Yesterday I changed my spark plug wires. I followed the instructions on this web site which made it easy After I completed the work It would not start. It will turn over but will not start.

I waited till this morning to check my routing of wires. They were done correctly.

The connections are fully seated on the distributor caps and coils. After having a cocktail I thought maybe I did not push the connectors completely down on the spark plugs. I did push them hard. How far do they go down ? Any other ideas ?

Thanks for your help.

There should be a solid "click" that you can feel when the boot snaps onto the spark plug.

Did you touch ANYTHING else besides the spark plug wires? Also, was the car running normally before you replaced the wires?

:shocking:

Good questions. It ran fine except it would hesitate when I hit the gas and it did not idle as smooth as it used to. Not every time just from time to time. It has new motor mounts.

I disconnected the sensor behind the driver side headlight. I did that so I could remove the panel that would allow better access to the coils

I disconnected a vacuum hose that runs from the top of the engine on the driver side. It is a hard hose that runs to the center of the engine and connects to other vacuum lines This allowed me to run the wires easier

There was one more electric plug on the center of of the engine, which allowed me to run the wires. I don’t have better explanation of this connector. I can send you a picture of this tomorrow

I disconnected two vacuum lines on the top of the motor.

All of these have been reconnected

I believe the attached photo is your car. You can see the hard hose of the right side of the engine, the two vacuum hoses in the center of the engine and the electric connection that attaches to the right side of the engine. I hope this helps

On the left side of the motor by the fire wall I removed two bolts that allowed me to lift the wires. This made it easier to remove the cover that goes over the spark plugs. That is it.
Thanks again

Hmmm. None of the items you disconnected should prevent the engine from starting. I assume it cranks over but will not fire. About the only (common) things that would prevent it starting would be either a blown fuse, or the crank sensor (CKP) connector not fully seated into the EZL.

If you have a can of starting fluid, you could spray a bit down the MAF (1 second burst is plenty) and see if the engine tries to fire. If so, the issue is fuel supply. If it still doesn't fire with starting fluid, that confirms you aren't getting ignition.

:klink:

I guess the crank sensor is the electric wire I disconnected ? I will check the fuses. Where would fuses be located ?

Does your car still have the original wiring harness? Take a look at the parts tag where the harness enters into the bulkhead area on the passenger side. The manufacturer should be Delphi if it’s the updated harness. If you can’t find the tag just look at on of the fuel injector plugs. Specifically the wires going to the plug looking for crumbling insulation. You might have shorted the harness when moving things if it’s still original. My 92 034 still had the original harness with no issues which quite frankly surprised me.

Another question i thought of last night. Are you sure you didn’t accidentally switch the coil wires? You would still get some popping and backfires but the engine wouldn’t start. Also when the ignition switch is turned to the run position are you hearing and noise from the ETA?

EVERYTHING on an automobile is generally viewed from the driver's seat so the LEFT distributor would be on the driver's side. Please state again which distributor went to which COIL (right or left as seen from the driver's seat) for the benefit of those helping you. It doesn't appear you made a mistake with these however the clarity will help.
