w124 500E beats E34 M5 3.8 quarter mile

Just saw a video of 500E trouncing the E34 M5 3.8L 6 speed manual in a quarter mile race.

The 722.3 isnt so slow after all if it can beat up on a 6 speed BMW manual transmission.

On paper, the BMW should win this race.
 
Magazine tests when these cars were new showed the 500E to be either equal, or quicker + faster vs the M5. Without seeing the video, 3 main points come to mind:

1) Are both cars making full power at 30 years old? There's a lot of 500E's out there not running properly. Could be the BMW in the video was down a few ponies.​
2) What was the skill level of the M5 driver? It's not easy to click off seamless upshifts with a manual transmission. AND, if the driver was being nice to the car and performing hard-on-the-powertrain no-lift upshifts, that also would cost a couple of tenths in the quarter.​
3) How much difference is "trouncing"? 2 tenths of a second is over 1 full car length at ~100mph. From the magazine tests, when new the 500E may have been over 2 car lengths ahead. Maybe more.​


Finally - on paper, I'd expect the 500E to tie or win. The 500E is only 100 lbs heavier and is only rated 10hp more, but has nearly 100 lb-ft more torque. The M5 has lower gearing but can't quite make up for the added area under the torque curve of the M119.

If you're not an experienced race car driver, the chances are that you'll be quicker in an automatic vs a similar manual gearbox car, + torque wins races. The 500E peaked @ around 350ft/lbs torque @ around 4000rpm. The M5 peaked @ around 270ft/lbs torque @ around 5000RPM.

I suspect that where the M5 is ahead, is in fun per sq/in of seat cushion.

@dionphaneuf’s 500E blew those two cars away. No amount of on paper comparisons can make up for 7.5 lengths ahead. :jono:

true. 1/4 mile speed isnt everything. e34 m5 is incredibly fun to drive. and fast enough
 
The 722.6 swap should be doable... I would love to attempt this someday. Even with 2.82 gears it would really drop freeway cruise RPM.

now that prices are at a reality. when its time to do a full 722.3 rebuild, mind as well spend a little extra and go full 722.6. @gsxr

Exactly. But you need to source a 722.6 from an M119, rebuild that, get an aftermarket ECU that performs nearly as well as stock... and THEN figure out how to bolt it up. If the driveshaft length needs to be changed that will be a real headache.
