know all E500E's were set to start in 2nd gear and that FGS was a later modification by many owners. I'm not sure on the type of mod but it sure does kick, which most times i don't need. Can't contact the previous owner at the moment.

I have the E/S switch installed in conjunction with the BergWerks FGS system. I use the E/S switch to control the "standard" second-gear start in the "S" position and the "performance mode" first-gear start in the "E" position. A separate small round switch installed between the rear windows switches controls the "on/off" of the entire FGS system.

Cheers,
Gerry
