Does this need anything special to mount in place of the front license plate ?
Yes, there is a mounting rail bracket (part #124-885-09-21) that’s secured with a few screws, and the plate delete also screws into the bumper at the bottom.

If the car already has a license plate bracket/panel installed, that mounting rail is already there.

We can gauge interest in reproducing those brackets and see if there’s enough demand to justify it.

This is intriguing, thanks @RPM Retro!

I don't recall my existing strips and existing black license plate fillter for my MOPF1 w124 being textured at all. They are smooth black.

I *do* have, in my possession, a used from-the-pick-n-pull textured license plate filler for a w124 though.

Gang / @gsxr - is it possible that some MOPF0 w124s use textured black strips, and then some MOPF1 w124s used smooth black strips, and then MOPF2 w124s use black strips that are then painted? 🤔

I never dug into this and would be good to know.

That’s a good point. The texture can smoothen out over time it seems. It won’t be perfectly smooth but definitely not as textured as new. Take a look at the attached photo which shows the original texture on the inner part of the center recess vs the face of the impact strip that’s more smooth. 93 300CE MOPF1.

You’ll also find that preface-lift impact strips are a different blend of material compared to facelift. Same goes for the plate delete trims. The black textured trims and impact strips are softer and more pliable, while the MOPF2 painted versions are a harder and more rigid material, and dark grey in its raw finish.

We used brand new original Mercedes parts in both finishes to try and best replicate the overall finish and material, including using the same blend of raw materials to get the closest match of mechanical properties for each variant.

We have access to 2 400E vehicles, as well as a couple of NOS original MB black impact strips. Can try to snap some pics of those for extra references. As far as EPC goes, front impact strip part number looks to be the same for MOPF0 and MOPF1.

I didn't expect that difference in the "interior" v exterior of the strip.

Now I'm glad I hadn't paid that much attention before.

:)

maw

EDIT ... here is my Jan'92 car, where I had found a NOS grey smooth OEM one on eBay and had it painted to "match"... My car wears a Euro plate up front, so I'm content to let time and Aerospace 303 do their thing on this spare part and the impact strip, which I can always have painted if it bothers me. This was August 2025.

And here's a picture of the car as purchased, with the original filler plate (which I sold long ago) and non-.036 headlights (just to save you some cognitive dissonance). This was 2009 sometime. Hopefully this sheds some light on the differences so members can make a decision.

Hmmmm. My 1993 MOPF1 car has smooth black strips - never any texture, and I don’t think texture just magically smooths itself out over time. If texture smooths itself out over time then the 30+ year old textured filler strip I have in my parts hoard from the junkyard should be furiously smoothing itself out….. but it is still as textured as ever and uniformly textured at that.

When I purchased a new black filler strip from MB in 2018, it was smooth and black, not textured.

I think you are categorizing the world into

1) textured black au naturale
2) smooth grey to be painted

But perhaps you may be missing

3) smooth black au naturale

See this pic of my 1993 MOPF1 car --- smooth au naturale strips from 1993, and smooth naturale MB license plate filler strip that I purchased in 2018.

I've owned two or three of the "late" inserts (painted per facelift bumper color) and they have always been very smooth in interior and exterior to the touch.

That said, if someone wants to smoothen out an insert with a slight texture, I'm sure that it would be easy enough to do with some 1200 or higher sandpaper and a sander, with not too much work.

IMHO, it's nice that these insert plates are even being made available again, and thanks to RPM-R for making them so.

I figured out the filler panel texture thing. I had to go look at a bunch of cars to tell what is going on.

All MOPF0 are textured, and Black color (depends on fading)
All MOPF1 are textured... EXCEPT 036, which is smooth. These are also Black color.
All MOPF2 are smooth (and, painted bumper color). These were sold by MB in primer finish, ready for paint.

The part numbers in the EPC are different for the 036, for the impact strip, AND filler panels. There is a subtle difference in the 036 front impact strip in shape and finish. I believe the only difference for the 036-specific filler panels is the finish, not the size/shape.

In the part number format 124-885-XX-23, insert the numbers below in place of "XX".

Black textured license plate holder = #08 (Not for 500E) <-- Still available new from Mercedes, $75 MSRP
Black textured blank filler = #09 (Not for 500E) <-- Available from RPM Retro
Black smooth license plate holder = #19 (500E only)
Black smooth blank filler = #20 (500E only)
Primer smooth license plate holder = #27
Primer smooth blank filler = #28 <-- Available from RPM Retro (ready for paint)

EPC / @gsxr for the win when it comes to solving the riddle of the texture!!! 🧠🧐

1767810077782.png

And just an observation ---- thinking about all these permutations of filler strips / licenseplate holders / 500E MOPF1 specific parts ---- that crazy SKU proliferation is peak late 1980s/early 1990s Mercedes-Benz.

@gsxr Thank you for clarifying!

We were able to do a side by side comparison with 2 MOPF1 400E's this morning to show that the texture is an exact match. Photos attached. (Yes, both cars are red 🚗)

We can do a test sand with a high grit sand paper on one of the samples to see if it smoothens out while maintaining the black finish, as suggested by @gerryvz. If some of you want to see what that will look like just reply and we'll give it a shot.

Dave, thanks for going through the research and sharing your findings!

This issue had me scratching my head for some time, as I couldn't just figure out what I had been perceiving differently when looking at photos of 'pedestrian' W124s and those from 036s.

Now that I've gone into these brochures again (after reading your very informative and right post about black stripes without texture for the 500E) I realised why my eye always had been wanting to see a 'shinier' look on the 036 compared to the rest of MOPF-1 cars.

I'll share (if not already known by other members here) the links to the information I mentioned above.

Alberto

@Teddy_West added you for 3 smooth, they come in black plastic already but due to the nature of that specific material and molding process it may not be a perfect finish which is why we recommend painting to match the impact strip for a perfect appearance.

@papayars4 added!

Thank you!

I'd like to see a sample done as described by @gerryvz . Doable?

All E500E inserts should be smooth. The only difference is color.

Early (pre-facelift) 124's (except 500E) had textured impact strips / filler panels.

See post #11 for details.

Assuming you want one for a 500E, it should be the smooth type, painted to color-match your existing inserts (or, have the entire impact strip repainted so the filler will be identical).

:jono:

After performing multiple sanding tests, we determined that neither wet nor dry sanding is a viable solution for smoothing the textured panel. The process dulls the surface and causes the black plastic to lose its deep, uniform finish, resulting in a gray, washed-out appearance.

For the best overall result, we recommend using a smooth panel and painting to match as needed.

With Tomer's order, I think that puts the total up to 12? So, we still need 4 more to get the price down to $140/ea, correct?

I'm on the fence with maybe ordering 2 textured panels. Anyone else out there on the fence as well?

:seesaw:
