Instrument cluster light guides melting

Okay, I replaced the same gears in my 1995 last night (click here for thread) and this time I used Gleitpaste on the gears. I'll let you know if I hear any difference. So far, I can't even hear the gears on the car without the Gleitpaste.

I did notice something interesting on both cars -- a bulb (I'm not sure if it's for the tach or the right turn signal) melted the plastic around the socket in the instrument cluster. It must be a design thing because it was in the exact same place on both cars. I just broke away some of the excess melted plastic and put it back together. The bulb itself was fine.

Re: HOW-TO: Replacing Odometer Gears

I'll have to check the light bulbs; But since both cars had the same melting, I would think the odds of two different owners changing to a higher wattage bulb are pretty low.

Roma_500E: This is what the ebay seller stated:

"This odometer repair kit is for all Mercedes W126 from 1978-1991 280SEL,300SE/SEL, 350SD/SDL, 380SEC/SEL,420SEL,500SEL/SEC,560SEC/SEL, Mercedes W124 400E,E420,500E and E500s from 1988-1995 and all Mercedes W107 380SL/SLC and 500SLs from 1981-1985 and all Mercedes 500SL and 560SLs from 1986-1989, tooth count is 12T, 16/48T and 18/48T gears."
