Is the transmission actually different, or is it just the vacuum pressure modulator (which I have on my car)? I think the internals are the same, and the pressure modulator has a 140 part number.

The modulator is definitely different, and there appear to be differences in the valve body as well since the VB has an HWA- part number. However I don't know what exactly is different in the VB. I think the rest of the trans internals (clutch packs, bands, etc) are identical - at least based on EPC data and factory docs.

:detective:

In addition the final drive ratio on some E60's is different - back when you could order basically anything from AMG in early 90's you could get different final drive ratio

I'm fairly certain this was only possible if a car was modified by AMG post-delivery. I've never found any confirmation that any 036 left the factory with anything except 2.82 gears. One magazine article claimed Swiss-delivery cars had 2.65 but I've never seen factory documentation to support that.

Isn‘t msq‘s E60 a swiss delivery? Maybe he can confirm

Both of these things you point out are true

1. normally 2.82
2. but Swiss delivery ones are 2.65 (pre delivery - and I am not sure if this applies only to some or all)

I can say this for a fact.

p.s. it's kind of crazy that you would know the Swiss delivery ones were delivered new like this...it took me 4 years of homework and searching to figure that one out

p.p.s some of the Swiss ones (maybe all? I do not know) they did both 2.65 and removed speed limiter so top speed is great

Can one order that different VB, and is it first gear start? I bet I know who knows the difference, and if that VB is obtainable, I’ll probably place a call to see (and obtain). But I agree, the internals don’t need any additional beefing. I beat that horse to near death when I put in my rebuilt transmission.

Thanks for chiming in msq. How do you like your car? Are you enjoying it as much as you thought you would? Would be cool to hear/see more about your car, since it‘s such a rare and well kept E60....

It's almost certainly NLA, and if not, might cost a fortune. I don't believe it is FGS. Part # is: HWA-129-270-01-15

Long story TimL...I have put almost no miles on it (probably <300 miles)....when it showed up at my place from Jonathan at Blue Ridge (where I originally had it delivered) it literally looked like a new car, I was surprised - very few things in life exceed your expectation, he and his team did - they were great!
I was due to update my owners thread which I have neglected, something more important going on for quite a while.
Net - its an incredible car and I feel lucky to have it but I have not gotten the use of the E60 or other fun things that I had hoped.

Shame that you didn‘t get enough time with it, but great to hear that it exceeds your expectations- much better than getting a lot of time with a car that you don‘t enjoy as much as you thought you would 🙂

The E60 AMG final drive is the same 2.82 ratio found in the E500E, mine has the Brabus 70% lock up differential with the stock ratio.

90km/h -> ~2000RPM

Good discussion. Still, are the major and minor differences value of 117k€? In my mind not, but markets (buyer & seller) is always right.

I think not, not for 117k€ more...but somebody will buy it for that money!
I got my 500E from him many years ago, and normally his business is like that: Thats the Price, take or leave it! Ok Ok, that little Part I will change for you.. (but he good excellent cars!)

Good discussion. Still, are the major and minor differences value of 117k€? In my mind not, but markets (buyer & seller) is always right.

Have a look at the 1990s Porsche market in Germany:

993 Turbo: starts ~120k Euro (production ~5937 units)
993 Turbo with WLS / turbo S retrofit starts ~200k Euro
993 Turbo S (factory) starts ~480k Euro (production ~345 units)
993 GT2 starts 890k Euro (production ~194 units)

The market price difference between the turbo and turbo S start price is 4 times! while technically its an ECU tune and K24 turbos?
No engine displacement change nor internal components, no special factory arrangement.

Porsche AG shows a lot of respect for its previous generations and their owners; the market is reflecting this. Unlike M-B that cuts spare parts production and forces owners to buy new cars : |

P.S There are alot less factory E60s than there are GT2!

wonder if it was a Japanese car originally based on the muffler/tailpipes? A bit surprised it does not have AMG logo speedometer, but it is a 300km speedometer.

No, original German Car..

No, original German Car..

Original German car meaning it was first delivered in Europe and always stayed there, or started out life in Europe and went to Japan and ended up back in Europe? Reason I ask is I am not used to seeing that muffler/tailpipe on any German E60's that spent their life in Europe, unless maybe someone ordered that muffler (which was common on Japanese E60's) and installed it in Europe.

He told me, and is writing that this car was originally sold in 1995 to Leipzig/Germany, stayed there till 2010 with
126tkm and one owner. Then sold over German Car to somebody else, stayed there in a car collection with little use and decided now to sell it again.

This E60 AMG Limited was member @Dortmunder's car: Owner - Dortmunder | Owners and Their Cars

He bought the car from the Norwegian member @Mosselmann, the car was discussed in this thread: Mercedes E60 AMG LIMITED | Cars for Sale - 500E / E500 ONLY

It was advertised here in Norway and later sold to Dortmunder: Mercedes-Benz E-Klasse

Mosselmann really wanted me to acquire the car so he gave me the 1.st priority on the highest bid, but I had no chance to dig up the funds. I recall I did the final refusal on phone with Mosselmann when I visitted @Jelmer outside Amsterdam, it was in his car on the way to the airport. To be honest I'm not sure I regret so deeply today because I am not a collector guy, and I realized already at that time that this car should not be driven as much as I would have done with it. (...and I did in fact have the supercharged 6.0 AMG in the garage already...)

$100k USD seems like a lot for a 500E with 6L conversion and facelift... and nearly 300,000km's.

You could build the same car with half the odo reading for less.

Wonder if there is AMG paperwork to back up the conversion.

My car is almost identical with E60. Both have got the same extras on production line where they were at the same time. Also odometer figures are almost the same. Biggest differences are metallic paint vs. solid black, original seats vs reinstalled, retro installed webasto and the magic AMG engine, causing value difference about 30k€ vs 90k€. Well, market is always right and I’m jealous. 😕
