I have owned this car over 18 years. I am a small collector and past officer in local M.B. chapter. This is a very good preserved car. I have serviced this car to death and spent over $37,000 doing so. I have all service records since purchased on 1/18/1999. Car has 5 liter DOHC engine and was jointly developed and produced with Porsche doing design, modifications, and assembly for M.B. Driving this car is addictive like a drug. Exclusivity factor is off the charts. Looking for a good home. $25,000 firm.

Longtime lurker here. What do you guys think of this car? I've been in the market for one for a while.
Based only on the information provided... it doesn't look bad. If the seller has records of all the work done, AND the car has no rust (not driven in northeast winters), it could be a really nice car. At least worth a PPI. Great color combo too.

:apl:

Nice cars at a reasonable price go pretty fast. This appears to be in that catagory. Owner states that he is a small collector I would think that translates to 'Enthusiest Owned' in my book and well worth looking at.

I qualify this with; it's lived in the 'Rustbelt' 18 years and definitely needs a PPI. The other issue might be that it's sat around in a garage or warehouse and not driven much which may wake up a lot of stuff that falls into Gerry's $5K rule.

I'm surprised that no one from the board has looked at this car.

car had rust (driver's door the hole was thru the metal) and the clear coat was peeling, needed bodywork, rust repair and full respray, same owner last 18 years
Ouch. Where is the rust on the door? Size of the hole?

:runexe:

Yikes. $25k with a bullet hole? I'd be curious to see what the undercarriage looks like.

^^^ yup. If it's visible externally in the paint, there's always more that is less visible.

It may still be a nice car overall, but rust repair will need to be factored into the price. 18-year ownership and $37k in maintenance (!) is still pretty enticing.

:wormhole:

I knew somebody would know this car. Rustbelt cars really need a good PPI.
Now the truth comes out. No closeup pics.

Carreraboy says it's been repaired but I for one would really like to see everything if I were buying it.

BTW, Owner has been on the 500eboard for 6 years. I'm sure with that much exposure to us nuts he has probably done a pretty good job of maintaining it.

OH - maybe I misunderstood. It's all fixed now? Carreraboy? Does it have the full respray and repairs already done?

Terry, can you say who the owner is? The OP is not the owner (says 'no affiliation').

No repairs have been done, car needs petty much full respray, clearcoat is peeling, owner was asking $15k for it last time we spoke, IMHO it needs at least $10k (paint, mechanics, interior) to look awesome again

paint and rust repair is gonna eat up that 10K Right quick!

Don't often see 124's rusting like that if there hasn't been prior damage..which does make Me worry about the underside/winters per Dave earlier.

A detailed list of work that has been completed would go a long way towards making her enticing to a future care taker..

gsxr,

My mistake, I didn't read the first post completely.

And I guess I misunderstood carreraboy to.

Gotta quit reading this stuff at 4:00 AM in the morning.

The Mercedes Benz W124 500E is endowed with a 5.0 litre V8 32 valve engine producing 326 bhp, usually found in the R129 SL500 of that era A vehicle developed and produced jointly between Mercedes Benz & Porsche to conquer BMW's hand-built E34 M5, the build quality of the 500E was the pinnacle of Mercedes Benz craftmanship. Whilst other models of the W124 were built in 3 days, the E500 took 18 days each to build, with the shell being built & painted first, then taken to Porsche for fitting of mechanicals, in fact they were assembled on the Porsche 959 supercar production line in Zuffenhausen then shipped back to Mercedes and then back to Porsche throughout the build. Each was car was assembled by hand, so although visually the 500E resembles it's slightly lesser siblings, it has many, many differences making this vehicle really rather special indeed! Matin,

It’s 4:00 AM again and I’m reading this post about this same car. Hopefully I get it straight this time.

Interesting that it showed up in the UK. Can you actually read that VIN #? OR did I miss it some where else in the add?
I can’t read it on my I-Phone. That flash from the camera blotted out the important part of the number perfectly.

Can’t tell much from the Seller’s description or by his pics. None of the stuff that carreraboy posted of the rust and seat bolster damage can be seen.

A serious bidder sure needs to take a closer look.

Thanks for posting Matin.

What's the exchange rate on the pound and dollar right now?

The exchange rate is ever changing, however small or large, just google exchange rate, many free websites give you the current value

at 7:50 am Fri 8/17/18 the exc rate is 1£ = 1.27 dollars

Ha-ha - yes the image of the VIN looks messed up because of the glare.

I traced the start of the VIN to this website: https://online.handh.co.uk/m/lot-details/index/catalog/84/lot/40264/

From there I found the actual VIN - looks like it's gone unsold on a few auction sites in the UK.

Somewhat happy to find this thread. I remember seeing the autotrader long before I purchased my 420 and became active here.

I remember watching the price drop and drop, before finally disappearing. After joining in here and watching the prices rise and rise, I was kicking myself for not doing further investigation when it was available. Not so much anymore. :)
