MB Debuts New G-Wagen at NA Int'l Auto Show

Attached is the English Language press release and photos involved with this week's launch of the newly redesigned G-wagen. The interior has received the most comprehensive redesign in quite some time.

I'll let you guys post your own opinions, but I prefer the interior of my own 1995 G for its simplicity, austerity, and quality of materials.

Thanks for showing Gerry. I know nothing about 'G's and I know that I will never own one.

My only comment on the interior is that the first few pics of the dashboard to me anyway the center A/C outlets look like ''''EYELASHES''' looking at you.
It kinda looks like WALL-E in the movie looking at you.

I like the new interior. From what I have seen on the spy pictures, the car looks mostly the same as the old one, altough the front end looks a slight angeled to the sides. It has also a wider track which makes it look more planted to the ground, but I think, does not have the original appearance of the G-Wagen.

I hope the keep the W463 Professional-models as they did whit the 461 when the 463 came out. On the current G's, I like the Professionals most as they represent best the original purpose of the car. I am really looking forward to see how the story of G continues, although I am a bit afraid if the make the new model too "soft" to attract wider audience. I think the essence of the G is that it has always been a engineered and expensive "tool", which has made it a somekind of a niche car, and thus so special (and wanted).

Oh no, from Pictures of it at Winter tests in the North of Sweden it is clearly much wider but essentially the
same design, trademark if you will, said to house newer modern suspension, see the old one and the
Land Rover defender, quite narrow chassis, good in the Woods but...

We have to wait for the Defender successor, we will soon see the G with the new il4 straight 6, 3liter petrol/diesel
also a new 4liter Twin turbo, offcourse, V8...

The new G has a about 10cm wide cabin to accommodate wider seats and center console. The G was till date the narrowest body in the actual production line. A A class 176 is wider!
The new cabin will be made out off aluminum for weight reduction. The front axle will be changed in favor of a independent front suspension for more onroad driving quality (however the development department says its even better in off-road conditions than the old one - if this is marketing talk or true to the bone - idk). The car will still have a (modified) ladder frame. It will get the current m176 4L biturbo V8 paired with the 9 speed transmission.

Some new materials and photos pertaining to the "new" G-wagen introduction. These are from the past few days, courtesy of Mercedes-Benz.

They used a guest appearance by Arnold Schwarzenegger to introduce the new G-wagen. He's a longtime G-wagen and Unimog owner, and he was born just a stone's throw from the G-wagen factory in Graz, Austria.

AND, in what's got to be one of the biggest publicity gimmicks I've ever seen MB do, they cast an original 1979 G-wagen into a block of amber-colored resin.

A good accessory for Jono's shop customer waiting room, I think .....

I really appreciate the earlier model W463s for their straightforward nature and purposeful design.
However, lately, I feel in the last 12 years or so, the Gelandewagen is all over the place now. It seems every Baller or Baller wannabe or wealthy mother is driving around in one of these. I see so many of these late-model up-luxed and blinged-out Gelandewagens driving around that it turns me off.

I find the W464 seems to continue pursuing that target market - it must be very lucrative.

BTW — I feel the same way about AMG everything these days as well. Subjectively speaking it feels like half the MBs I see crawling around everywhere are AMG variants ... and these models are more and more ostentatious these days.

This must be what getting older feels like. ;-)

Yep, definitely a large & lucrative market for the blinged up statusmobile G-wagens.

G-wagen aficionados tend to like the early to mid-463s best -- simple, less blingy, and more true to purpose, yet still with some luxury (leather seats, burl walnut, etc.). I truly enjoy my G -- it's got the same materials and build-era quality as the E500E, with the bonus of having an M104 engine -- one that I have some good experience with and plenty of spare parts for. I only wish I could either have a manual transmission, or an AMG M104 engine.

With an off-road vehicle like a G, you don't NEED 500HP and 1,000 lb-ft of torque. In fact, that's overkill. There are plenty of 250GDs and 280GEs out there with far less HP and torque than my G320 that do plenty fine out in the wild.

I do have to give kudos to MB for keeping at least the look of the G (W464) more or less the same as its predecessors. I only hope that it is not like a Hummer H2 -- a Hummer looking outside on a GM truck chassis. I have a sneaking suspicion that the W464 is some sort of a G-wagen exterior mounted on a GL chassis, but I could be wrong about that.

In any case, I think this continues the departure of the G away from its original roots. Very much like Range Rover did some years back. I do not believe that many RRs are actually used for any sort of off-road use these days.

BTW there are some really great CIS-E powered G's out there, such as the 500GE and 300GE ....

A good friend of mine had a G320. This model had the M112 motor in it and was a solid vehicle. I too like the leather and walnut burl interior. It makes the G wagon luxurious and comfortable. I don't really care for all the polished aluminum and carbon fiber MB is putting on its cars. Likewise the AMGs with black bird's eye maple. The early G wagons had cloth seats which were hung on metal frames. Those were the real G wagons. You could take those everywhere. Unlike the new ones which only see the boulevards and night clubs.

My Neighbor got her new w464 - 5Days ago... what can in say: it is NOT my car! First time I saw it live, and all impressions for what a G stands is gone..

Way to much “Bling Bling” inside, outside style to “soft”.. yes looks like a G, but no.. nothing for me!! But that feeling, it got with all new MB Models in this Days

Last weekend I saw an G63 AMG being driven by a young Asian woman. It looked brand new but I don’t know much about them so maybe not. Anyway, this woman appeared afraid to step on the gas. She didn’t get it above 25 mph. I was behind her and in front for miles and she just held everybody up on a major thoroughfare with a speed limit of 45 mph.

I’m thinking she stepped on the gas hard once and it scared the hell out of her.
I would classify her with the girl trucker that smashed up makaman’s grill. She shouldn’t be driving such a powerful of a machine.

Just my opinion.
