I have some service records that I received from the previous owner and some that I was able to keep from service under factory extended warranty ( Star Mark ). All warranty work was done at Mercedes Benz of South Bay.

Color is definitely grey. I thought that it was charcoal grey, but not sure. Definitely not black. I can check the color code for you when I get home. I am sure that it is listed in the vehicle documentation. The monotone paint was done at Mercedes Benz of South Bay. I am sure that they contracted it out. It was done in 2001. The transmission was rebuilt at Mercedes Benz of South Bay at around 87K. The radiator and hoses were replaced at around 103k. The car runs fantastic.


Recommended attention:

- The headliner is starting to show signs of degradation ( minor sagging ). I would have performed this repair, but the Wife and Baby are of higher priority ( I am sure you understand ).
- Replace air intake ducts

It is due for the following maintenance ( which I will get to eventually ):
- brake fluid flush
- oil change
- Air filter cleaning ( K&N filters are installed )

FYI, the datacard says paint code 199, Pearl Black Metallic (aka "blue black"). Some people refer to this as charcoal, or charcoal gray, because it's not solid black like the 040 paint.

Also, new headliners went up in price as of January to nearly $1000 MSRP, so if you want to keep it all factory stock, factor that in. The headliner could be recovered by a local shop for probably 1/2 to 1/3 that much.

- Custom steering wheel and stereo system

Headliner is $16 at the junkyard where i go usually (Sun Valley, CA).
The only thing is to be lucky and find a face-lifted 4-door w124 and find it in time before people start trashing it.

To replace the headliner is piece of cake.

You are lucky that you have a local source for good used headliners! And super cheap, too. Most of us are not so fortunate. Late 124's are very rare in the salvage yards near me.

Don't forget you need a van, pickup, trailer, or at least station wagon to transport the 1-piece headliner...

The car looks good from the pictures, but you have to see it in person to pass judgement. As far as the PPI, I can recommend a good shop, but the shop is 45 miles north of Redondo Beach. Don't know any shop in the beach areas to recommend.

Another shop that is closer, has done some light work on my car, is Dynamic Performance in Manhattan Beach. Seem like knowledgeable guys, but can't vouch for them given all they have done is replace cap/rotor and some SLS accumulator work. Probably less than 5 miles away tho (and 2 blocks from my house so I can help look at it firsthand.)

A PPI is not complex on an 036, unless the shop is clueless to begin with...which sounds like Silver Star Mercedes might be.

Scratch that shop of the list of shops to take an 036 to in SoCal.

I'm sure this is the case. A lot of dealerships do the same.....

A PPI should be able to find all issues that need attention, the trick is to leave the car in the shop long enough to check everything and that takes time and some $.

If a shop has knowledgeable techs, there shouldn't be any fear of missed items and even if the techs are not too savvy in the 036, a good tech should know the principal of the Mercedes cars to begin with. The 036 is not rocket science.

As far as peeps trying to sue shops for missed items, those peeps are asswipes and nothing more. If one is thinking of buying a used car, do some f'ing reading first and get a list of must checked items to address during the PPI...we do have the means nowadays. I for one, couldn't ever have the gall to sue a shop for a missed item and I do not believe an honest shop should be held accountable at this point...unless everything they touch they lie about.

PPI at the stealership is flat out nuts.

The problem with Silver Star is that the owner sometimes is overwhelm by business and he feels that he can keep his level of business for granted. He has mentioned in the past that he doesn't need any more new customers walking through the door. Hard to believe with today's economy. Is more about his personality, he is knowledgeable and has the skills, but lacks of criteria. Sorry about my non-working reference.

Looks pretty good, but it has an East Coast upbringing and needs appropriate wheels. the 19's look awkward and they are Brabus fakes, so theyre worthless to me. So, it needs a headliner, wheels and rubber, some exceptional Audio attention to remove all that crap and to get a Becker head unit. Hopefully the wiring harness has not been raped to accomidate the stereo etc.. I prefer stock, however, I kinda like the cladding painted the same color. it looks clean, but these are only pics. I will go take a look and Vince seems like a nice honest fellow to boot. Regardless, it is always fun to go look at cars and this one is close, which I like too. I am still working on a vehicle or two, but they involve shipping and all that aggravation.

agree on that . That is why I keep my interior completely stock otherwise what is the point of the classic benz.

Car seemed rough in most areas even with the mileage. Owner is a nice fellow, but knew little to nothing about my inquiries about maintenance or issues I pointed out in terms of condition of the body, paint panels etc. all pre ppi issues. Not for me but a good 9k - 10k car. I get the feeling deferred maintenance is significant, but the owner was not very knowledgeable 'it is what it is' was the answer for most inquiries. FWIW.
