Huf Spare Key

The older Mercedes-Benz models use these Huf keys, they seem to be hard to find and a bit overpriced when available. Has anyone found a good replacement for these that isn't crap? My car never came with a spare so I'm starting to bug.

Have you contacted your local dealer for pricing on a replacement, VIN-cut master key?

If your ignition lock tumbler has never been replaced, I recommend buying a new tumbler, which will include a new master key.

BTW - what chassis is this for?

:apl:

MB has the ability to and does cut new keys at its Dallas TX parts depot, for the "youngtimer" cars like the 124 and 126. You just have to provide any local MB dealer with your VIN number and show any MB dealer your registration or title as proof of ownership. Hopefully your lock hasn't been changed.

Generally keys are very cheap -- in the past they have been in the neighborhood of $20 per. That may be a higher price now.

The keys that MB makes are the original HUF branded ones. DO NOT EVER use any aftermarket keys. ONLY use HUF keys from MB.

As the @gsxr said, you can also just purchase a new tumbler for your door or ignition (if still available) -- that new tumbler will include a fresh, brand new key. Or you can buy the key separate.

Nope, I was wondering if I could just get a blank key and get it cut. I've read that the verification stuff with MB can a while.

It is for a 124, it is in my bio. I also wouldn't be opposed to getting a new FOB for my 202 but I heard those are really pricey.

I'm assuming they want the actual physical title. Problem is, my titles are stored in Montana under an LLC, so it might be a PITA.

They won't sell you a blank key, I don't believe. You have to buy it cut for your VIN.

If you give them your registration (which should be carried in the vehicle anyway), that is just as good in their eyes (combined with a driver's license) as a title.

Shouldn't be a problem getting a key for the 124 chassis. Usually only takes a few days. VIN-coded tumbler is p/n 126-460-02-04 and includes a new master key. $120 list, ~$90 discount.

The dealers won't sell blank steel keys, as Gerry said. You can get aftermarket brass keys but that's a last resort.

VIN-coded master key is p/n 126-760-10-06, $37 MSRP, ouch.

No need for the title (think of all the people who finance their cars and the bank holds the title). Dealer just wants to copy your registration and driver's license.
