M119 spark plug question

I just uncovered my MBNA Maintenance Manual, Starting Model Year 1994, in my garage tonight while cleaning things out.

In the section about changing the spark plugs, it appears in the instructions to use two different spark plug parts:

"Only install recommended spark plugs"

Engine 119 with flat seat, Cylinders 1-3 and 5-7: 120 589 02 09 00
Engine 119 with flat seat, Cylinders 4 and 8: 119 589 02 09 00

Why would MBNA have spec'd two different plugs - one for six of the cylinders and another for two cylinders?

Same thing was spec'd for the M120 - except the 119 plug number above was ONLY spec'd for cylinder #6.

The M104 was spec'd for the 119 plug number for all six cylinders.

What gives with this? :scratchchin:

Cheers,
Gerry

Those are the numbers of the flexible socket tools. Note the "589" in the second group of three digits in the part number. Anytime you see that, note that the part number refers to some kind of tool.

I noticed the extra two numbers on the part numbers listed and thought it odd (I did know that they often denote tools or fluids/sealants/lubricants). So I thought it weird about why a clark plug would have the extra numbers given the clark plug numbers that Vader recently posted. I misread the table to spec plug numbers for each engine, rather than the tool number.

Thank you for the clarification. Makes sense now, as the tools are listed and illustrated on the next page of the Maintenance Manual.

Mercedes has started adding 2 numbers on the end of the oil filters, and now plugs.

Don't know why.

Tools and chemicals have always has the extra 2 numbers

The extra 2-digit suffix generally indicates a temporary change in supplier, or something along those lines. Generally tends to be related to consumables (O-rings, filters, hoses, etc).
