Hi everyone,

Doing some paint correction on new to me E420 and getting quite a bit of black paint on the pads. Fair amount of oxidation and scratches when I started. I'm assuming that Mercedes used a single stage black paint back in 1994 and that's why I'm seeing this paint on the pads? Otherwise, maybe non-orignal paintwork was performed?

Any insight is appreciated.

Thanks,
Eric

040 Black was single-stage, non-metallic... although I'm not 100% certain there was no clearcoat. If there's no clearcoat, then yes you'll get black on the buffer pads.

I can confirm no clear coat on my 94 040 built 11-93 with all original paint on the metal surfaces.

The paint is pretty thick and good for paint correction. I saw quite a bit of black on pads when cutting. What’s underneath is quite stunning when done.

Thanks, Kegmankipp. Question, did you use claybar before cutting/polishing?
Always use a claybar before paint correction.

You want to do it in the following order:

-water rinse(warm if possible)
-iron remover(not sure if this will remove old wax and polishes but you want all that stripped from the car
-wash and rinse again
-clay bar using soapy water
-measure paint if you have the tools

Always start with least aggressive method using the least aggressive compounds and pads.
You might be able to get the paint to look good just by using a light polishing compound and pad.

Why remove extra clear coat/paint off the car if you dont have to.
