1994 E500 Mercedes-Benz “A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing” – Remarkably Good
“Minor interior cosmetic flaws. See detailed description below. The front seats are covered in high quality sheepskins. I learned while living in Europe that sheepskins keep you warm in winter and cool in summer. It is also true that the sheepskins are covering up what are really decent Recaro upholstery but the drivers’ left seat bolster has a 4” split in the leather. It cannot be repaired to my satisfaction. However, World Upholstery of California will make a pair of new front skin seats for this car for approximately $1250. Add another $500 for an upholster’ installation. Or, just drive this car, sheepskins are great.2) There is nick in the vinyl center console below the armrest. You can see it in one of the photos. It is a relatively easy replacement. Clean consoles can be found on eBay and elsewhere. Also, the accordion wood door on the storage unit below the arm rest is broken. That storage unit can also be easily replaced. 3)There is a slight sagging of the headliner.”
For sale due to age and health concerns, Der Wolf, my daily driver and pampered restoration project is now 99% finished. For those of you unfamiliar; the E500 (only 350 came to the USA) was the last of the 1991-94 Mercedes-Benz W124 Super Sports Sedans built in collaboration by Porsche to compete with the newly launched BMW M5. German car connoisseurs affectionately refer to the E500 and 500E series as A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing. Google this car and get all the details.
Porsche was given Carte Blanche with full access to the Mercedes Parts bin. For the fine details and exceptional performance characteristics of this now classic super sports sedan please Google 1991-94 Mercedes 500E or E500. 322 HP 5.0 Liter V8 does 0-60 mph in a tick over 5 seconds and tops out at 160 mph.
This is a drivers’ car It handles like a go-cart and satisfies anyone’s lust for speed. Porsche, in collaboration with Mercedes, lowered, widened, flared the fenders, installed Recaro seating and tuned the sedan to be unsurpassable on the Autobahn.
Consider buying this car as an investment. According to Hagerty Insurance Valuation Guide, which you can find online at hagerty.com this car has appreciated in value nearly 500% in the past five years.
· Their current valuations are:
· #1 Concours - $51,200
· #2 Excellent - $40,600
· #3 Good - $29,900
· #4 Fair - $18,900
I insure with Hagerty and they have given me a total loss guarantee of $28,000. If stolen or totaled I get a check for $28,000 .. period. … and that was before I painted the car.
Purchased well over 5 years ago with 104,000 miles Der Wolf needed most everything. And most everything she got. I have invoices for every expenditure. They total $28,840. This does not include tires or a $5500 paint job with new windshield; nor the Sony radio and other odds and ends.
I started with the mechanicals. The highlights are:
1) New brakes, rotors, bearings etc.
2) Hydraulic valve lifters .. replaced
3) New water pump, radiator, hoses, thermostat, etc. She runs cool in Miami heat
4) A/C overhaul - Get chilled in Miami heat in August .
5) Wiring harness … did you know there are 3? Changed all 3 with OEM wiring – nearly $5K
6) Starter motor … replaced
7) Front end … completely redone.
8) Struts .. replaced new front and back (hydraulic suspensions are expensive)
9) Drive shaft was trued and differential bearings replaced.
10) Rear window lifts motors replaced.
11) And lots more mechanical work all done by specialized Mercedes Benz shops, Motronix of Dania, Florida and JS Benz of Miami. All work documented and available to see and goes with the car.
12) Der Wolf was treated to a serious paint job in January of 2014 by Paterelli Restorations in Dania, FL. A month later she won 1st Prize for Vintage Sedans at Concours South Florida. See photo of trophy plaque (accompanies car). The paint has stayed near perfect for the past 2-1/2 years as I keep the car in an A/C indoor parking at my condo at 2627 S. Bayshore Drive in Coconut Grove, FL. Paint is original MB Graphite Gray Metallic.
13) The radio was changed 2014 and replaced with a top of the line Sony Radio/CD player and an installation for Sirius/XM, which I enjoy. You will have to call Sirius to turn it on.
I I mentioned that the restoration was 99% finished: Here is what is left to do if you want to turn Der Wolf into a serious show car. There is nothing else to do mechanically. It needs nothing and everything works. Below are the flaws I intended over time to correct.
1) The front seats are covered in high quality sheepskins. Or, just drive this car, sheepskins are great.
2) There is a nick in the vinyl center console below the armrest. You can see it in one of the photos. It is a relatively easy replacement. Clean consoles can be found on eBay and elsewhere. Also, the accordion wood door on the storage unit below the arm rest is broken. That storage unit can also be easily replaced.
3) There is a slight sagging of the headliner around the edges of the doors. Your friends will never notice but you will. An upholster can tighten it up. Not a serious problem.
4) There are 3 hairline cracks in the burled walnut console wood. These are not cracks in the wood but in the lacquer protecting the wood. Call it a patina of age. I would not change the wood panels but they are available new for under $500.
If you are in Florida come see the car. It’s sitting in the showroom of JS Benz in Miami at 4501 SW 74th Ave, Miami, FL 33155. Tel. (305) 269-8999. JS Benz is famous in South Florida as a Mercedes Benz only tuner. They boast one of the few Dynometers in the area and build special cars for special people. A visit to their shop and showroom is a treat.
Feel free to have the car inspected by your own mechanic or one at JS Benz.
Any questions about anything regarding this car please send me an email through eBay or give me a call at 954-261-7054.

Re: FS: 1994 E500 - Gray/Gray - 142kmi - ebay $25k (Miami, FL)

Be interested to hear what you guys "over the pond" think of this one, given the asking price?

Some of the seller's claims must be suspect - i.e. "only 350 imported to the States"!? And "an upholsterer could tighten-up the sagging roof lining". Yeh, right - if only!

And then there's that rip in the driver's seat!

He is high on price given the miles. Sagging headliner is a "normal" think and it would not draw me away if i was interested

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Pearl Black / Gray, 142kmi, $20k (Washington DC)

Just talked to the owner who is a dealer called Motorcars Washington in Sterling VA...said he checked the wrong box on the craigslist ad.

On the car...said it's had $28k in maintenance by previous owner and is going to send me copies of receipts and also carfax.

Said they got the car in and did a full detail on it and had the wheels sent out for refurb. Also the car had a total repaint. I didn't catch when that was done.

said there is a small tear in driver side bolster and also the center wood console has some wood spider cracks. has an aftermarket stereo and looks stock underneath except has an aftermarket muffler...but cats still there.

He is going to email the maintenance receipts/carfax and more pictures of the car...engine bay, underneath.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Pearl Black / Gray, 142kmi, $20k (Washington DC)

Motorcars Washington (link) is the next town over from me. They are a tiny independent (i.e. <10 cars) but are focused on the high end -- they had a 4-owner 2008 CLK63 Black Series about 4 months ago. Happy to take a look at it if you are serious.

Thanks Robert! will let you know.

right now I'm waiting on the additional pics and work receipts and carfax before I move further.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Pearl Black / Gray, 142kmi, $20k (Washington DC)

Wrong box my foot. They charge you $5 if you check the dealer box so he selected "owner" because that's free.

I didn't know that you got charged for dealer ads on CL....interesting data point though.....will see how this progresses.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Pearl Black / Gray, 142kmi, $20k (Washington DC)

... And $5 everytime you renew. Hence the multiple dealer listings that routinely show up on the private party site.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Pearl Black / Gray, 142kmi, $20k (Washington DC)

I can do a drive by with Ntrepid as well if needed.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Pearl Black / Gray, 142kmi, $20k (Washington DC)

It's a little odd that they don't even have it on their websites inventory. Are the bumpers supposed to be a gloss or matte clear coat? Front bumper looks to be gloss, rear matte.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Pearl Black / Gray, 142kmi, $20k (Washington DC)

The bumpers and lower mouldings have been re-painted body color (original is Alto Gray two-tone). I can't tell from the photos if the front & rear are different.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Pearl Black / Gray, 142kmi, $20k (Washington DC)

I saw that black series it was a consignment car and it had bad paintwork. I heard about this car in Nov last year as a friend pulled the dents on it and told me about it if I was interested. Seems they still have not put it on their inventory list which is interesting. Tread carefully

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Pearl Black / Gray, 142kmi, $20k (Washington DC)

That is strange they've had it 2+ weeks and still don't have it listed on their website inventory.

Price is down to $18,700 now, btw.

:scratchchin:

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Pearl Black / Gray, 142kmi, $20k (Washington DC)

I spoke with them today and one of the employees mentioned that it had alot of service records and is turnkey. Whole car was repainted I asked if it had overspray etc, he said im sure you could find some imperfections but the paint is very glossy. As you can tell im on a hunt here haha. The price has some wiggle room as I can imagine only a couple of grand tops. I used to sell cars and that would be our max but then again the owner can change his mind once the car has been sitting for too long.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Pearl Black / Gray, 142kmi, $20k (Washington DC)

Drove by the dealer on way to an appointment. Car was no where to be found there was a Ferrari, Bentley, Range Rover, and a sweet 911 parked out front. Couldnt see in the shop in the back but wasnt on sales floor either. I have 2 pics my friend sent me from October of the car (see below).

I have a carfax left if you can grab VIN and they havent provided it to you yet.

How many different colors are on that car?!?! And what's going on with that front passenger corner?!?! Nothing fits. The lines are all over the place.

maw

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Pearl Black / Gray, 142kmi, $20k (Washington DC)

Pulled the carfax hope they have records to back up claim of all that work. The carfax is pretty silent and says very little about the car it has had 4 owners the first 3 were out west the last was FL. Funny it only took them from October to put on their website

EHJ - this is same place that ran craigslist ad it has not changed other than a price increase. I drove by there last Friday walked in no one there on sales floor no one in shop looked in both places no sign of this car anywhere. Even drove around back.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Pearl Black/Gray, 142kmi, $25k (Miami, FL)

Yeah it's back alright...some used car stealer bought it for $19k from private owner and now wants to flip it for a $5K markup. In case anyone hasn't noticed these used dealers are like scavengers searching the net and burying these cars to flip they are driving these prices up and waiting to bleed dry some idiot. Too bad that this is happening.

Merged duplicate threads on same car - this caused some mixing of post orders, which is unavoidable due to how the forum software works. Also updated thread title with new price / location.

Just saying that these cars are getting targeted that's all. I drive one that I could have bought guy wanted 20k but wasnt interested because don't want a 93 year model...next thing you know a flipper bought it and put it on ebay for 30k... hasnt sold for months.

If you are picky about model year (and/or colors combo)... and price too... it's gonna be a tough search.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Pearl Black/Gray, 142kmi, $24k (Sterling, VA)

Yes it has been tough finding a clean one with no issues with a reasonable fair price. The thing is that some colors don't really look that good on these cars and others make them stand out.
Also the 92 has the throttle enrichment at WOT and solid block. 93 does not but 94 has the face lift. So for me it comes down to either a 92 or 94.

WOT module is $100 bucks and 1 min swap so that will make you not take right 93 model?

Clean and no issues at any price is pretty much unheard off. Seen low mileage example with more problems then high mileage ones.

Well you make an excellent point however I still prefer the closed deck versus an open deck.

Blocks were closed deck all the way through 1993 USA model year and went about 1/3 to 1/2 way through 1994 USA production.

The only real advantage to closed-deck blocks is the ability to bore them out to 100mm for a 6L conversion. The open-deck M119 blocks were used in the R129, W140, and W210 through 1999 and there were not any issues with reliability or longevity due to the open-deck design. Sure, I like closed-deck as well, it lets me fantasize about 6L conversions... but I wouldn't consider it a deal-breaker by any means.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Pearl Black/Gray, 142kmi, $24k (Sterling, VA)

Whatever happened to this car does anyone
In case anyone didn't know this car was involved in a major car accident which don't ask me why isn't showing on carfax but bad enough that the frame was bent. The original owner was having a hard time getting the alignment done right. So he ended up dishing out a couple of grand and someone apparently straightened it out just enough to pass alignment.

For sale by new owner. AutoCheck report attached below photos.

It's a Blue Ridge car! Jono, is that a Wavetrac installed? Also, are the new leathers from GAT or GAHH? Odd the leather installers didn't smooth out the wrinkles.

Agree on the wrinkles. While my seat "guts" were not replaced, new thicker batting was used along with steam to loosen the new skins by the installer of my c126.

$24K-->$33K in a year and a half? 50% in less than 2 years is a good rate of return for any investment. Good flipper!

We need Ace's commentary !!
