1993 Mercedes Benz 500E 5.0L V8 HAND-BUILT BY PORSCHE
I became the second owner of this car about ten years ago, and purchased it from the dealer who took it in on trade from the original owner. I'm selling it because we have more cars than we can drive, and I hate to have this car just sitting around when it was designed to be driven. This model, the very limited production 500E, had an original sticker price in 1993 of $ 86,000. They all came fully loaded. The car is mechanically sound. The engine is very strong (strong and exceptionally torquey). The rust in the wheel wells and on a few additional areas is unfortunate, because the automobile is otherwise in very good shape. One could have the body work and paint work done to make it perfect, or it could just be driven the way it is, without doing anything to it. The transmission lost reverse earlier this year, so I had the transmission completely rebuilt. Shifting and overall performance is very good. This particular model was a high performance project, jointly executed by Mercedes and Porsche. The car doesn't drive handle anything like the 320E, or the later E500's. The performance is far superior. Everything in this car is dialed-up compared to the standard versions. Torque is constant and very impressive starting at about 1000 rpm. The engine runs and sounds like a high performance engine should.
The car came, originally, with a high performance BOSE speaker and amplifier system. The stereo unit in the dash had the factory theft code system. When the battery was disconnected during a service checkup, the code would not unlock the stereo. So I pulled the unit out and bought a replacement cd player, tuner, amp, which I will include but have not yet installed. If you are particular about having the original stereo in the car, you might be able to find one on EBay. The wiring has not been altered, and an original style deck should plug right in.
Due to the additional torque, the 500E was equipped with the rear end out of the V12 600SEL. This eliminated the possibilities for a bench seat in the rear, so the rear has two Recaro bucket seats. The fronts are Recaro electric buckets as well, and are heated. The Mirrors are electric, but the mirror control button works intermittently, so I have been manually adjusting the mirrors when I need to. I have not checked into the cost of a new switch, but it can't be a big ticket item. Replacing it might require a few tricks, as most Mercedes repairs do, as it is not very obvious how the switch comes out.
The car comes with two sets of wheels. The wheels that are currently on the car are AMG Mercedes wheels, 17", with tires that will get you anywhere in the country, but are due to be replaced soon. The original 16" wheels come mounted with snow tires, and the snows are in good condition. (Yes, this car is GREAT in the snow. It features a computerized anti-slip system that really works well. In fact, on icy and snowy mountain passes, this car goes up without a hitch, where many four wheel drive cars have problems.
The headlights are the european version headlights. The outer lens on the drivers side has a crack in it, as can be seen in the pictures. The headlight works fine and the crack does not affect its performance.
If you would like more information about the car, please feel free to drop me an email with your questions. I will try to get back to you asap. The car is located in Boulder, Colorado , (USA). I will be happy to help in the event that you have a truck pick up the car. However, the price for this listing is based on pick-up in Boulder, and does not include shipping charges. You will be responsible for arranging your own shipping. Or, of course, you can pick up the car.
All sales final. Conditions is AS-IS. No Warranties.

Honestly, with major rust issues, the car is probably best suited as (and destined to be, sooner than later) a parts car. What a bummer.

If it's structurally sound (would need careful inspection), it could be an ideal track rat. But not at that price. Major bummer. I haven't seen any 124 with rust this bad in a long time.

There was another 500E with major rust (as bad, or worse) in the nor'east a while ago, for closer to $4k, IIRC. Unfortunately the muppet who posted it for sale deleted all the photos from the forum after he sold it. I'm still pissed about that.

:smack:

As we all know this is a great car, I agree that a complete and thorough inspection is need in order to determine the next step for this 1993 500E but in my opinion no W 124 036 should become a parts car unless it is an extreme case such as a major wreck. They are just too rare and a car that will never be duplicated due to its history and what made it great 20 years ago. I have had the pleasure of purchasing two of them back in 1993 brand new and still have a 1992 model. I regret having sold the one I did.

As a car enthusiast who restores cars as a hobby from the ground up, a bit of metal work, paint and part replacement should not be an issue to make this rare vehicle a parts car.

That is my opinion. I however agree that this is not for those with a weak heart!!!

I agree, Brutus. It should not turn into a parts car unless there is serious rot in structural areas. Fenders & trunk lid can be replaced, but the rear quarters would cost $$$$ to repair. The problem is that it would cost more to restore than it would be worth afterwards.

IMO, it would be an ideal daily driver / winter driver / track rat. I doubt it will sell at the current price though.

:hornets:

Having seen a similar evolution previously in the 300SEL 6.3 and 450SEL 6.9 markets, it is inevitable that the 500E market will follow suit.

What I mean by that is as time goes by, more and more 500E/E500 examples will (gradually) fall into a state of disrepair, including rust, accidents/botched repair, deferred maintenance buildup, major mechanical/drivetrain problems, and other maladies. This will cause them to descend into such a state that they essentially become un-fixable, or so prohibitively expensive to fix properly, that it is economically unfeasible to do so.

My observation with rusty MBs is that they are generally economically unfeasible to repair, unless rust is caught early and before it spreads beyond limited exterior areas on the vehicle. The amount of money required to rid a vehicle of rust grows exponentially once it spreads beyond areas like the wheel wells and fenders. Structural and/or broad external rust essentially bans a vehicle to the scrap heap, or to become a parts donor.

While the current number of 500E/E500 models that have permanently succumbed to accidents and environmental damage is still relatively low (I estimate it to be approximately 35% of all cars produced), the high worldwide number of these vehicles produced (10,479) has not yet made the situation a "save all cars at all costs" type of proposition. These cars are also not nearly as collectible as other MB models, such as Gullwings, W111/W112 cabriolets, 300SEL 6.3s, 190SLs and Pagodas, and very likely will NEVER bring the high prices that these cars bring.

The best historical analogy for 500E values would be the 300SEL 6.3, and perhaps in relative parallel with the 190E 2.3-16 models. The 6.3 languished with very low values until the late 2000s -- some 35 years after it ended production and 40+ years before today -- before values began appreciating in any substantive way.

The values for 450SEL 6.9 models, which are only 35 years out of production, have yet to increase significantly and may well never increase beyond a modest point.

Which brings us to the 500E models, which are mere youngsters....being not even 20 years out of production. We are talking AT LEAST another 15 years before any type of major price appreciation happens that is usual with collector cars. The cars will increase modestly in the near future, but not dramatically.

The bottom line for me, is that the worst cars TODAY, should donate their parts to keep other cars on the road, before they become too dilapidated to donate anything of value to other cars. It is just not worth dealing with rust when so many other good cars still exist for not much more money. Wtih 6, 7 and perhaps even 8,000 500E/E500s still on the road worldwide, there are MANY to choose from.

Contrast that with the 300SEL 6.3, of which only 6,526 models were produced (which is 62% of total 500E production). And the 6.3 shared far fewer components with the vanilla W109 than the 500E does with the vanilla W124.

Cheers,
Gerry

I like the steering wheel and clear corner lights, it gives an idea on attitude of this owner :duck:

Re: 1993 500e on Ebay - black

This is not the first time we see this car for sale on ebay , the pictures are not from this year trust me .
I wonder how it looks by now with all that shit all over it .

In general, I think that Gerry's analysis is correct. However, it still could be saved if the rust is limited to the fenders and the rear 1/4's. What parts are so rare that a rusted car should give up to a non rusted 500e? I kind of like the notion of keeping as many 500e's alive as possible. My 500e, with 254k miles and share of paint problems might be look at by some as a parts car, but it still has some fight left in it.

There are plenty of American made rust buckets, with high production numbers that are being brought back to life at a cost that the owner will probably not recover. . . . .For the love of the make and model.

I elect gsxr to make the trip down from Boise and bring a flatbed truck and all of his tools.

Good Hunting:stickpoke:
I would be AWFULLY tempted, if not for:

1) It's a ±12 hour drive from Spudland, each way
2) They're expecting a near-blizzard around Denver this weekend with 2-4 feet of snow (link)
3) With my luck, I would arrive just as the last useful parts were being hauled away by the early-arrival vultures, as @Ntrepid predicted above.

:brudda:

Good day,

It has been a long while for me on site. Hope everyone is staying safe in the bs Covid world...If I may, I would like to ask you experts your thoughts on this thread of what constitutes a repair vs becoming a parts car:

92 MY, Canadian car, 125K, needs front fenders, some minor mechanicals like struts/spheres, but the big one for me is a partially separated front spring perch. The surrounding structure is not soft as intact. Has anyone experienced this or tackled this job? Parts car for me would be absolute last resort as my 2 young boys flat out said they want dads car! thanks.

Zoran

I've been trying to get a set of Euros for my car for a long time without breaking the bank, and tried to jump on this opportunity. I had a friend of a friend head to the yard on Friday and explained how to remove the headlights/sent a video. He's a general handyman (not a mechanic) and couldn't get both out in the <1 hr he had before they closed. Denver then got dumped with snow, and he couldn't make it back until today. Regrettably, the car is pulled from the yard :(

If anyone knows what happened to the car and can help me out it'd mean a lot. It sucks to have gone thru all this trouble to come up empty handed.
