Gerry's Photo Contest Picture Submission

I just looked at Gerry's picture submission from last night. That's a photo I haven't seen before, and for a person like myself with a Wheel Fetish, it has really caught my attention.

Almost every time I see a picture of a group of cars, very little attention is made to showing the wheels of more than 1 or 2 cars in a lineup. With this photo, someone went out of their way to get perfect spacing and angles, you get a perfect view of every wheel in the lineup, love it.

The way these 500's are parked and spaced makes for a perfect symmetrical look at the Wheel styles that were in voque 12 years ago.

From top to bottom -
SL55 18" 5 spoke (R230, AMG "Styling 3")
SL55 18" 22 spoke (R230, AMG "Styling 5")
E500E 16" 8 hole
Evo II 17"
Thin 17" 5 spoke - unknown type
E55 (and R129) 18" Monoblock (5 hole, AMG "Styling 2")
E55 (and R129) 18" Monoblock (5 hole, AMG "Styling 2")
R129 18" 5 spoke (AMG "Styling 1")

It's a small sample size with just 8 cars, but you do notice the possible styling trends in the Northwest 12 years ago;
  • 18" wheels 5/8
  • 17" wheels 2/8
  • 16" wheels 1/8
  • R129 option wheels 4/8, (if Evo II -5/8?)
  • E500E wheels 2/8
  • Non MB/AMG brand 1/8
  • E55 Monoblock wheel seen twice
The surprise is the wheels that are missing
  • 17" OZ 3 piece Aero I
  • 18" 2 piece SL600 BBS 5 spoke
  • 17" Aero I Mono Blocks
I know the wheels listed as missing are much more rare and harder to source, but perhaps a larger sample size would pick them up.

It would be interesting to get a similar photo from the east coast, and other areas where E500E's are located to see the wheel choice trends.

Anyway, thanks for posting that picture Gerry regardless of the contest, love the wheels comparison view.

FYI - my car is the third from bottom -- DB199 with the sunroof open. AMG Mono IIs, which is what I am running on the car now. Not long after this photo was taken I had gone over to my Rial 800s (18" 8-hole style). Some time after I moved to Texas in late 2008, I sold the Rials to @Jelmer.

The 18” AMG III 2-piece are another wheel I didn’t think about for this car. I’ve thought of the 19” version of that wheel for my S55. Nice, clean looking wheel IMO.
