Mercedes 500E and BMW M5

@duuder,
Captruff has a Hemmings magazine article written about his 500E comparing it to an M5. This was many years ago. It may be posted here somewhere. It was a great comparison.

Edit: I found the article.

The link above doesn’t work instead use search magnifying glass and type in “German Bullets” Bring it up and go to Glen’s post #10 and bring up the article Glen highlights.

READ IT it’s a Great Article.

Well done no fanfare video. The M5 was and still is one of my favorite cars and this video educated me on some of the cool differences present on the 3.8 models. Love the throwing star wheels although I'd prefer the last year 6 speed with M parallel wheels.

His 500E looks to be in great shape for the milage. Stock USA headlight doors look pristine. It also appears the car may have the original windshield. All in all, a very informational video by a knowledgeable owner. Thanks for posting.

One of you West coasters should help him out with creating the driving video and bring him onto the forum if he isn't already.

Hey that's me! Thanks for the kind words, i know this is a tough crowd. I did recently get a camera mount, and will do some driving videos. Big rain storm here in northern california this weekend, so maybe after thanksgiving.

And good eye, that was an OE Mercedes windshield my friend, the prior owner, bought a few years back. He also bought the new headlamp trims new.. (he was a NOS parts horder for sure)

Often these are repetitive and long to arrive at any points. Filled with opinions. Nothing wrong with opinions, unless you are a captive audience.

Anyway...

Very nice M5! Many years ago (Auto Trader days) I passed on a meticulous 3.8 here in Georgia. All I knew about the 3.8 was it was bigger than the 3.6! I believe the ask was around $38K, about $10,000 more than I could muster for any car. I've thought about it numerous times thru the years.

I'm looking forward to your driving video and trying to make one myself some time.

Nice cars but both very different. I’ve owned both and mine was 1991 M5 with 231k miles. The 500E is far superior in all aspects but the M5 came with manual and seemed more fun on that regard. The build quality is far superior on 500E and when driven at high speeds on highway the 500E feels lighter and way more powerful. They both are great cars but the 500E is more special, classy and ahead of that generation M5 and more closer to e39 M5 which I also owned( 3 of them). I also owned two ‘92 325i manual, BMW M3 2006 and one BMW 1M. Out of all BMWs I’ve owned the e34 M5 is the one I missed the least and e39 M5 is the one I miss the most. Still, 500E design, quality, fun factor is superior but that’s just my opinion. All great cars though and build at a time where the driving experience was prioritized.

Thanks for the info - nice to hear from someone who has actually owned both and spent seat time in them!

:alky:

it's interesting because my feeling owning both is a bit opposite. M5 feels lighter (and it is, this one just over 3700 lbs with a full tank), faster, more nimble. As i said in the video, the 500e does have nicer interior build quality, but you'd never know you're in something different over another 124 from what you see and touch. I've owned multiple m5's (3.6, 3.8 and a couple of e39s) and this is my second 500e. There's a significant difference between the 3.6 and 3.8, which probably sways me a bit, given both of my m5's (sedan and touring) are 3.8. I've tracked my M5's over the past 20 years. I'd love to get a little more sound out of the 500e.
i agree with you on the e39, that is one i miss. My e60 M5 is currently on cars and bids, and i think i'm going to start looking for another clean stock e39 M5 in an interesting color.

I testdrove several E34 M5. Both 3.6 and 3.8. One 3.8 was tuned by Carly Motors in Leiden, Netherlands.
And was 'said to have' 380 PS.
Anyway, late 1995 i managed to get it to 282 km/h [175mph] on the speedometer. And 277 [172mph] on the boardcomputer.

At that time the fastest i had ever driven. It's almost 30 years ago, but i still cherish these memories. 🥰

and E60 M5 you say... how would you compare that to a 500E, i like the E60 M5 but i REALLY like my Mercedes

my father had an E60, i had to show him the M button for full power mode. i almost got to drive it, he did have to let it go b/c of the financial crisis

Happy to see you looking to buy another e39 M5, couldn’t agree more. I know one day I’ll own another one. Even my 1M was awesome but e39 M5 is super special. Owning E500E and e39 M5 would be the ultimate garage 😃
