WANTED I NEED A REAR VIEW MIRROR

I think I posted wrong so here it is again.

Does anybody have a rear view mirror for a 93 500E in BLACK.

While backing my car out of the garage yesterday. I discovered the dreaded mirror explosion! Well mine was kind of DUD in the explosion category. Lets just say it broke.

Anyway, I now need a new one or somebody's used one.

OR a part number.

Hi Terry, it is the season of goodwill so I can provide you with a perfect good used w124 rear view mirror free of charge.

If you dont mind a couple weeks wait for it to arrive and paying for international shipping (maybe 25 bucks ish not sure) pm me

Bummer, but now's your chance to upgrade it to an auto-dimmer with homelink, maybe 2phast has some remaining stock? I have his installed on mine and very pleased with it. Would fool all but eagle-eyed enthusiasts into thinking its OEM.

My belated XMass gift arrived from Northern Ireland on Saturday. JC220 stepped up to the plate and delivered. I have what looks like a brand new rear view mirror.

My hats off to JC220 for sending it.

Thanks Joe

Terry protect that investment by spraying some Aerospace 303 on a rag and wiping it down 2-3 times over the day liberally. And ever time you change your oil, nourish it again. Spray the rag not the unit as you don't want any lubricants to get on the ball. (obviously you wont be spraying the unit whilst installed - if so wear eye protection LMAO)

Glad it arrived on one piece Terry! :mbstar:

I have about 8 of these mirrors in my hoard so this one was a gift to a member in need. It is also a primo Irish climate mirror so should not self destruct as readily as the crispy baked ones over there :whistling2:

I offer a Lifetime warranty on it - as long as you don't take it out of the box :rugby:

@TerryA, how did this happen? This is exactly what happened to mine. I discovered it after picking my car up from a transmission rebuild, so I assumed, somehow, someone at the shop bumped their head into it or something like that. I plucked a perfect used mirror from a junkyard car for about $10. It seems this mirror "explosion" is a know thing?

It seems to be a phenomonon that is native to areas with hot climates, and cars that are left out in the sun for a long period of time.

Gerry, thanks! Is dashboard cracking also an out of the blue event, or does it develop in a gradual, progressive manner?

The life of some of the interior plastic seems to be about 25 to 28 years. My car is just hibernating in the garage not touched by anyone. BAM it was just broken. Other parts like tha A, B & C pillars are subject to breaking when removed. I have noticed that my trunk stops need replacing. The little plastic gizmo in the throttle linkage should be replaced or you might be parked on the side of the road.

Age is not kind to anything or anyone

Joe,

It looks good enough to outlast me!

Thanks Again

And all this time I was thinking some "deer" working at the shop was responsible. Lol. Your picture of the damaged mirror looks 100% identical to how mine looked. Like literally. Amazing

Sorry to be repetitive, but it's it know how dashboards develop cracks on our cars? It's it similar to a mirror, where it happens out of nowhere?

I have never seen anyone in 10 years here post of dashboard cracks on a 124. Is yours cracked? If so, I would say it's an anomaly.
I understand it's more of an issue with 201s.

I use windshield screens to protect my dash board when I park out in the sun. Their cheap insurance. Under $20.00. I'm with Drew. I've never seen a cracked dash in a 124.

The W201 cars definitely had an issue with cracking up to about 1988 when they must have changed the formulation of vinyl....I have not seen cracks in the later year cars.

As for the W124 cars, I have not seen any dash cracks, however, I did look at a 1995 W124 wagon in Palm Springs years ago with 35k miles. This car had sit out in the sun to the point where the dashboard was visibly deformed due to extreme heat as if it melted. The rest of the car looked well beyond 35k. It was a 90 minute drive to come see the car and it took less than 90 seconds to leave without even giving the seller an offer.

I use one [windshield screen] religiously!
Me too, year-round. Keeps UV rays out of the interior even in cool weather. I use Covercraft UVS100 folding shades, this is what MBUSA had sold as an official dealer accessory back in the day (NLA form MB, still available from Covercraft). And I have window tint on most of my cars as well, same reason... even if you don't want dark tint, you can get almost-clear tint that keeps UV rays (and heat) out.

Very good to know. I thought this was a relatively regular occurrence with 80's/early 90s MBs. Very glad I thought wrong!
I think the W123 may have had cracking issues (can't remember). And I swear, the W210 came from the factory pre-cracked. But the 124, thankfully, almost never has the dash crack.

:relieved:

Yes, W123, W116 and W126 cars very definitely had dash-cracking issues (though my C126 dash has never cracked).
